On the positive side this thread is feeding itself quite nicely with examples of stupid SJW behaviour.

At a certain point it becomes a closed loop - people who weren’t assholes wouldn’t sound so much like the mass of assholes, would they?
Ooh, the guy who can’t tell the difference between right-wing propaganda and reality when it comes to election results, and who decided that the right thing to do with a professional troll is to invite him onto one’s national TV show for a nice little chat. Great example!
Yeah. I still have no idea what the fuck they’re talking about, though.
I’d say it’s quickly trending towards the former, much like “fake news”.
Let’s see… Taking only your examples from throughout the thread:
[ul]
[li]College students shouting down a retrograde bigot[/li][li]A stupid tweet people mocked and which was summarily removed[/li][li]Random stupid people on twitter saying stupid things[/li][li]An artist asking that a painting they find racially insensitive be taken down[/li][li]Stupid posters on a campus talking about racism in a dumb way[/li][li]A blog post by an anonymous troll that the site then took down, which led the site to strengthen their moderation policies[/li][/ul]
Now, call me a moron, but I don’t see the through-line here. I see each of the things you bring up, but none of it meshes particularly well.
You’re assuming I’m not doing that. Or that I’m not doing both.
Besides, if you’re reading the news right now you’re probably aware something like half the country’s print media journalists are on strike. People and organisation’s priorities are… elsewhere.
In a way I’m merely pointing out the double standard at play. Name-calling is fine when it comes from the Left to the Not Left, it seems, but asking to be treated with the respect they demand makes me a precious snowflake, apparently.
The complete inability of some people here to conduct themselves as adults is, as Ale notes, not doing the Leftist brigade any favours.
…so you’ve interviewed these many many women you work with? When you told them that “equality is no longer an issue” and that there should be “men in media” events, what did they tell you? When you suggested that there should be “men only grants”, what did they say?
How many of the women in your newsroom do you consider were employed on merit? And are you prepared to go up to the women that you think were not employed on merit and tell them that to their faces?
This has only just become an issue for you now? This last week? What were you doing before?
There is no double standard at play. Its just another figment of your imagination. You are in the fucking pit. If you think you can come to the pit to whine about “how good women have it” and then ask to be treated with “respect” then you deserve everything you get. Because you don’t have a fucking clue. If you can’t handle the pit: this place has plenty of other forums that you can consider safe spaces from criticism, go play there.
Ale is being a passive aggressive whiny little snot. If Ale has issues with any specific poster here they should engage with them and not just snipe on the sidelines. Being a passive aggressive whiny little snot isn’t “conducting yourself like an adult”. You don’t get to be a “grown up” just because you refrain from using bad language.
Goddamn fuck shit piss…no! Most of us become grown ups when a snot-sleeved, scabby kneed chaos generator began following us around begging for food and money.
First, kudos for sharing. But I think it’s telling that you handwaved away some concerns Women In Media might have (though I think you’re also self-aware enough to recognize them when they’re pointed out to you).
Women make up the majority of low-level employees in publishing and PR, true. And women probably dominate the “lifestyle” and “soft news” categories (I have no idea and I’ll take your word for it). But what makes you think women want to be in “lifestyle” reporting, or to dominate the world of fluff journalism? I suspect that’s not what you got into journalism for.
Women may be doing most of the work in journalism, but they’re not getting most of the credit and they’re grossly underrepresented in public-facing positions (perhaps the Womens’ Media Center is an unreliable source - obviously it’s an advocacy group - but it seems there similar findings from other sources such as Pew).
What you are doing, in essence, is looking at the number of men and women working in healthcare, and assuming that there is no gender gap because there are more women. What you don’t see is that the majority of women are nurses, and that female doctors are in fact underrepresented and under-employed (this may or may not be true today; it was when my mother was practicing, and I’m just using it as an example).
