Stupid Republican idea of the day

And the right says liberals are elitist?

Roger Stone threatens civil war if Trump is impeached.

Uh huh. I am pretty sick of all these “patriots” who threaten to start a civil war if they don’t get their way… ALL the time.

Thank you for hunting down that blog post, Kimstu. It was helpful.
I’ll agree with some of the historian’s points that people were rightly pissed at Lincoln for taking away their slaves/means of production. But most of he sources he quotes are people who actually did take up arms and revolt. There’s noting there that implies (to me, at least) that the modern left is ready to take up arms and revolt against The Orange Menace. The pre-civil war slave-holders were revolting for their livelihoods and lands…the modern left-elite-white-liberal is protesting to maintain their civil liberties and self-respect.

On preview, there certainly isn’t anybody in my liberal bubble who is screaming for armed conflict like the right-wing militia groups and the 3% whackos.

I don’t know anyone on the left that is looking for a fight either, but I know many who are starting to think that it is prudent to prepare for one.

Oh? :dubious: So, there are!

Yeah, right? For a gold digging asshole, she looks pretty good showering.

Unfortunately for Mister Munchkin, she insists on having all the lights off when they zork. Also, she wears black goggles just in case she might get a glimpse.

And no kissing.

I think we can take 'em.

Can’t help wondering if that was the “Bannon Plan” all along. Find someone with tremendous appeal to a “certain segment” of the population, (and if they’re anything, it’s certain) but who is manifestly unfit for the office. Let him be impeached and watch the fireworks.

Too crazy? Well, we are speculating regarding the motivations of crazy people, so don’t expect rationality.

Scott Baio retweeted a meme that suggests that Sandy Hook and Charlottesville are related conspiracies, and that Heather Heyer’s mother is really the “actress” who “portrayed” the mother of teacher Vicki Soto from Sandy Hook. He deleted it after a while.

Nicely done.

Bannon didn’t join the campaign until a year after Trump declared, so in addition to being a master manipulator, he’d have to be a Time Lord as well.

Sometimes I want to take these people by the collar and shake them. The people who think the government killed MLK and the Kennedys, that 9/11 and OKC were inside jobs, that the royals had Princess Di murdered, that Sandy Hook and Charlottesville were hoaxes. I want to shake them by the collar and ask them, has there ever been a public tragedy in modern history that was exactly what it appeared to be?

There was the Bowling Green Massacre.

And we all know what happened in Sweden.

How do we know those two events weren’t related? A lot of the Bowling Green terrorists were blonde, smelled like lingonberries, AND I saw footage blown up to show that a number of them were carrying Allen wrenches!

I think he meant pro-slavery newspapers. I’m pretty sure the slaves didn’t own any papers in SC.

I’m having trouble with the link. Did he actually quote from the newspaper, or are we supposed to take his word for the match?

We have to take his word.

His full quote:
NEWT GINGRICH: Well, look, I think a very good friend of mine teaches Civil War history at Gettysburg College and he has made the case that the parallels between Trump’s inaugural and Lincoln’s inaugural and the reactions to them are amazing.

That if you go and you look at how South Carolina’s slave newspapers responded to Lincoln and then you look at how the left responded to Trump. They are almost verbatim parallels.

And you know, I wish we could all sing Kumbaya and come together but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think what’s going to happen is the left is going to get crazier and crazier.
So yeah, he has this “friend” who remains unnamed.

My guess is

Well, it seems that the Civil War specialist in the History Departments at Gettysburg College is a guy named Peter S. Carmichael. Not sure if this guy is Gingrich’s friend, and i can find no evidence that Carmichael has made any comments about the left’s response to Trump’s election.

I do, however, have some sense of what Carmichael thinks about Trump’s interpretation of history:

If you have a Project Muse account, and are interested in debates over Civil War history and memory, i would also recommend Carmichael’s essay from the journal Southern Cultures, entitled “Truth is mighty & will eventually prevail: Political Correctness, Neo-Confederates, and Robert E. Lee.” It does a good job of sorting out some of the historical and political agendas and ideologies in public debates over how (or whether) to honor Lee and the Confederacy.
