It was very insensitive, yes, due to the timing. The broader (accurate) point is that atrocities abroad will cause unpredictable blowback, often against innocent civilians, and we should do everything we can to reduce those atrocities for multiple reasons including the pragmatic and “selfish” reason to protect our own communities.
This accurate point should not have been brought up in the immediate aftermath of this shooting. There are better times for those kinds of discussion.

But let me make sure I understand you. Are you saying that no domestic US antisemitism (antisemitic words and statements as well as actions like this attack) has any connection at all to Israeli atrocities in Gaza and the WB? If you’re not saying that, then I can’t figure out what we’re disagreeing on. Because that’s all I’m saying (and what AES was saying) - Israeli atrocities, and US complicity, increases the danger to Jews (and really all Americans) worldwide, including in the US.
We should oppose it because it’s wrong, but also to protect American communities.

Imagine an American Israeli was in the states after October 7th, had family killed, and went and blew up a mosque in a Detroit suburb.
That would have been a hate crime. Islamophobia. Full stop. Not hurt people hurt people. Connecting that hate crime to October 7th, connecting Israel being safe from attacks to keeping American Muslims safe would be … not something I could agree with you on. That would be stupid.
And yes I see much of the actions by Israel after October 7th as being of that sort. So no need to hijack to that. Enough other threads there.
Hate crimes are hate crimes. Attacking Asians after Covid was not hurt people hurt people and not the reason to deal with Covid. Were they connected? Sure. And anyone who responded to it with “hurt people … “ should have been reacted to how?
