Serious question: Have you clicked on the YouTubes that show young black girls being thrown to the ground headfirst for minor crimes like riding their bike or talking back? Did you see the YouTube of a black man being shot by a cop for reaching into his car after the cop asked him to present his car registration?
Where do you get your detailed knowledge of the problems blacks in the U.S. face? From watching old TV serials?
700 in the park isn’t right either. greater Yellowstone ecosystem, sure. But not in the park itself.
The estimated Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem grizzly bear population increased from 136 in 1975 to between 674 and 839 in 2014, and the bears have gradually expanded their occupied habitat by more than 50%. As monitored by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, the criteria used to determine whether the population within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has recovered include estimated population size, distribution of females with cubs, and mortality rates. An estimated 150 grizzly bears occupy ranges that lie partly or entirely within Yellowstone. The number of females producing cubs in the park has remained relatively stable since 1996, suggesting that the park may be at or near ecological carrying capacity for grizzly bears.
Who said JT is a “bad person?” He said something contextually awkward, insensitive, and tone-deaf. He got criticized. He chose to apologize/explain himself. Not a complicated story.
(Is this how bottom-shelf SLIOTD has become? Sad.)
In the context of “stupid insensitive things celebrities have said on Twitter”, this doesn’t even rank in the top 1000. Not that he should have said it, but it’s pretty weak sauce in the grand scheme of things.
What confounds me is celebrities still insist on Tweeting at all. They need the account, marketing their brand is important, so fine give it to their publicist or anyone else who can be trusted to not get drunk then fired up and post something stupid on their phone.
I have a hard time believing stupid Tweets makes sense even in the realm of ‘even bad press is press’ where producing and releasing ‘private’ sex tapes is still a viable career move.
I’d note that he started to get shit because he said the speech was inspiring. Then he got into further shit by talking about how we’re all the same, which until about ten minutes ago was standard feel good pablum. Now it’s insensitive and tone deaf. It truly is hard to keep up. If a guy as immersed in black culture as Justin Timberlake doesn’t know what to say, how do the rest of us have any chance?
The relationship between black and white America has progressed. It’s officially a marriage now. Our only role at this point is to say, “You’re right, I’m wrong, I’m sorry.”
This one is definitely a stupid liberal idea: FEC Democrats wanted to take regulatory action against Fox News for changing their debate rules to allow more candidates to have exposure.
And all three Democrats backed him. Does the law even matter anymore, or is it just about punishing your enemies?
I guess you could have posted it in the SRIOTD thread, and made it about the 'un-named Republican" who brought the complaint in the first place…decisions, decisions…
Bitching isn’t a stupid ideological idea, everyone does it. And given that this would have been like the 18th most popular GOP candidate, it’s probably some guy like Vermin Supreme or something. All 17 candidates who were paper qualified or had notoriety in some other way were on that stage. For all the Democrats to want to impose penalties on a news company for a quite reasonable decision is an attack on the 1st amendment. Been a lot of that coming from Democrats lately on many fronts.
GMO is a technology. I can be used with good or bad intent and have beneficial or harmful results.
For example, a hypothetical Ag company could make a GMO crop that was highly resistant to a very toxic pesticide. There would be pressure to use their product because even if you didn’t use the pesticide, it would likely negatively impact your own crop. And of course there’s no risk in a company having a practical monopoly on the core food supply.
It was Mark Everson, and based on fundraising numbers, he actually had more backing than some of the “undercard” candidates, such as Jim Gilmore, who did get invited to the debate. The actual case was based on the last minute reasoning regarding debate participant selection, which was deemed less than objective by this particular Republican candidate.
Part of the argument against Fox was:
Our regulations have consistently required that staging organizations “use pre-established” and “objective criteria to avoid the real or apparent potential for a quid pro quo, and to ensure the integrity and fairness of the [debate] process.” This is a simple, bright-line rule.
So, while one could certainly argue either way, it’s not nearly the cut and dried stupid idea that you make it out to be.
