A “private entity” is not a place. Public accommodations are “private entities”, not places.
You have to be specific and absolutely accurate if you don’t want to be called out for getting things wrong. It only takes a little bit of effort – why don’t you seem willing to expend it? All it takes is to read the cite, say to yourself “okay, public accommodations aren’t specifically places but rather the entities that own these places of business, so I should rephrase my argument”. Please try that.
I don’t believe you. You’re so bad with facts and interpretation that I don’t believe any assertions you make without specific cites that use the exact and specific language you are asserting.
This doesn’t meet that criteria. “Public Accommodations” are private entities. Further, many and possibly even most florists, bakers, and wedding planners have “retail stores”, which are specifically cited in your link. They can’t turn away interracial couples, by law, because they’re interracial, and they shouldn’t be able to turn away gay couples because they’re gay.
Many years ago, I made an oath. An oath to powerful forces. To break it could cost me everything I hold dear. I can’t speak of the specifics of the oath, but you can be confident that I made it, and be confident that I must obey it.
I’m sorry.
EDIT: Also, pointing out adaher’s incredibly lazy posting is kind of a hobby of mine.
Give him s break, it is clear that he has problems paying attention. He was Ninja’d twice already as that bit of the Arizona Republican dumber critter was posted yesterday in this thread.
They exist. There are also religions that ban people from engaging with divorced persons. Mormonism and the Jehovah’s Witnesses practice shunning of apostates. These laws would permit that to spill over into commerce.
Bigotry is not always illegal. There are many bad things in this world that we do not deign to put people in jail for. Am I to assume that if I don’t support fining or putting people in jail or taking away their livelihood, that I endorse and defend their behavior?
There’s also just the tiny problem of the 1st amendment. I realize that this law has become enemy#1 to liberals everywhere in recent years, but until you can get about 80% of the population to decide that we really don’t need freedom of speech, freedom of religion, or freedom of association, you’re just going to have to live with it. So no, you won’t be putting preachers in jail who call being gay a sin like the other “civilized” countries are doing.
No one was saying we were going to infringe on others’ religious beliefs before gay marriage was legal anywhere. As a matter of fact, advocates were assuring us that NO ONE would be affected and if you didn’t like gay marriage, don’t get gay married.
So pardon me if I don’t trust liberal assurances. Anyone who ever parroted that talking point on this board a few years ago should be called out, and believe me, I’ll be looking through the archives. Conservatives warned for years that this would happen and they were called scaremongers. Your side, broadly speaking, lied.
No one’s religious beliefs are infringed upon – at least no more than the CR Act already infringed on any supposed religious beliefs. All we are suggesting is that gay couples should be treated the same as interracial couples. Wedding planners can still do Christian weddings, if that’s what they want. They just have to offer their services to all couples, including gay couples.
If you have a cite that florists, bakers, and wedding planners are exempt from the CR Act, present it. You haven’t done so yet.
No, although polygamy will probably legal(and I have no problem with that). There was a lot of scaremongering from the right on the subject, but some of it is probably accurate, given what’s going on elsewhere. Multiple marriage is legal in the Netherlands, for example:
But the bigger problem religious people warned about is that it would indeed result in trampling on their religious freedom. And they were right. Because that’s what was going on in Canada and the UK and it’s what’s going to happen here just as soon as liberals get their way. Part of getting their way is to declare things like the RFRA “extreme”, mainly by basically lying about it.
