Remember that he had to plan the lie ahead of time, and there was no time to discuss it at the competition. So the decision to do it or not had to be based on theoretical worth, not actual worth. Theoretically, it doesn’t have a downside, unless you’re caught, so I can see the rationale.
Tangent, I think the move will play out to their benefit. Now Darrah is totally isolated and if they play her right, they should be able to totally control her votes. I figure next week Sandra and Christa will work on Lill, trying to prove to her that she will be dumped when she is in the final three. If that happens, Burton and Jon will be sent walking over the next two weeks.
I think it was well played and I give them credit. In most of these shows, people stick to one strategy and never modify it, even when something better presents itself. Unless a person keeps their options open, they usually don’t win.
As for the fish, that will be another reunion show topic which will be very interesting.
I’m going to crack up if Jon’s grandma is at the reunion, smiling proudly at her grandson.
I hate Sandra. Although the dead grandma lie was the scummiest, letting Christa take the fall for the fish bucket was pretty lame too. Plus, she didn’t know that Jon was lying about his grandma so she could have at least pretended to be sad.
Maybe. But Lill seems to be pretty strongly allied with Burton and Jon at the moment. They are promising her at least a spot in the final three, maybe final two. Can Sandra and Christa give her any better deal than that? Nope.
As it is they made a tenuous alliance with Tijuana and Darrah, with whom they could have picked off Burton, Jon, and Lill. That was a good plan. Then they told Jon about their plan and then they let him talk them out of it and into doing EXACTLY what he wanted them to do. Jon convinced them to break their own majority alliance. Very poor strategy on Christa and Sandra’s part, IMHO.
jon is shrewd even though the “lie” was low-ball tactics. The game is all about outlast, outwit and outwhatever. And he’s outwitted them with this lie. I want him to do well just for this lie. I also want Sandra to do well with her lie. This is a nice change where we actually see people lying through their teeth and concealing it. I would love to see a secret alliance between sandra and jon, but I don’t see it. they have too much heat between them, if that’s a secret alliance they sure are great actors.
I really want Lill off the island. Her facial expressions, her whole I can’t tell a lie moral standard disgusts me. in real life that quality is commendable, but in this game, I can’t stand people with moral standards. They don’t get me interested in the game or in them. I like tension, cunning and bloc making.
Too bad, it looks like the women are going to team up next week. Jon and Burt are dead… and I wanted to see Jon get to the end.
And man is the reunion show gonna rock. We definitely can’t miss that doozy.
She seemed sorry to let Christa take the rap for the fish, but she was smart to keep her mouth shut. If she’d said anything, she would surely have been next out because she already had a history of being outspoken. Besides, even if people thought Christa was guilty, there was no proof. A confession would’ve given the others no hesitation to vote Sandra out. The heat on Christa died out, though, and Sandra was able to negotiate a deal that kept her–and Christa–on the island another three days.
As for Sandra’s reaction to Jon’s “news,” she was the only one with enough guile to see through the fucker. She just told everyone what a deceitful prick Jon is and they still bought his scam.
Voting Tijuana off and keeping Burton was risky, but could pay off. Right now the closest thing Sandra and Christa have to a person they can count on is each other, so it makes sense to try to keep each other on. The deal with Darrah and Tijuana wasn’t ideal because Tijuana insisted on voting Christa off next, which obviously was not acceptable to Sandra. Although it’s very possible that Burton may pull a Colby and win every remaining immunity challenge, he still may not win the next one. Then, Darrah, Christa and Sandra can try to convince Jon to vote Burton out, then Lill and then they can get rid of Johnny Fairplay.
BTW, I thought it was funny that Jon’s friend calls him Johnny Fairplay also. What a pair of creeps.
Burton’s been winning a helluva lot of the challenges lately. Seems to me they should have taken this opportunity to give him the boot.
Do Sandra and Christa think they are better off with the Jon-Lill-Burton alliance than the T-Darrah alliance? Wouldn’t a temporary “girl pact” with the 4 of them go farther than a 2 versus three thing with Burton et al? They know as soon as darrah is gone, they are next. At least they know if the 4 of them are left, it comes down to 2 versus 2 and they have a shot.
Jon is like, the most disgusting little rat-boy ever. The fact that he’s not going to take any heat for this made me fling my breadstick across the room. Gah.
Which to me seems like exactly what the producers of the show wanted to happen. Now that Rupert is gone, the show has become even more interesting. Don’t get me wrong, my wife and I were really hoping he would win but before he was voted off, Survivor was nothing but “Survivor, Rupert and some people on an island”. Now everyone is cutting each others throats with no loyalty, in true pirate fashion.
I was listening to an interview with Jeff on a local radio station and he said the only two rules in the game are that the contestant can’t strike each other and they can’t agree to split the money, so anything else goes. Jon is scummy for doing it but it got him further toward a million dollars and will make the reunion show much more interesting.
Did anyone else feel disgusted by Rupers whiny, “so much for my dreams” speech?
