That’s reasonable. I certainly didn’t mean to imply that the US ended apartheid – that was ended by the South Africans themselves. I was just pointing out that the sanctions on Cuba and SA were not comparable for multiple reasons, chiefly that the sanctions against SA were only in place for a short time before their “goals” were achieved.
That would only be relevant if we were sanctioning Cuba over their treatment of gays and blacks, instead of for nationalizing our business interests.
In any event, gays and blacks are treated poorly by almost every Latin American government, so it would be a poor comparison even if it were relevant.
Which brings me to another stupid liberal statement: the President and First Lady discussing the racism they’ve endured, which involved being mistaken for employees. If racism is nontrivial in this country, they did nothing to make that case in that interview.
Didn’t you hear? We elected a black president. Racism is only a problem because stupid liberal keep bringing it up.
Your bar for stupidity is pretty low, to the point of tedium.
You’ll have to provide a link, but the quote I saw from the First Lady contained no mention of “racism” as a cause or something to blame for her being mistaken for an employee, and when she mentioned it on a talk show she did so as a funny story, not as a story about racism.
They talked about being treated like servants, not “employees.” It’s not like someone was shopping in Nordstrom and asked a United States Senator if the Uggs come in a different size. They specifically talked about being at a black tie dinner party and someone asked Obama to bring coffee.
Jesus, adaher, you’re a walking, talking fuckup who won’t shut up. There is literally nothing that you can’t get wrong.
Yeah, it’s just a BIT worse than that in Cuba.
Note also that the Obamas could cite nothing that actually held them back in life or did them actual harm. Racism is truly over if that’s the best they could do.
I suspect they’re a bit too polite to cite the millions of idiots who’ve been demanding to see Barack’s birth certificate for six years because he’s brown.
Because having a foreign father and spending most of his developing years outside the country wouldn’t create any suspicion whatsoever that he might not have been born here. Didn’t help that he cited himself as Kenyan on his college application(shades of Liz Warren?)
The Hawaii short form, plus the small detail that his mother was an American citizen should have put the controversy to rest right from the start. But the furor on the right over Obama’s birth certificate wasn’t based on racism, it was based on lame evidence. It was more akin to the “controversy” over John Kerry’s purple hearts than anything else.
If racism is a serious problem, then it should have been easy for Obama to claim threats of violence, intimidation, from the police if no one else, or employment or housing discrimination. He couldn’t, and that’s telling. At the very least, it makes what eschereal said a stupid liberal statement. Comparing our record on race to Castro’s is absurd. The Cuban regime’s practice is close to apartheid and is directed by the Cuban government.
Cite that Obama cited himself as “Kenyan” on his college application? Sounds like another conspiracy theory.
“Didn’t” isn’t the same as “couldn’t”.
Comparing our record on race to Cuba’s is reasonable, even though we’re doing much better now… in the past, and even the relatively recent past, we weren’t.
Which just marks the Castro regime as a relic from the past that should be allowed to die, not something celebrated by the likes of Michael Moore and Oliver Stone.
Right, assuming blacks are the servile class has NO deeper ramifications. Crossing the street or clutching a purse in an elevator also has NO deeper ramifications for blacks, it’s just shallow stuff, don’t worry about it.
Donald Trump [del]made this one up[/del] is waiting to release the mound of evidence he’s gathered about this one.
I looked it up, and I got fooled by the Birthers:
Problem is, you’re getting into stuff that will never change, ever, ever, ever, so at some point it has to be gotten over. When the worst thing a black man has to worry about is being psychologically wounded by a little white lady( who of course has NO reason to ever be fearful given her privileged life where she never has to worry about being a victim of violence based on her sex…)
Now you’re getting into TWO oppressed sectors of society, which will make a PC person’s head spin if they think about it too hard. Just blame both their situations on white men, makes it much easier.
Never ever ever ever change? I’ll mark this one up as another mighty adaher prediction.
Who is celebrating it? Moore wasn’t in that tweet, and you’ll have to provide a cite for Stone. As far as I can see, some of us are celebrating the end of a stupid policy, and celebrating a brighter future for the Cuban people, but I haven’t seen any celebration of Castro.
I’m a Jew. In 3000 years we’ve beaten discrimination and intimidation for the most part(at least in the US), but the day that we don’t hear stereotypical comments is not likely to come before the Sun turns into a red giant. They haven’t changed in centuries. At least the using gentile blood to make matzoh is over with, so who knows?
Adaher: Is there any reason at all to believe that Obama’s statements (his or hers) were in response to a question such as “can you tell us the most serious times that you have ever been affected by racism in your life”? And that they had incentive to answer fully and honestly, with no reason not to do so? Because if not, you’re just talking irrelevant nonsense.
