Congressman Roger Marshall thinks that Jesus would be against health care for the poor.
I’m not in the habit of defending Republicans, but he didn’t say anything of the sort. He uses a saying from Jesus to denigrate and insult poor people, and imply that it’s pointless to try and help them, but says nothing like what you claimed.
The reporter goes on to partially refute Marshall’s claims:
Just for reference,
Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us.’ There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves. Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care. The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”
Well, that’s a rather selective reading of the Bible. He left off the last half of the verse:
“The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me.”
Unless he slightly misquoted the verse he wanted:
For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’
I could almost ignore “I’m not judging, but THESE people are doing it wrong, even if evidence suggests otherwise” alone, and the fact that obesity is rather similar across socioeconomic boundaries. It’s like starting with “With all due respect,” before being rude. Asshole.
EDIT: Partially ninja’d. That’s what I get for using my words.
If you do not like the facts at hand, your are free to produce facts that support your position that the FLOTUS does not support the POTUS’s long-held positions on health care and the environment, and that these are exceptions to her statement that she supports him “one-hundred percent.”
Good lord.
Standing “100 percent” in support of her husband doesn’t mean shit about specific policies. I have no idea what Melania Trump understands about public policy; if she’s at all like the man she 100% supports, then she understands jack shit. I expect that Melania’s interests and knowledge overlap with any given political philosophy only incidentally and marginally. I expect that like some past FLOTUS, she will be fairly apolitical in her pursuits.
If Mrs. Trump begins to stump for the elimination of the EPA, or repeal of PPACA or any of the myriad and various evils of her husband’s Administration, I’ll start giving a shit about her FLOTUS activities. Until then, twisting her vapid but bog-standard utterances into things they’re not like Rick has done is stupid and makes anyone who goes along with it look stupid as well. And treating her as a designated proxy for her husband’s sins is petty, mean, and denies her any agency of her own.
I was right here when this started! (It’s a defining moment for many Boomers, like “Where were you when JFK blew up the Challenger on 9/11?”)
And I remember thinking “This isn’t exactly a hard-hitting thread so far… doubt it’ll last.”
Just like I predicted they’d never be able to make a successful TV series based upon the movie MASH…
Apologies if this has been posted already, but Sean Hannity says that the Right was “always nice to the Obamas.”
Republican Jesus does. Doubt Biblical Jesuswould agree.
Having actually met Jesus years ago during a psychoerotic dream state, I can assure all gentle readers that Jesus doesn’t give a flying shit. He shutters when recalling his time here on earth and has absolutely no desire to return for any reason. He also requests that people stop invoking his name in prayer, slogans, pleas, etc. In short, leave the guy alone…
I heard that he used to louver when he was younger, too.
And he healed the blinds!
Lame!
Them too!
Halt!
Hammer time?
An Oklahoma state legislator is accused of requiring Muslim constituents to answer a loaded questionnaire with several anti-Mohammad questions before he will meet with them.
You couldn’t wait until it was confirmed?
Snopes link.
The picture is blurred, the questionnaire looks too generic, the logo at the top is not clear and Bennett’s name is hand written.
I don’t see any clear evidence it came from Bennett’s office.
Rick Kitchen gets a nickel every time he posts a link on the dope.
It’s the only fucking thing that would explain it.
Does this legislator have rolls of toilet paper in his office with the constitution printed on them? Because that would be a good gift to send him.
