Surprising Places Where St. Patrick's Day Is Observed

Yeah, happy St. Paddy’s Day (and you’ll notice that two D’s is the proper way to spell it  ).

I was just wondering, recently in fact. Everyone knows St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland (duh :slightly_smiling_face: ). And the USA, Canada, Australia, etc. for obvious reasons.

Where else is it celebrated? And are there any places where it’s celebrated that would really surprise you?

:slightly_smiling_face:

According to Wiki

Malta, Norway, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, Scotland, Lithuania, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and the International Space Station.

I’m not religious, but I’m spiritual. I celebrated St Patrick’s Day last weekend. I also celebrated St Practice Day the weekend before that.

Currently in recovery mode.

You should celebrate today, too! It’s St. Patrick’s Day!

That’ll be my excuse for opening a cellared beer.

Nice. IPA? Stout?

Either a stout or a sour. My collection is heavy in that area. IPAs get consumed immediately, I’m afraid.

Well, it’s a good thing that you are doing. Go forth in goodness.

Well, I’ve seen Irish pubs everywhere I went in the world, and I guess that in everyone of them there is a party today.

I once got into big trouble with my Irish grandmother when she overheard my conversation with my Mexican brother in law. I was mentioning the scarcity of Irish restaurants versus the ubiquity of Irish bars, while Mexican restaurants were every freaking where. Irish food sucks, I told him, and Grandma would have killed me if I hadn’t been in the bloodline.
What about Irish stew? She says. And that was it, I’m not about to argue with her about it. But… stew? Really? Meat, potatoes and/or veggies in gravy? Grandma, that’s a dish that every group of localized humans on this planet has come up with.
It was just a thing I said to my BIL, i wasn’t saying that there is no good Irish food, but compared to Mexican food? Let’s go to a Mexican restaurant, then an Irish bar.

My wife is FROM Ireland and she doesn’t celebrate it. She’s convinced the secular holiday was invented by Guinness the same way Valentine’s Day was invented by Hallmark. Apparently, it was just a minor Church holiday in Ireland when she immigrated to the US in the 1980s. Since then the holiday has been reimported from the US as an excuse to get drunk. She scoffs whenever anyone tells her that; “The Irish have never needed an excuse to get drunk.”

Just heard today on the radio that the only other place in the world where today is a holiday, other than Ireland, is the Caribbean nation of Montserrat.

So I ended up opening my “mystery stout”. I won it 4-6 years ago at a bar. It has a $36 sticker on the bomber bottle. I remember it being a barrel aged stout, and that’s exactly what it tastes like. Crazy high %ABV, too.

When I brought it home years ago after winning it the bottle got wet and I lost the label. Oh is this good! :beers:

Happy St. Patrick’s day!

Well, here is an ode to ancient Irish traditions.

The mention in Wikipedia only describes college students. Most people have no clue. On St. Patrick’s Day I mentioned I was wearing green because of St. Patrick’s Day and I just got puzzled looks.

There are a few (more than a few) Irish and British pubs in Switzerland. They and their guests have observed the day in the traditional manner.
