Oklahoma is desperately short of money in the budget and has cut services and education for several years [school weeks shortened to 4 days, teachers without any type of raise for nearly a decade, school closures, deferred road/bridge maintenance to point of collapse, etc…].
But why raise the production tax, it’ll hurt the industry? The oil lobby got the tax cut from 7% to 2% a few years back (a few billion in profits). Sane politicians and oil men have advocated raising the tax back to the average rate for neighboring states. Texas has always had a stick-your-chest-out brand of conservatism but I remember a time not long ago when Lone Star politicians were still relatively sane. But I am beginning to think that Gov. Abbot has come down with rabies – he makes Rick Perry look like a damn statesman. I know some people hate Texas but it’s actually a cool state with good people and it’s sad to think that it is being hijacked by kooks and infected with the same virulent strain of conservatism that has destroyed Kansas and will destroy Oklahoma.
