The government can be very effective when it’s adequately funded. During the 50’s and early 60’s, the top marginal tax rate was over 90%, and the economy and middle class enjoyed record gains, while the government built the interstate highway system and created a space program that went from zero to a man on the moon in ten years.
Under the ridiculous tax cuts of Bush, and the draconian budget cuts of Republican congresses, and even their childish antics of delaying the approval of important department heads for months or years, it’s no surprise that effectiveness has gone downhill, along with the middle class getting screwed.
