Survivor 4/10/13 Cut Off the Head of the Snake

And it’s another week of Survivor!
The wishful thinking side of me says the title implies Philip may be targeted this week.

The cynic (and realist) says this is a quote that Philip is saying about someone who’s trying to get rid of him.

Guess there’s only one way to find out…

The previews are making it sound like the “all strong guy” alliance is going to become public knowledge.

I’m gonna lay down my prediction now: Cochran is going to win. Everyone likes him, no one thinks of him as a challenge threat, he’s got an ally he can rely on in Dawn, and he’s smart enough to win a puzzle-based challenge later on when he needs to. Last time he seemed star-struck, this time he seems to be really plugged in and knows what’s going on.

“Dude, they all just wrote my name down. Give me the idol.”

Heh.

Holt crap that was awesome.

Guess Malcolm was watching them write a “M”

So - did Malcolm just completely and utterly screw over his bro alliance? I admit, he’s sitting pretty with the only idol, but he’s got no friends now.

I think Malcolm put a huge target on his back with the rest of the Favorites.

That was so awesome. My two favorites who I’d like to see go to the end are Malcolm and Andrea, so this episode was terrible until the stunning twist ending. I’ve never before been rooting for the two heads of opposing alliances.

Great strategy on the part of the favorites flushing the idol out. By contrast, terrible strategy from Malcolm going to Dawn after the lesson of Corinne last week. However, he did keep his HII and kept it secret, so that’s a plus.

The only thing I can’t figure out is why Malcolm voted for Reynold.

Pretty savvy game play by Andrea to switch the votes to Michael once she thought she was in trouble.

So was Philip’s speech at TC purposely designed to root out the hidden immunity idols? Or was he just shooting his mouth off as usual? I think Reynold was going to play his idol in any event, but Philip’s warnings definitely spooked Malcolm.

What’s going to be really funny is at the next tribal council when Malcom uses his hidden idol to protect himself. Reynold is going to be pissed! (even though he was playing it anyway)

The big question is: Will the majority alliance now believe for sure that Malcolm doesn’t have an idol? If they cast all their votes for him, it could turn back and bite them. Hopefully they’ll take aim at Reynold since they know he’s played his.

What just happened? Man, Malcolm’s got some 'splainin to do back at camp. He said that “was supposed to be a throwaway vote,” so he must have intended to write Reynold’s name all along? What purpose would that serve? Good theory, notfrommensa; I hadn’t thought of that, but you may be right.

Too bad about Dawn. She just doesn’t have the emotional fortitude to play as aggressively as she’s been playing. Should’ve known she’d crack under the pressure.

If the other alliance had split their votes with, say, 4 votes for Reynold and 4 votes for Malcolm, then Malcolm’s vote for Reynold (instead of Andrea) could have made it 5-4, saving himself and sending Reynold home.

Awwwwwwww, poor Michael looked so helpless.

Cochran’s continuing to make a nice play for the “Viewer’s Choice” check if not the big check this season. Good for him.

Malcolm doesn’t want Stealth R Us to know that he’s not still with them so he had to vote the way they told him to. I don’t think he put the pieces together till the vote was in progress. He was probably about to play his own Idol when Reynold got up and he figured what the hell. His alliance is out why not burn Reynold with it. Had he been right about them voting for him Andrea would have gone home.

Eddy is too dumb for Andrea. I think her and Malcolm are a better match. But I don’t see Malcolm losing his focus on the game to pursue anything.

Love the looks on everyone’s faces during Philip’s monolog.

Malcolm has HUUUUUGE balls of steel. Get up and ask for the immunity idol from the guy whose name you just wrote down? (I mean, he probably still figured Andrea would get more votes, but still). Damn. Only way that could’ve been better was if Andrea hadn’t changed the plan and did vote for Malcolm.

Would’ve loved to see what had happened if Reynold said “no” - I suspect Malcolm would’ve played his own Idol and looked like a huge jerk, but eh.

Loved the conversations between Malcolm, Andrea, Dawn and Eddie. Can really see all the nuances, all the little bits they try to hold onto and not say… even Dawn talking to Andrea didn’t want to divulge that she saw Reynolds’ Idol, the most she ended up saying was “Malcolm doesn’t have it” and “I saw an Idol today.”

Looks like next episode Dawn has another patented meltdown. I suppose it’s unfair to judge people actually playing the show when I haven’t done so myself, but it just kinda garners eye rolling at this point.

Ah, right. Thanks, that makes sense.

And agreed that it takes huge balls of steel to ask for an idol from a guy whose name you just wrote down. Too funny.

The favorites are 7 strong (Phillip, Andrea, Dawn, Cochran, Brenda, Erik, and non-fave Sherri) Malcolm has just been ousted by exposing (they already knew, but now it’s public) his alliance. Eddie and Reynold just don’t have the power to break that alliance up. So, I think we have 2 boring weeks in front of us before it picks back up.

Malcolm still has his idol, so it could shake things up.

Did Brenda not talk again in this episode, even after winning immunity? Severe weather in the area knocked out my satellite last night for about 10-12 minutes so I didn’t get much of the post immunity scrambling. It did come back on for Tribal Council though.

I usually delete shows from the DVR queue right after I watch them, but I left this one in there so I could go back and take another look at how that all went down.

I’m sure there’ll be some thoughts from Malcolm next week. If he thought they were all writing his name down, I guess he figured they didn’t really include him in the Stealth R Us alliance and he had nothing to lose by going to his strong guy alliance for help. He might even be able to spin it as “hey, I not only voted the way you told me*, but got the HII out of play in the process”. That nobody else voted that way has to raise some flags.

Next week, I wish they’d let it be known that Malcolm is the vote and force Malcolm into using his HII while Reynold is still around. That’d be a tribal council worth watching.
One thing’s for certain, I’d never be worth a flip at Survivor.

*That’s something I missed while watching, Glazer mentioned this above.

Nope. She continues her run as most silent Favorite ever.

Duke of Rat, I would also totally suck at this game. The only strategy I was capable of figuring out about the Malcolm move was that his defense would be “that particular HII was getting played anyway, and since it turned out neither of us needed it, it doesn’t matter which of us ‘wasted’ it.”

And of course that bit of thinking is completely irrelevant. Oh well.
