The “problem” is that smart people see through Republican bullshit.
One would think this would be a solution rather than a problem.
It’s that there’s a solid anti-intellectual streak in American life that Santorum can profit by exploiting. It’s not like his comment comes completely out of some random off-the-cuff Twilight Zone of conservative thinking. As statements likely to get a significant number of Americans nodding along, it’s on par with “liver is yucky.”
Half the people are dumber than average. That’s a pretty large voting block and more easily swayed than the upper half.
Wait… did he just call himself and his supporters stupid? Of course, they’re too dumb to realize that. I now have an image of a giant conservative crowd frothing at the mouth, chanting, “We’re not smart! We’re not smart! …”
Aw, c’mon, he was referring to “elite, smart” people *sarcastically *- to imply that that’s how they see themselves.
There’s plenty of *real *Republican stupidity to Pit. This doesn’t count.
"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’ " – Isaac Asimov
Right. If there’s one thing his audience hates, it’s elitists. Which is one of many reasons why they are better than liberals. Also manlier, harder workers, and last but not least, way more patriotic.
Republicans wouldn’t know sarcasm if it moved in next door and married their sister.
That would be polygamy and they’d be against that.
You’re right. It’s such a wide field of stupidity to choose from, and playing the hur-hur game of see how we can faux-interpret his statement is crapulent no matter which side. You don’t even need sarcasm to see his point . It’s a simple sneer against people who think they’re smarter, blh blah blah. I don’t buy or remotely agree with the line of thought, ut it’s not as profoundly absurd as it’s being made out.
But then again, It was Santorum and it was, the value voters ’ summit …
I doubt it. They use “elite” as an insult.
Actually, the really stupid part of that quote is complaining that “smart elites” think they can tell us what to do, while praising the church as the protector of American values - in other words, an organization that tells us what to do.
The difference being that unlike the “smart elites,” the church tells us the right thing to do.
And on the glorious day when the sturch* becomes a reality, doing otherwise will be a punishable offense. Problem solved.
*I first encountered this term in a couple of dystopian s/f novels by Philip José Farmer. Wonder if his estate has ever contemplated a lawsuit?
He finally has said something I can agree with.
“[Obama is] the first African American president using the N-word”
(I didn’t actually read this hate-filled FoxNews piece; I just thought the construction “Obama is the first African American president to {do anything}” is strange, if not stupid.)
By confronting him about having abandoned *Czechoslovakia. *
Wonkette is pretty funny on it:
The image on that article literally made me jump back from my computer screen.
This just in, President Obama said something nasty about his Grandfather in a book published seventeen years ago.
They are full of snark. Rebecca Schoenkoff (I prolly spelled that wrong) has been a favorite of mine since she was an editor at the Orange County Weekly.
