Survivor 37: David vs. Goliath Premieres Tonight

The castaways are already used to “no talking.” Basically every time they travel anywhere (challenges, tribal, etc.) they aren’t allowed to talk.

If they are listening all the time when they aren’t going to use the footage.

I caught up with this episode tonight. When she was giving a confessional at one point (before TC), she was wearing a gray/taupe button down sweater. Not sure where she got that from nor where it went.

Cochrane mentioned once in an interview that before they even get picked for the show, they spend a weekend at a hotel with a bunch of other prospective contestants, just hanging out together. They’re not allowed to talk to each other. They’re told it’s to see how they look on camera, how they react to it, how they visually interact with each other. It might just be to see if they can really go hours without talking to anybody.

“I got to sit next to Natalie at the Reunion”

  • Lyrsa

Yeah, I LOLed at that. Nevermind I just lost my chance of winning a million dollars – I have to go back to spending time with NATALIE.

I think this is the first time this season where the editing felt like it was purposely misleading, making it feel obvious Angelina was going home instead of Lyrsa. They showed Mike being unsure but never showed Nick doing the same (at least that I saw). Ah well.

Really looking forward to the merge, this episode did do a good job of showing the cracks in all the original tribes (Carl/Elizabeth, Gabby worrying about Christian moving towards the other boys, Mike and Nick’s cross-tribe alliance). There’s three idols and an idol nullifier.

I’ve said it before: I wish we could see the pre-merge Ponderosa. It would be classic to see Lyrsa arriving and seeing Natalie!

I agree they were being very misleading with the editing. Another thing I’ve said many times before: I wish there was a “pro” version of the show that was edited for us to see the most clarifying, sequential version of what happened each week.

Agreed, and not only did they never show Nick being unsure, they showed him being positively sure he was staying loyal to Lyrsa. In multiple different confessionals.

I’ve read in interviews, but have no cite, that the pre-jury survivors aren’t kept together, or even anywhere near the game - they get flown back to the USA and are just kept sequestered there. That’s was cheaper & easier than finding a place for them to reside in the game area. That may have changed now that they use a permanent filming location though.

Don’t think this is correct. Last season Bradley was the last pre-merge boot and he spent the rest of the game in Australia with the rest of the pre-merge bootees. Much of it a hospital. He went 26 days without a BM.

But they did move the non-jury folks away from the game, since there was no need to bring them to each Tribal Council. And as I understood it, those voted out early aren’t kept separate from the rest of the world like the jurors are, so they don’t have to spend any time together. So hopefully Lyrsa can keep her distance from Natalie.

I thought they did keep them out of sight so spoiler sites can’t leak the composition of the jury,

It was a good play to try to disrupt the Goliaths by outing Angelina. But Elizabeth’s pitch to Goliaths to flip at at TC was just so bad. Almost like she was trying to encourage them to stick together.

Based on next week’s previews it appears that Elizabeth’s attempt to break apart the Goliath alliance may actually work. Just too late to benefit her.

What I don’t get is why all of the Davids turned on Elizabeth. You’d think the members of the Secret Six, at least, would stick to their roles until the time comes to make their move.

I’d have to look at the votes of past seasons to be fair, but perhaps I was expecting too much from the merge episode… I think the bombshell, game-realigning votes usually come an ep or two after the merge, while the merge vote itself is usually ho-hum because people are still feeling out the new relationships and stick with what they know. Certainly seemed to happen tonight. I was a little surprised the other Davids were happy to give up Elizabeth as a sacrifice, but I suppose most of them feel like they have later-developing options with Goliaths, and Carl just didn’t like her. I think Davey’s the only one we really didn’t hear from (and he has an idol IIRC).

Angelina’s target actually makes sense - everyone loves Christian, and I think you have to be honest and say, could anyone beat him at a FTC? But she’s not doing a good job selling it and everyone else’s personal dislike for her will clearly cost her IMO.

Interesting design on the immunity challenge. At first I thought you couldn’t even touch the sides (which would’ve made it a 30 second challenge) but even being allowed to do so, pretty tough.

It’s pretty far into the game but I’m just learning people’s names. That can’t be a good sign. I think the whole David v Goliath premise was interesting in theory, but not so interesting in reality. I mean, yes, the challenges might involve a puzzle or two, but it also involves a lot of coordination, strength, and balance, which athletic people have more of than cerebral people. And the Davids of the world are already used to not getting invited to the party, so it’s kind of heartbreaking to see them feel so marginalized again by the pretty people. Alas.

I hope that Gabby wins. She tugs at my heartstrings. Angelina tries really hard to be a good person but it just isn’t in her to look beyond herself, I’m afraid.

I’m surprised that the SWAT team guy can’t control his emotions better. I actually used to know a SWAT team guy, and getting him to emote took a lot of work.

Christian’s correction of the word “factorial” v. “exponential” was one of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard on Survivor.

That is all.

I love both Christian and Mike White so much. I was super psyched to see that they are apparently working together, and I hope that continues to the end.

I think her mistake is she’s already gunning way too hard about the final tribal when it’s only the first merge vote. You can start making those moves quietly, but being so upfront about it puts a huge target on your back.

Wow, great episode! The Davids were brilliant! So they go into tribal thinking that Davie would save Christian. They also (probably) know that Dan has an idol and even though he doesn’t like her, he would play it to save Angelina and maintain Goliath dominance. At that point (in their thinking) the Goliaths probably thought ‘we will get him (Christian) in the re-vote’.

What they didn’t count on was the Davids splitting the vote just in case. Blindside John. I hated to see him go but absolutely brilliant play.
