Stupid liberal idea of the day

Yeah, suggesting that the police aren’t beating people enough to stop them from killing each other doesn’t exactly sound like a liberal idea to me. But perhaps my liberal bias is blinding me.

Somewhere in between, really.

So more like this one?

A day after shooting, House Democrats erupt in protest

Fucking assholes. Honor the victims and put aside your politics for a minute.

Then think about what you want. You’re calling for a gun control bill 24 hours after the shooting?

That’s all we need, a gun control bill written in the heat of the moment, no thinking, no knowledge of guns, no logic and all emotion. Great recipe for a law that might work.
Or more likely a law that will be an unworkable, fucked up mess.

Word. Yeah, it’s an emotional moment, but one these things happens and it’s like everyone’s brains turn to orange marmalade.

It’s never the right time, especially right after a shooting. Let’s just wait, like, a month since the last one, right? Then we’ll take actual action, or talk about it, or something. In the meantime, ‘thoughts and prayers for the dead and injured’ is action enough, am I right?

The important thing is not to politicize this. That would be wrong.

Remember this?

Right. Because Trump has done such a good job of not politicizing it.

Actually, they’re calling for a gun control bill that was written in 2007 and was supported by GWB. It makes it harder for suspected terrorists to buy guns. People who feel that they were unfairly or mistakenly put on the terrorist watch list can appeal.

What exactly is your problem with that?

If a person can be put on a watch list for merely suspicion of wrong doing, the bill would deprive individuals of their gun rights without due process.

The way I see it, the Republicans drained out all the brake fluid and now they are shedding tears for the people who perished in the crash. That is very pathetic and deserves to be lit upon the altar of their shame.

More like, they have pretty much insisted that no car be manufactured with brakes for the last 30 years etc etc…

Why, compared with hundreds of innocents being slaughtered, that would be too awful!

Because we shouldn’t give up fundamental liberties for safety. Especially when we’re talking about giving up liberties as a result of terrorism. That’s kind of the point of terrorism.

The tree of gun manufacturer’s profits must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of innocents.

Gun ownership is a right. If you can deny it for being merely accused of a crime, then you can be denied any right based on mere accusations.

What you can use to take away guns, we can use to take away the vote.

You may not have noticed, but these days mass shootings are virtually a daily occurrence. It will always be less than a week since the last mass shooting (here’s another one from this weekend). If we need to wait until there aren’t anymore shootings, we’ll never do anything. And we never do.

As for “politicizing” the shootings, I note that when the shooter is a Muslim the Republicans politicize the bejeezus out of it within seconds of it hitting the news.

So…fuck “waiting”, say I. If “politicizing” it means something substantive finally gets done, politicize away.

What in the proposed bill would have stopped any mass shooting? I agree that some gun control can help at the margins, but that’s about it. The rhetoric I’m seeing from some liberals are things like, “It’s time to say ‘no more’”. Okay, then propose a bill that gets us to a big reduction in mass shootings. The bills you’ve actually proposed don’t do that. At best they’ll save a life here and there because some shooter had to take a few seconds to reload because his magazine was smaller.

THat’s what bugs me about this whole thing, is that they talk like it’s a moral crusade, but in action it’s all politics. If it’s truly a moral imperative, propose that big gun confiscation bill and run on it. If it’s a moral imperative, risk losing everything to fight for it. No? Okay, then it’s not a moral imperative, it’s just another policy issue where you’d like to see some incremental improvement with a goal towards incrementally doing a little more 10-20 years from now.
