Super Bowl LIX - Game Day

Oh, duh, of course. Except it was the Broncos.

Apparently not.

I wasn’t able to watch the game live, but I caught the NFL highlights video this morning, and the difference in line play was especially apparent in that sped up format. Mahomes was running for his life all game and Hurts generally had all the time in the world. It was strange to me how rattled Mahomes seemed to be by the pressure, though (the pressure the defenders put on him, not the pressure of the moment, I mean). Normally he’s very capable of evading pressure and staying cool, but his throws while under heat in this game were pretty atrocious, and not just the interceptions. Eagles definitely seemed to get into his head.

One other takeaway I had is that Kelce looked slow out there. I doubt he has much gas left in the tank.

it is a philly thing.

jason and kylie supported the eagles yest., even though travis is on the chiefs.

the majority of nfl players will play for more than one team, you can be a fan of the player or a fan of the team. sometimes that will cause conflict.

yes, taylor swift was booed more because she cheers the chiefs. politics not so much.

No, then they cheered heartily for Trump who was famously supporting the Chiefs.

The Eagles were getting pressure with only four rushers - effectively no blitzes, there were a few times where a linebacker would rush but a D-lineman would drop into coverage. That left seven players in coverage - seven very good defensive players in coverage. He had nobody to throw to.

Eagles pass rush was also very disciplined, leaving Mahomes limited escape routes. I think there was only one scramble where he really got away, even then he was chased down after a modest gain.

Watching this game I kept thinking about the Super Bowl two years ago with the Eagles rushers slipping and sliding on that atrocious field and wondering if that game would have turned out differently on a properly prepared field.

I actually think the Chiefs had the right game plan. In spite of the score, their defensive strategy was sound. By selling out to contain Saquon they did have some success limiting the Eagles offense early. Later the wheels came off a bit, but early they were holding their own. Hurts didn’t exactly air it out.

The problem was that the offense didn’t hold up their end. I say this with some experience as a Bears fan, when the offense turns the ball over deep in your own territory and craps out a series of 3 and outs, even the best defense isn’t going to keep you in it for long. The game was lost because the Eagles pass rush dominated the Chiefs protection packages. Simple as that.

Congratulations to the Eagles on a well deserved win. They are an excellent team and I’m so happy everyone got to see it last night. EAGLES!

This, exactly. Take away the pick-6 and the other interception that gave the Eagles a short field right before halftime, and it’s a 10-0 game instead of 24-0. Still quite manageable. But down 24-0, when KC didn’t score on their first possession of the second half, the game was essentially over.

I agree, but I was just surprised that Mahomes seemed so rattled and off with his throws. He did have some opportunities, but was uncharacteristically throwing behind his receivers and in a couple of cases basically into the ground. One of the reasons he has been so great over the years is his ability to scramble and hit his receivers dead on while under pressure. He wasn’t doing that this time. Credit to the Eagles defense indeed! He looked completely overmatched out there.

/facepalm. Of course. Shows you how much of that game I watched…

A YouTube video just reminded me of the great job Jake Eliot did last night. After a shaky year he was dead solid hitting 4 field goals and 4 point afters for a total of 16 points, more than a third of the Eagles score. Two of those field goals were 48 yarders and one for 50 yards, and twice(?) he had to move back after penalties.

Oh come on. It’s not like they pelted her with garbage or murdered her cats or anything. Booing famous supporters of the team you’re currently playing is hardly unique to Eagles fans.

Which I what I would have done. Problem for the Chiefs was the Eagles planned changed very quickly (2nd play) to OK, we’ll have Hurts pass it.

I was reacting to this.
“Turncoats” really?

You ever re-read something you posted whilst under the influence of inebriants and excitement for football, and realize later that maybe it wasn’t as smart/inciteful/accurate as you thought?

I’m hoping that happens to @John_DiFool, because in no way, shape, or form is it true for me. I will reiterate now, while I am totally sober, that it is incredibly stupid to convince yourself that the 15-2 Chiefs team was “mediocre” and just got to the Super Bowl due to luck.

It boggles the mind that @John_DiFool would admit that the 2023 Chiefs were not mediocre, yet the 2024 Chiefs were somehow mediocre, despite the fact the regular season 2024 Chiefs won 4 more games and scored more points (385 to 371) than the 2023 regular season Chiefs. The biggest drop off was in their defense, where they went from having the second best scoring defense in the league (294 points allowed) in 2023 to having the 4th best scoring defense (326 points allowed) in 2024.

But I’ve already spent too much time on this stuff. Feel free to think the Chiefs were just lucky this year, @John_DiFool. Convince yourself that any “mediocre” NFL team can win 15 of 17 games in a season. Have your opinion, feel free to quote whatever stats you think prove it, and live your life to its fullest. Just don’t hold your breathe waiting for someone knowledgeable about football to agree with you.

It’d be a hell of a long tunnel.

But as far as booing TS, we’ve done that two years ago. It’s simply because she roots for the Chiefs. We were hoping she’d date Jason, NOT Travis.

Yup, it seemed like the perfect storm for him. Fangio completely out schemed Reid/Nagy. The running game was non-existent. The OL seemed totally overmatched. The WRs had a series of drops. AND Mahomes played about as poorly as he ever has - even when you couldn’t directly blame the pressure. On that Dejean pick-6, that was 90% Mahomes fault. He was scrambling, but that was a run of the mill play for him normally, but he completely spaced out on the coverage. And this was early in the game.

Mahomes dealt with an uncommon amount of pressure and he also played badly, which is a recipe for being down 30 in the first half.

Literally. Swap the coat of arms (team logo) you wear from that of one side to that of the other side.

Good thing she didn’t start dating a Dallas Cowboy…

WTH? Speak for yourself man, Jason’s got a winner with Kylie.
