suggest some new (good) music to me

I’m bored and am looking to discover some new music. Please suggest some to me.

First, though, a caveat about what I just can’t bring myself to listen to:

-hip-hop/rap
-country
-most classical
-death metal or misanthropic/Satanic/Nat’l Socialist black metal (If you don’t know what this is, don’t ask.)

…so don’t bother telling me to listen to Stone Kold Boyz’n’Hood Death Killaz’ In Yo Face Pig!, or Twang P. Yokel’s Banjo Doo-etts with Mah Sister-Wife, or Rotting Christ’s newest EP, In Hitler wir vertrauten.

And to give you some idea of what I might enjoy, based on what I DO listen to:

Ambient/enigmatic/progressive instrumental: Enigma, Delerium, Lësiem, Patrick O’Hearn, Ronan Hardiman

Heavy metal/industrial metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Queensrÿche, Primordial, Opeth, Meshuggah, Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, Ministry

Neue Deutsche Härte: Rammstein, Eisbrecher, Oomph!

Adult (female) singer/songwriter rock: Sarah McLachlan (especially her old stuff, before she went all “Enya”, and shit), Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow.

So who should I check out?

p.s. Rotting Christ, IIRC, might actually be the name of a real black metal band. From Greece, I think maybe…

If this is the case, scratch that last satirical “EP” title…I haven’t the foggiest notion what their most recent release is titled, nor do I care.

I’d check out Laura Viers and St. Vincent for the female singer/songwriter stuff.

I’ve really enjoyed One_eskimO. I don’t know much about them, but I love their song “Kandi,” which sent me on a iTunes jag. It seems they opened for Tori Amos last year, so there you go.

Touch, Solace, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Sarah? That’s me too. Solace is my favorite album by her because a lot of it is so weird! How great is “Black” anyway?

Ok, I have to do it. Those who know what’s coming can move on to the next post.

There are 6 songs in the player on this page. Listen to the first 5 if you have time (“Oh Holy Night” is the 6th, for Christmastime). Headphones are good.

If you give those 5 a fair chance and don’t like them, move on to someone else. If you’re interested in what you hear, there’s plenty more to be heard, on MySpace and elsewhere. She has 11 albums, and every single one of them can be heard via streaming audio or audio-only on YouTube for free. Not to mention tons of live clips on YouTube. If it’s not your thing, it was worth a try, yeah?

Matisyahu. That song “One Day” is great.

Thanks for the replies. I’m slowly checking out the suggestions I’ve gotten so far. Will post responses once I’ve had time to listen to all.

I’ve just been enjoying Ellen Allien’s new CD, Dust. Cool, ambient-ish techno with wispy, electronically distorted female vocals.

Ulrich Schnauss
The Orb
Banco de Gaia
Air
Jonsi & Alex

You might enjoy Pelican if you don’t already know them. Very good instrumental, ambient, progressive metal band from Chicago. 2005’s The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is their best album, but last year’s What We All Come to Need is very good as well.

I’m also going to throw Quicksand’s song “Fazer” in here. Cool song. 108’s song “Arctic” is cool, too. Judge’s “Take Me Away” is similarly awesome.
