Super Bowl XLIV: Indianapolis Colts v. New Orleans Saints (2/7/2010)

Nah, the networks are still scared shitless of another “wardrobe” malfunction, so they’re sticking with “safe” crap.

I guess I never thought of The Fray as dangerous.

Are you willing to pay the fines/legal bills for another wardrobe malfunction? It’s a live, prime time performance before the biggest audience the network is likely to draw all year. BIG money is in play. The networks, the sponsors, and the NFL all want a family friendly show. If they go to younger acts, it’s probably going to be something like the most recent *American Idol * contestants doing a medley, or maybe something from Disney.

Which I definitely would not watch and would spend more time on the Internet complaining about than all the people who don’t like what the NFL is doing currently.

The Who sounded pretty old (as in their voices were shot), but damn if that wasn’t the coolest stage with some of the most amazing lighting/electronics I’ve ever seen…

While I didn’t really care either way, I was expecting the Colts to win by a blowout (reinforcing my overall picks-record in this year’s playoff season.)

It was not a bad game as Superbowls go.

CBS doesn’t have a reputation for being a hip, happening network, even apart from the fallout of Janet’s ‘wardrobe malfunction.’

I have something in my eye.

Those acts would effectively switch off the primary target audience of adults (especially men) over 30. Hell, it would switch off men over 20. Children’s acts aren’t going to sell cars.

Yeah, the reality is that none of the “big” acts of today would draw in an audience of 60-, 50-, 40-, and 30-year olds, who are likely mostly male. There just aren’t many acts that fit the bill. Music today is so segmented, that there are virtually no acts that have a “universal” appeal. You have to go back to the 80s. I think U2 is probably the only band in the world that could even come close to claiming this.

I think John Mellencamp, U2 and Springsteen are the ilk that they’re looking for. They should have snapped up The Police when they reuned - they would have been great. There is an American slant to this, so maybe a reuned Van Halen would work, too.

So a question… I noticed that the captain jerseys (with the “C” on the vest) had four stars, three of which were gold and one was white. Does anybody know the significance of the stars?

The number of stars colored in gold indicates how many years a given player has been a team captain.

Lady Gaga? For a Superbowl halftime show? That would be a bigger fail than Gloria Estefan, Dorothy Hamil and Brian Boitano.

Not only would the audience for the Superbowl not like most of the acts you named, they would largely never have heard of any of them.

They could at least move a couple decades ahead from classic rock and still be old. How about grunge acts from the early 90s? Pearl Jam is still alive, right? As in, none of them pulled a Kurt Cobain?

I thought The Who was a great choice. Sure, they were a little rough, and Roger Daltrey’s pipes aren’t what they used to be, but as an event worthy of the spectacle that the Superbowl has become, they were a perfect fit.

I found it depressing. I kept thinking back to when I saw The Who live at Giants Stadium back around 1990, and though they were old they were awesome. This Superbowl halftime show was 20 years too late.

The halftime show is an excuse for me to run off and do things. Bathroom, check email, smoke break outside, grab more food/drink, move laundry from washer to dryer, etc.

Putting someone worth watching into the halftime show would completely throw off my rhythm.

No matter who performs at the Super Bowl halftime show, just console yourself with this fact: it could be worse. a LOT worse.

I’m 48, which means I’m old enought to have watched Super Bowl 5, where the entire halftime show was (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP, as Dave Barry would say)…
Anita Bryant singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
No joke. THAT’S what the halftime show used to be. Now, at the time, I was a little kid and I thought the entire song was just that once “Glory, glory, Hallelujah” verse. But I found out to my horror that the Battle Hymn has countless verses. Anita sang them all.

So, whether next year’s musical guest is a geriatric British Invasion band, some toothless Motown legend, a cheesy Eighties Hair Band, a country singer with a twenty gallon hat, or even Hannah Montana with the Jonas Brothers, just remind yourself: it COULD have been Anita Bryant!

Well, getting back to the game, I think one of them ost overlooked aspects was not just the call to do the onside kick, but how excellent the kick was itslef by the kicker. Dude kicked across his body, had it go 10-yards, hit the ground and bounce backwards. Good stuff.

Indianapolis resident checking in…

That was disappointing. Caldwell got outcoached (probably because he’s so emotional…), the rookie WRs remembered they were rookies (fine - Garcon is a 2nd year, but he didn’t play much at all last year), the weak links in the secondary were exploited and Peyton got rattled. And all of those were used to perfection by a Saints team hitting on all gears. It was truly a flawless performance by them. No, they didn’t score in the first half like they have all season, but they set themselves up for the win extremely well.

I’m primarily a Chefs fan, and this was hard to swallow. How the hell did the city of Buffalo not commit mass suicide after 4 straight Super Bowl losses?

Actually, a current pop-country act would be perfect. Not my type of music, but at least it’d be contemporary, safe, and would appeal to the heartland. Someone like Garth Brooks or Kenny Chesney.

To appeal to me – a 40 year old classic rock fan – my first choice would be Blacked Eyed Peas. Or how about a chick / group? I’d dig seeing Sherryl Crow or Alannis Morisette. Hell, I’ll even take Katy Perry. My only deal-breaker is putting on no-talent hacks, defined as acts who don’t write their own material and/or do that pathetic karaoke/American Idol overly-inflected trill thing. God I hate that shit.

We’re at the point where a black hip-hop/rap act is a nonstarter, right?
