The last two episodes were pretty flat (though, really, I guess it’s unrealistic to think the show could have sustained the awesomeness that was the first four episodes), so this one was a welcome return to form.
LOVED how in sync the boys were, making the same connections, working out the anagram simultaneously, making the same Matlock jokes, communicating with just a few glances and twitches of the eyebrow. (Is it just me or was Jensen Ackles exceptionally beautiful tonight, especially in the “confession” scene? And Jared Padalecki exceptionally hot, especially in the basement scene with the awesome Linda Blair? They’ve always been smokin’ but this week they, like, turned it up to 12.)
LOVED the continuity with “Skin” – this show is fantastic at carrying things through. Also, the reference to the Shining was a call-back to “Asylum.”
The ghost wasn’t that scary to me, except when she appeared through the glass in the wife’s (Karen? Kristen?) house. Eep.
Next week? I literally clapped my hands and squealed like a little girl after the preview. Oh my God. Is it Thursday yet?
Hehe, Jason Gedrick is among those considered show-killers (like Ted McGinley), isn’t he?
Kytheriea, you need to come back to life! Save being dead for after next week.
You know, even if they didn’t do the whole “Dean wants his dad back and is willing to sell his soul to get him” (which, oh my God, Dean, you sweet, broken, wonderful, lovely, golden, selfless man…LOVE YOU), the Robert Johnson soul-selling legend is such a cool story and would totally be worth bouncing in anticipation for. And then add in Dean’s sacrifice…God almighty.
But does Sam know? Sam couldn’t possibly agree to that. So what’s it going to do to Sam?! AAAGH, where’s a time machine when you need one?
It all held together so nicely – very well written. This would be the episode to recommend to friends who haven’t seen one yet. Just perfect. Sam’s hair even looked good!
My TiVo cut off the previews though, dammit. Guess I’ll be surprised.
AuntiePam, you cannot be allowed to go a week without seeing the previews! If you go here and click on the link that says “promo” under the heading for “The Usual Suspects” (the first entry under the big picture), you’ll get the previews in a zip file.
Also, if you go to The CW’s site, they’ll be uploading the previews and a ~1 minute clip from next week (under “Director’s Cut”) sometime today or tomorrow.
I loved the lead-in with the boys various impersonations. They’d make good trivia questions.
Sam as “Mr. Berkovitz?”
Federal marshals
Environmental study majors
Priests
US Wildlife Service
Doctors
Art dealers
Forest rangers
Students
Fraternity brothers
Homeland Security officers
Another thing I liked about this episode was that Linda Blair’s character didn’t go through the “This can’t be happening, it’s not real, I don’t believe what I’m seeing!” thing. Some shows would draw it out, but one glimpse of the Death Omen was enough. Good for her!
I never noticed before that Dean was “Nigel Tufnel” once. Add that to playing “Stonehenge” a couple of weeks back, and I’m digging the additional 80s music references.
Did anyone catch last week when the boys joked that they were going to go save a girl from a California cult–Katie Holmes? It made me giggle.
After reading this thread, I’m starting to wonder if I’m the only “Supernatural” fan who isn’t a melodramatic 16-year-old girl.
Good to see Linda Blair; actually didn’t recognize her at first. I anticipated who the killer was pretty early, but it was still fun to see things work out. (Although when I write a show, you’ll never see the cliche of a beloved character, gun pointed at him, saved at the last possible second by the timely arrival of help. It’d be nice if that happened in real life, but in fiction it’s just lazy writing.)
Enjoyed last week’s episode; I was hoping it’d be H. H. Holmes (after the connection with the prison was revealed), and wasn’t disappointed. If they really want to get into the darker side of American history, there’s plenty more material.
I guess it’s the smartass attitude that keeps me watching. That, the excellent rock soundtrack and that bitchin’ Impala. (Just wouldn’t be the same if they were crisscrossing the country in a practical Honda Civic. For some jobs, you want to be driving 3,500 pounds of Detroit iron.)
Sorry for being a bit snarky. In my own defense, I’m also a bit drunk. Come to think of it, I’d like to see an episode where Dean and Sam really tie one on. God knows I would. (Actually, I would totally want to be a demon hunter, if that stuff existed and it were a real job.)
Hey, I’m almost 30! There’s just something about this show that makes me giddy (and the physical beauty of the two leads is only a fraction of that…no, really). There’s actual character development and continuity and kickass music and the awesome car and, best of all, the fascinating family dynamics between the two brothers and their father. There’s just so much to love.
And, of course, they’ve sent out an open invitation for Bruce Campbell to guest star whenever he so desires. THAT would be awesome. Him or the Rock.
I loved this episode, it underlined yet again how well they work together and what their diffirences are as people. They’re not falling to pieces, they react to the things they’ve fought in a “realistic” way. Well…reasonably, considering the ghoulies.
I also liked the H.H. Holmes episode, being a weird history junkie . So far I have no complaints about this show-all the episodes have been pretty strong.
Being knee-deep in Faust studies lately, my ears perked-up a bit when I saw Dean at the crossroads. I suspect they’ll probably stick with the Robert Johnson legend (it’s an urban tale, it’s about music–all fitting with the show), but it’d be cool if they went back even further and drew upon enough Goethe that they also throw in a Walpurgis Night. Hell, it’d be cool if they had a mini-Faust tale in one episode.
The show’s improved a lot lately, and I think that’s probably because Ben Edlund is now writing and producing it. He’s the guy who created The Tick, and he worked on both Firefly and Angel (final season). I only wish they’d introduce a woman character who’s more than just a pretty face. All the women have been gorgeous and, well, victims; I’d like to see that change for the better. (They have introduced the girl who played Meg on Veronica Mars–the bar owner’s daughter–but I hope she turns out tougher than how she appeared in the Holmes episode.)
I also want them to finish the demon story-arc; I don’t want them to get so mired in it that they can’t get out of it in a graceful manner. Unfortunately, I fear that may happen since they’ve dragged it into a second season; I only hope they have a good plan.
