Technically speaking, Yahweh was probably a Ba’al clone. I.e. an ancient group of semi-nomadic Canaanites wanted their own god like Ba’al, but wanted him to be personal to them, so they either renamed him for their use or morphed one of their tribal gods to have all of the same attributes.
The demonization of Ba’al is likely because at the time when the various groups of tribes (Amorites, Israelites, Moabites, etc.) all started to pull together into a single political force, which of all of the Ba’al equivalents to promote as the national god required a bit of mudslinging. Chemosh, Moloch, and Moab were of course some of the other competition, and were demonized as well.
