Survivor 37: David vs. Goliath Premieres Tonight

Yeah it’s always interesting to me how long the seasons can feel - Jeremy had a pretty memorable blowup with Nataile but it was so early in the season it felt like ages ago. I read that he left Ponderosa early and that’s why he wasn’t there at the reunion.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with SlackerInc that the Goliaths probably did band together and got the Davids to screw up their majority, but the edit glossed over this to try and make it look like a “no more tribes” game. After all, Nick won three straight immunities to make it to the end and was clearly left out of the Davie vote. Now I think that Mike/Kara/Angelina did a good job of playing under-the-radar and convincing the Davids to go after themselves as threats, and suddenly they’re back in control. But since Nick won in the end the storyline gets framed differently.

Speaking of driving a storyline, they really tried hard with Angelina finding that HII at the end, huh? Even though she was unable to acquire it herself, lost the clue, overdramatized the danger, and ended up needing help from the two guys to get it. And then tried to make a false dramatic moment with Alison. Yeah, sorry, Angelina is not the sort of person/situation you want to use as an example for women’s power or anything.

The actor (Nico Santos) is also a main cast member on Superstore, which is a sit-com… can’t remember if Probst mentioned that or not (since it’s an NBC show). It was definitely weird to me to see him on a Survivor finale… small world!

I liked Christian about half way through the season, but he started seeming like a pretentsious douche, was very unlikable when he was voted out.

Regarding Jeremy, what I heard is that after being voted out he insisted on going home immediately, rather than staying until filming ended as is customary.

Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing this.

What I wonder is: why does Nick winning in the end mean they had to obscure this in the editing? Isn’t “oh crap, we got too focused on each other and our tunnel-vision hubris let the Goliaths take back control” followed by “now for a David to win, it’s going to require going on an immunity tear, and one actually pulled it off!” still a compelling narrative?

This, and then some.
I’ve tried to defend Angelina here in the past; I thought maybe she was a bit out of touch but not necessarily mean-spirited or anything. But she totally lost me over the fake HII move. No reason at all to do that except to be petty. I loved that Nick called her out when she tried to claim it wasn’t to embarrass Alison. And then she pretty much all but admitted that it was.

I also had to laugh when, immediately after Nick declared he was sending Mike and Cara to the fire challenge because there was no way Angelina could win, she gushed “I convinced Nick to take me to the final three!”

Kinda like they say about poker: if you can’t tell who they’re dragging to the Final 3 to be the goat…it’s you.

What ever happened to the “Fan Favorite” award? Or did I doze through it?

How long were you dozing? They haven’t done fan favorite since 2012.

I wondered where this beard came from.

LOL

(You’re not the famous Vikings fan Chicken Fingers, are you?)

They used to give a car (or truck) as a reward too. Now it is a spaghetti dinner for three.

And first prize was a Million dollars 18 years ago. And it is still a Million dollars.

Considering that the five main Big Bang Theory actors EACH get a Million Dollars per episode (wiki source), what does the P/L statement look like for a season of Survivor? Ka-Ching Ka-Ching!

How about a season made up of 16-18 people who got voted off first? Or got voted off in the first 2-3 of their season?

I know Jeff has talked before about some GREAT people who never got a chance to shine.

I’ve had the same idea, of a season of nothing but first-one-out (“Survivor: Second Chance”). But we would need to come to grips with the fact that some poor schmuck would have the dubious distinction of being the first one voted off, twice.

Of course and my wife said this last night when I mentioned it. Still, I bet some amazing contestants have had bad luck.

Unfortunately I think Francesca has already suffered this fate (Redemption Island and Caramoan seasons).

Indeed she did, which really pissed me off. First off because she is awesome. But you should just not do that to someone (talking about the people who voted her off the second time). Wait until the second boot at least!

No one would remember Francesca if she weren’t the first boot, twice.

I would! In her very limited time in her first appearance she very quickly became one of my favorite players. And I have seen every season in its entirety, except for China.

Nick was on track to being the first voted out this season until, that guy fell in the boat and had to be medivaced.

Why did they want to vote him out?
