Certainly a bad business decision, especially in trying to be so public about it. If it were a more reputable company that had good reviews and customer loyalty, rather than terrible reviews as well as some legal issues, they may be able to get away with it.
That said, I don’t think that they are actually breaking any laws. Political affiliation is not a protected class at the fed level, and a brief skim of NH’s laws, I didn’t see that it was there either.
Definitely something to consider if you are in “liberal utopia”, if you want to make a statement, but their decision probably put the final nail in their business, which really should have been under a while back anyway.
I’d say it’s a poor attempt at getting publicity, than a sincere position.
Something tells me this was a hail-mary gamble for some free media exposure. I am sure that this store will closing soon.
It’s a stupid liberal idea but it’s based on a stupid conservative raison d’être. If conservatives were actually consistent, they would respect this business owner’s decision on what to do on his property and let the free market sort out whether he gets to stay in business or not.
As I recall, New Hampshire was being targeted by the glibertarians as the place to move to en masse in order to gain a political majority, take the place over and prove the undeniable merit of their ideals (though, Wyoming would make more sense, since it is three-quarters of the way there already).
I would think the exact opposite. If the store was making good business then such a move could potentially turn off customers who might otherwise come to your store. But it your business is failing, then doing this in a very public way might be the hail Mary that keeps you alive another month. A large number (the majority) of customers might be turned off by this, but they weren’t visiting your store anyway. On the other hand there may be some angry liberals who after reading about you on the interwebs decide to patronize your establishment out of a sense of solidarity. Worst case scenario you go out of buisiness next month as expected.

It’s possible he’s cribbing from the conservative wing nut playbook – you’re headed for bankruptcy, you make some controversial political statement, you go out of business, and then you blame liberals. The politics are flipped in this case, but the insanity is the same.
And New Hampshire is certainly not a liberal utopia.
