Super Mario Maker

My 8 year old son recently started watching Super Mario Maker videos on Youtube and is very excited for Friday when it’s released. It does look like fun. I can definitely see a strong Let’s Play life to it. Maybe not as strong as Minecraft, but it has a big creative toolbox and brand name to propel it forward. There are already several cool levels built by the individuals Nintendo gave pre-release versions to.

I figured this thread can serve as a place for sharing videos, SDMB designed levels, advice, and more.

Can’t wait!

1st try:

Hear SMM was really good. I own a Wii U but unfortunately don’t have any interest in getting it due to the backlog of games I own (also have a PS4, Xbox One, and gaming laptop).

Hope your son enjoys it though!

Since Lego Wall-E isn’t out until December, I got SMM for my birthday. Haven’t fired it up yet, but I’m looking forward to making courses. It’s right up my alley.

Mario fans NEED to get this game. My only gripe is that not all the items are unlocked right away and you need to mess with the Wii U’s internal clock to get them!!! Or you can wait… either way, it’s annoying.

But, yeah, otherwise it’s amazing to see what other people come up with.

We had some Internet problems over the weekend and couldn’t upload or play Course World. My son has been making and playing a lot. We only have 2 amiibos so he’s doing the 100-Mario challenge non-stop to unlock more once we got the Internet back.

Here is his first upload course

It is insane as only an 8 year-old boy can do. Make sure to press left as soon as it starts.

Here is my first course
BB10-0000-0036-AC20
It is Metroid influenced by requiring specific power-ups to get past certain areas of the maze.

Here’s another one I made inspired by Star Wars called “That’s no moon!”

It’s interesting to see the different types of levels being made. Some are precision platformers that need perfect jumping, dashing, and power use. Some are short exercises that almost anyone with a little skill can pass. Others are automatic rollercoasters, they are fun to watch but don’t quite scratch that Mario itch. And then there are the levels my son makes. He loves to throw countless enemies in random arrangements with secret blocks with enemies everywhere and doors that lead to death.

I’ve been focusing on making simple levels.

Here’s my first:
574D-0000-0043-628C

Fairly regular Mario level except you have to bounce a mushroom to the end of the level in order to get to the goal.

Second is Claustrophobia:
CD38-0000-0043-DB12

Single screen level where you have to get past ghosts and Dry Bones with not a lot of room for jumping.