I have a question. If you really are in “The Media” maybe you can explain something. WHY does the media keep genuflecting to Trump??? Why keep acting as if there’s nothing WRONG with him and his whole gang of psychos and thieves? Why do you fuckers keep trying to normalize him???
Fake news? How about the way “The Media” keeps sucking his dick for him???
Ummm, are we really letting this go that easy?
This is possible weapons grade stupidity here and really needs to be mocked and pointed at some more…
I mean, it really should be mocked, possibly by the whole of humanity.
Could you imagine if this inanity was a tweet? It really reads like something Spicer would say.
Holy shit, this is Donald right?
Tut-tutting over language in the Pit? People are getting soft or perhaps it’s more a case of wanting double standards.
I’m not for a moment saying women in media don’t have some very legitimate concerns - particularly in TV, where there’s still ageism/appearance-ism at play in some places (and which isn’t cool at all).
I have a few theories on this, but one of them is about advertising. LOTS of advertising is marketed at women (various sales insights having identified women as the “primary purchasers” or “purchase influencers” in a household or simply buying more stuff than men).
Given the challenges modern media has staying in the black financially, it makes sense to work some of your content around what advertisers want to be associated with - which is lifestyle products/issues/topics, which are predominantly a female interest, meaning women are more likely to write about them because it’s more likely to be something that appeals to them personally, if that makes sense.
It’s also worth noting there’s a vast amount of Feminist commentary/OpEd/writing on mainstream news websites, including a number of MSM sites devoted to Feminist/Women’s Issues.
There’s very, very few “Meninist” or “Men’s Interest/Issues” equivalents that I’m aware of and just there’s not a huge amount of “Men’s Issue/Interest” stuff in the mainstream print media in Australia, IMHO.
Lots of guys would love to have a job writing about expensive booze, sportscars, Swiss watches which cost as much as a second-hand car, and how the comfort level of a Gulfstream compares to a Learjet.
But private jets, luxury cars and superyacht manufacturers don’t need to advertise in newspapers. If you’re in the market for one of those things, you’ll know how to find out about them, and it won’t be in the classifieds section of your local paper. Because there’s no advertising support, there’s fewer stories about them, thus the higher percentage of softer (but ad-friendly) lifestyle stuff over men-orientated but less “saleable” content.
Some of the best investigative journalists in Australia are female and they do some incredible work. But it’s a reality you don’t see a huge number of men writing celebrity gossip/fashion/entertainment stuff, just as there aren’t a lot of women writing about cricket or motorsport.
And I got into journalism for community news but have written a lot of content on different areas over the years; the “lifestyle” stuff is much less stressful to write than “hard news” and I made a decision early in my career to leave “hard news” to the people who really love that stuff wherever possible. ![]()
I can’t speak for the entire Australian media, but it’s been my experience that women are very well represented in newsrooms and middle or upper management, but perhaps less so when you get to “Executive” level. I agree with your observation about men and women in healthcare, but I suggest that in the media the people at the lower end of the totem pole still have a very loud voice in getting their views into the public sphere/discussion, if that makes sense.
I’m in Australia so I can’t really help you there, I’m afraid. The media environments here are very different, as are our politics.
A former SJW recently wrote a blog entry on why she decided to leave the SJW “cult.”
Keri Smith said that? Wow! Shattering news! I mean, Keri Smith, of all people. I imagine I would be even more devastated if I had any idea who she was.
That’s pretty much my reaction to nearly anything involving blogs.
While that’s interesting, have you ever explored objective metrics of female/male representation and pay equality in that field? Or have you only looked at subjective metrics?
It’s early and I haven’t had any coffee, so could I kindly ask you to rephrase that into something a bit clearer?
I’m not certain that I can, but here goes: you said that your judgement was based on your observations and experiences. Given that that is an entirely subjective reading of the situation, have you ever tried to discover if there is a problem you are unaware of from an objective standpoint?
Or in other words, did you ever think your observations don’t reflect the overall reality?
Thanks, that makes a bit more sense.
