I really have to wonder…people like Sen. Ayotte know that NOT informing a suspect of his Miranda rights doesn’t abrogate those rights, correct? It’s not like Mirandizing someone CREATES the rights that Mirandizing informs him of. If you want information, you can not Mirandize, but that would imperil the probability of conviction, wouldn’t it? The rights exist, whether or not the arresting officers say the magic words.

It’s theoretically possible that Sen. Ayotte thinks that the intelligence we could get out of the arrestee is so important that it’s worth effing up the chances of convicting him.

Or it’s possible that Sen. Ayotte is part of the “just detain them indefinitely in Gitmo and never bother bringing them to trial” brigade.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signs bill to freeze Ohio’s renewable energy mandate for the next two years. Why? Apparently because Americans for Prosperity doesn’t like it.

Renewable energy took a major hit in Ohio last week. Republican Gov. John Kasich signed into law Senate Bill 310, freezing the state’s renewable energy mandate for the next two years. The mandate, first implemented in 2008, requires the state’s utilities to incrementally add renewables to their energy mix — one percent every year until 2025, when wind, solar, hydro and biomass sources would eventually comprise 12.5 percent of total power. By making reductions on the demand side, the state aimed to achieve “25% by 2025.” It was a proposal that, at the time, had bipartisan backing, and managed to pass nearly unanimously.

My, how times change. The backlash from the state’s coal-heavy utilities has arrived, says Ed FitzGerald, Kasich’s Democratic opponent, and it’s been helped along by national interests that are using the state as a “lab rat” for their anti-green energy campaigns. Another 29 states and the District of Columbia have passed similar mandates, Kansas’ recently managed to survive a similar attack.

Is that it? Could that be the reason? Are all these republican ideas and behaviors simply misplaced teenage angst.
If we could just get them laid in what ever fashion they choose, maybe all this will go away and they will develop into sensible representatives of a democratic system, and perhaps many years from now look back on what they have said and cringe and chuckle and say " good lord what was I thinking, teenage hormones eh! " and then move forwards as adults?
