I think Alan Keyes (remember him, he was Ben Carson a few election cycles ago) made the same kind of argument when he was carpet-bagged in to run against Obama for the Senate seat. He said that Obama didn’t have the authentic African American experience because he wasn’t descended from slaves.
The argument is stupid, but the facts are there. (Whether they’re relevant or not is another question). Obama isn’t descended from slaves --he doesn’t have family members who went through 100 years of Jim Crow. He was raised by white people. So our first African American president is different from most AA’s. So what.
It matters little how you feel. What matters is how people see you. If somebody is willing to deny you of opportunity because of your race, they will care little how long ago your ancestors arrived from Africa.
When people see him, what do they see?
Obama is not descended from slaves, but his children are.
This. Racism is applied based on perception rather than any factual distinctions. An upper-class man from Senegal is going to be treated the same way in America by those who have no idea of his status as the gang member on the corner in South Philly.
Nitpick: There is strong evidence (which I have previously cited at this board) that Stanley Ann Dunham is descended from the “first official slave” in the American colonies.
Ironically, Obama is also related to Jefferson Davis.
