I thought the scene where Dean uses explosives (too much) and breaks the sword, kind of fell flat. I was hoping that Dean would have to call Sam to fly over, Sam grabs the sword and slides it out effortlessly, giving Dean a puzzled look, would have been a lot funnier.
When Sam came out when Dean and Bobby were getting ready to leave, he looked like a great big puppy.
I’m having a tough time getting Purgatory to agree with what I learned about Purgatory as a kid. We learned it was a place of temporary suffering to achieve purification, not some sort of monster afterlife.
I was disappointed a bit that we didn’t actually see a dragon (other than the, uh, dragon-men; Trogdor!!!) or even just a shadow to hint at the shape.
Also kinda wished that Kali hadn’t been rescued by the bros last season; she would have made a good Big Bad.
Wondering if Mother really is Gaia, or Mother in another sense, like maybe some other mythical creation god of some sort. Wasn’t Tiamat supposed to be a dragon that had a part in creation?
Actually I just looked it up, and Tiamat not only was part of the creation process, but she also created monsters and part of the name Tiamat means “mother.” So my money is on Tiamat.
Wow, interesting that everyone is getting “Gaia” from “Mother”. I assumed it was either Lilith or Eve. But maybe I’ve been reading too many Vertigo comics.
I was thinking she was going to be Grendel’s mother, and they (the writers) were going to extend that idea so that Grendel’s mother was the mother of all monsters.
But perhaps it’s too soon after Angelina Jolie in Beowulf.
Another clue which I think points to Tiamat instead of Echidna; Bobby couldn’t make heads or tails of the writing except the word “mother” repeated over and over again. I would expect anything about Echidna to be in Greek, and would likely refer to her by name instead of “mother,” while Tiamat is Babylonian and her name literally means “Life Mother”, so if her name was repeated over and over in the text, and Bobby could only make out “Mother” it would make sense for him to see it over and over.
Kind of surprised that the boys didn’t call Cass right away for a quickie interpretation of the text. I know he’s busy and all, and he left in a huff, but he did come to deliver some exposition to Sam, I would think something like the revival of the Mother of All Monsters (whoever she turns out to be) might be worthy of a peek or two.
Because they said “the mother of all” which Lilith isn’t. Not to mention we’ve already had Lilith on Supernatural (not that she bore much resemblance to the one from Jewish mythology).
jsgoddess, I’ve been doing some research into limbo (for a story) and there were/are apparently a lot of people who have concepts like it, though not identical. It wouldn’t surprise me if there weren’t other versions of purgatory besides the one from catholicism too.