That thought has crossed my mind but based on my continued experiences in the media, I don’t believe my observations are incorrect or not representative of reality. There really do seem to be, outside boardrooms and extra-upper management, more women than men in the industry, at least in print and online.
Editorial numbers seem relatively even nationally (pics of striking journos from the Age and Sydney Morning Herald papers seem to show roughly even male/female numbers) but you add in predominantly female advertising departments and HR and lots of other “behind the scenes” stuff and it definitely skews the numbers towards women.
That’s not just based on looking around the office going “Hey, there’s a lot of women here” - that’s also including the email contacts I make with people, the names I see on contact lists, the people I meet at events, the Australian people who keep popping up discussing Australian journalism on social media, that sort of thing.
I have a number of Buds Who Blog … which is why I have a pin that says
“More people have read this button than your blog”
There’s been so much stupid Social Justice Warrior bullshit this past week that it all kinda got stuck in a bottleneck and I couldn’t figure out what to laugh at/despair over first. Thankfully, the answer arrived in the form of this especially weird, spiteful, and petty minded example.
Horrid White Women Culturally Appropriate Burritos - Righteous SJWs Force Them Out of Business
Basically, a couple of white (boo! hissss) women decided to open up a small business selling burritos after being inspired while on a trip to Mexico. Harmless, right? Wrong, motherfuckers! It’s actually an example of white supremacist capitalist heteropatriarchal appropriation, and one of the worst racial injustices ever perpetrated on American soil. Of course, noble Social Justice Warriors weren’t just going to take this flagrant bigotry lying down. The online hive swarmed, the business’s Yelp reviews fell off a cliff, and the business was forced to close.
I’m trying a slightly different tack with this one. Ordinarily, I’d find an article from a mainstream newspaper or a live YouTube video to use as an example. This time, however, I decided to use a source written by someone who clearly thinks that the online bullying campaign was justified. You may think ‘Horrid white women’ is just hyperbole on my part, but you’d be wrong. It’s a quote featured in the linked article. Here’s a few more:
“This week in white nonsense, two white women—Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connely—decided it would be cute to open a food truck after a fateful excursion to Mexico.”
Needless to say, any journalist/blogger/racist/cunt who started an article with the words “This week in black nonsense” would never work in publishing again.
"“…You can eat $5 lobster on the beach,” Connelly said, “which they give you with this bucket of tortillas.” The “they” she was referring to were probably the Mexican “abuelitas” these two women preyed upon in order to appropriate the secrets of their livelihood."
Bolding mine.
“Now don’t get me wrong: cultural customs are meant to be shared. However, that’s not what happens in this city.”
Yeah. Shared on your terms and your terms only, which are subject to change without notice. And woe betide anyone who doesn’t “share” in any way which doesn’t accord with whatever the fuck you think sharing looks like.
"Following the WW’s article, one commenter said: “Now that you all boldly and pretty fucking unapologetically stole the basis of these women’s livelihoods, you can make their exact same product so other white ppl don’t have to be inconvenienced of dealing with a pesky brown middle woman getting in their way. Great job.”
Yeah. Now that you’ve destroyed these two women’s passion project, the people of Portland will once again be free to travel three thousand miles to Tijuana to get their fucking burrito. You dozy fucking cunt.
“People of color are nothing more than an afterthought when the white perpetrators of this tradition continue to do this on a regular basis. While Portland is supposedly a progressive place, super liberal white people usually only have other super white liberal people to answer to—which means this cycle of cultural appropriation will never end until people of color call attention to it.”
It IS a super liberal place! It’s quite possibly the least racist place on Earth. To find racism in Portland you need to go over it like a forensic scientist using a blacklight to find blood spatter which would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. Then again, it is home to fuckwit bloggers who think nothing about starting an article with the line “This week in white nonsense” so there are some racists there.
To all the people in this thread pretending not to know what an SJW is (and yes, you are pretending)…well, you’re not going to get a much clearer example than this.
