Because we have a disturbingly large population that thinks she’s a straight talker, not distracted or weakened by all that high-falutin’ thinkin’ stuff, and that unlike them she can see the *real *truth. Because she and others like her make them feel good about themselves, and have somebody else to blame for their sad lot in life and all the ignorance and lies and irresponsibility they wallow in.
Every society has always had a fair amount of rabble, and they can always be roused.
Some folks feel she’s the bees knees. They still haven’t figured out that apostrophes aren’t used to denote plurals.
Some folks hold their nose and smile though the pain, believing that she brings in the votes for issues that they find important.
The baptism-waterboarding comment is doubly offensive to folks who consider baptism a holy sacrament signifying the grace and forgiveness of God and don’t so much care to have it compared to a barbaric tool of torture. Palin self-identifies as a Christian; she might want to ponder what baptism actually means and why her comment was not just stupid and offensive, but blasphemous.