Why are so many people knocking Rupert’s farewell speech? In my opinion, he gave one of the few good ones. (One other one would be Hunter’s when he said “I hope all you knuckleheads starve to death.”) These people just voted you off; pretending it doesn’t bother you is hypocritical.
As for Jon, wow, I thought he had sunk as low as possible, but he was down there with a shovel. Even worse than the fact that he was willing to pretend his grandmother died for the sake of a passing advantage is the fact that he planned the whole scenario out ahead of time. Consider the depths of deceit that that indicates.
Jeff Probst obviously saw the tape from the camp and knows that Jon is lying. He was being almost flippant about the supposed death in the Tribal Council. So you know he’s not going to let it drop. From now on he’s going to keep the subject going and force Jon to dig himself in deeper and deeper.
Sandra destroyed any admiration I had for her by her performance this week. Dumping the fish was wrong, letting your closest ally take the blame was wrong (especially bringing it up again at the TC), trying to push Jon’s friend off the plank was wrong (both from a moral and political view), and betraying Tijuana and trusting Jon was incredibly wrong.
Time will tell, of course, but I firmly believe that Sandra’s actions tonight will keep her in this game for at least a few more episodes.
And I would LOVE for Jeff to put some heat on Jon at Tribal Council for the big lie.
I found this episode very amusing. Especially when Jon swore on his undead Gramma’s grave.
I know this is just a show and not everybody watches these things or takes them too seriously. But is Jon making himself trouble in his life after survivor? He’s shown everybody in TV land what a liar and cheat he’ll be for money.
Arrr matey, the fiercest contest on the seven seas. Pirate boggle!
I missed it! Damn. And at least 3 people at work reminded me that it was on tonight.
Who had their immunity stripped and why? T got voted off, yes?
As mentioned in my previous hilarious post, the immunity challenge was basically boggle. When you thought you had the required number of words, Jeff would look them over. If you made any spelling mistakes, you were out of the game. Burton won, but as they were leaving, Jeff noticed that Burton had made a spelling mistake (on the word liaison - he spelt it liason), so they took it away from him and started a new game with the contestents left (about 4 people). Not a big deal.
I think Sandra’s playing a very deep, smart game. She seems to be working very hard to make sure that the only peope left against her in the final 3 are people the jury will be angry at.
She threw her vote away last week, ensuring that no matter way Lill went, Rupert would go. But there was no sign to the others that she had done this, and all the arguments she started upon return to camp distracted everyone from asking who cast the odd vote.
She’s made a point of making sure no one trusts John. People already dislike Burton and Lill just because of the “outcasts return” thing, to say nothing of the personality traits that got them booted in the first place. She’s got lots of people ticked off at Christa for the fish thing. She’s been very good at keeping dissension in the camp high (reporting on Jon & Burton’s secret talks, dragging Ti along to hear one of them).
Why the vote this week? If Sandra stays with the all-girl alliance, she risks winding up in the final with Darrah or Ti, neither of whom have ticked off the jury to any great degree. The vote could easily go against her. But now she’s alngling to get into a final three with any of: Burton, Jon, Lill, & Christa, all of whom have significant strikes against them in the minds of the jury.
Really. If you’re going to sacrifice all shreds of any scruples you may have held, try to get something better in return than an evening alone with your same-sex buddy.
Least. Exciting. Immunity Challenge. EVER!
Hey, it’s great that they’re mixing it up and not having another physical challenge, but come on!
Oh, and the ‘walk the plank’ reward challenge was a cool idea, but they set it up AGAIN so that the contestants basically chose which person they wanted to win (see the previous two immunity challenges). It made for interesting television this time by pure luck because of Jon’s Big Lie[sup]TM[/sup], but they are leaning on that crutch too often.
I agree with this. I was thinking the best way to go, was to get rid of Burton since he’s such a threat. When Tijuana went to Jon with the plan, that changed everything. Since Sandra and Christa then knew they couldn’t trust her, they’d have been screwed at the next TC with Christa going (barring an immunity win). I think Tijuana tried to make too many alliances over this one TC and it cost her the game.
I thought throwing out the fish was funny. Would I do it in real life? No way. Christa and Sandra already had huge targets on their backs at that point, and if you read Burton’s transcript, he hasn’t liked Christa from day one. She’d have been a scapegoat no matter what.
I liked Sandra’s sneaking with Tijuana. What I can’t believe is that T didn’t realize the pecking order from the RC. I thought Jon’s stunt was funny, too. If outcasts have been outlasted and then came back, why not? While I wouldn’t looked with approval on a lot of these actions in real life, it’s a game, and they’re pirates. Arrrr!
Biggirl, I feel your pain. I laid down for a nap and woke up at 9:05, realizing I had set my damn alarm for 7:45PM!!!
Pissed me off!
Anyways, I’ve been checking a few recaps, but the one thing I can’t seem to find out is who declared who a sworn enemy for life, and why? I just haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere.
And did Rupert really wear that same stupid shirt at tribal council?!?
Ah, damn. This is happening too much now. I meant 7:45 AM.
Preview shoud be my friend.
