Stupid Republican idea of the day

Not necessarily stupid (at least not for Republicans, especially if it passes) but:

PA Republican legislators introduce a bill to award electoral votes by Congressional district.

When the only tool you have is the gerrymander, everything starts to look like it should be decided by Congressional district…

Plus, as its been mentioned many times in other gun threads: Obama doesn’t want to ban all guns. He has no problems with people hiring personal guards. What he does have a problem with, and wonders about the effectiveness of, is having one or two people trying to defend a school of hundreds or thousands. Something I found out later was that Columbine High School had a security guard who was on duty when the massacre occurred. So the dumbass NRA can’t even get anything to support their stupid plan either

The NRA is truly filled with either nitwits or depraved lunatics. Their plans don’t work and they want everyone to follow them. Another thing I found out recently was that even those gun nuts running the gun shows have rules about not allowing a loaded firearm to be brought in. The fucking hypocrisy is just maddening, and it would be hilarious and deserve to be mocked if their idiotic paranoia didn’t result in so many people being shot every year

It plays well to Republican talking points addicts, that suddenly something every president has done routinely is suddenly so bad when Obama does it. Taking vacations, having the first lady in a feel-good support role, spending any money on protection, raising the debt limit, etc. Bush jr. shattered records on taking vacation during his first term and none of them had any complaints but suddenly Obama taking any vacation makes him a lazy layabout.

Isn’t that where this thread started – over 8200 posts ago? That is a lot of stupidity.

Well, the word “lazy” in association with a black man carries with it coded language that taps into latent racism and white fear, two of the most potent motivators for GOP for the past five years.

Colin Powell (quickly becoming my favorite Republican) cracked the code for us:

Well, duh. The whole point is routine things all presidents do becomes an outrage when a black one does it, because republicans are the party of racists.

Wayne LaPierre says that gun-free zones don’t prevent school violence and should be abolished. It’s certainly a lucky thing for him that all known recordings from the 20th century were destroyed during the Mayan apocalypse, and there’s no way of knowing whether he said the exact opposite 14 years ago.

Oh, wait- there is, and he did.

God should strike me dead for doing anything remotely like defending Wayne LaPierre…but their positions on gun-free schools haven’t changed all that much. The old stance was that schools should be gun-free with the rare exception of trained security personnel. He’s now saying that exception shouldn’t be so rare.

Yeah. Instead of only police and armed security in gun-free zones, he thinks everybody should be armed in gun-free zones. It’s almost identical.

There’s a lot of stupid in Wayne LaPierre, but after 14 years I think he’s entitled to change his mind on gun-free school zones.

Twenty-two years behind the times in Mississippi:

Not only in Mississippi. Mitt’s campaign had that problem repeatedly last year.

See, I always say governors are bad POTUS candidates because they have no foreign policy experience…

If you lie awake at night worried that the guy coming to kill you has access to an illegal gun with a 30 round clip he bought on the Brazillian black market, you’re either

a) paranoid, or
b) not quite the innocent “self-protecting citizen” we’d all like to believe.

I gather Brazilians dislike the US perception that their only major export is jiggling buttcheeks and annoying Disney World tour groups. Maybe a thriving export market in illegal ammunition storage solutions is just what they need.

I’m an old fuck awful-lot-of-coffee joke? Or still culturally aware wax joke? Can’t decide.

Still working on that “outreach” thing:

Maybe the GOP leadership should start its attempts to communicate with minorities and women on a more basic level, like transmitting a sequence of 1s and 0s whose quantity is the product of two prime numbers and which form an image when arrayed accordingly.

They really are getting stupider. I loathed Newt Gingrich and everything he stood for, but he’d at least have given the appearance of trying a lot harder than this.

Will the panel have binders on the conference table, too?

It’s even worse than that - the very title of the thing shows the underlying assumption that minorities and women are each a “them” who has to be “communicated with”, implicitly admitting that they aren’t really welcome as full, integral members of the party.
