Like I said- it was a worrying trend. But now she is gone. Yeah, if Emily had voted J round one, it’d be over then & there.
Is this the first shot-in-the-dark that came up “safe”?
It was pretty incredible.
I think it might have been. UPDATE: nope. https://ew.com/tv/recaps/survivor-45-r
Survivor first introduced the Shot in the Dark twist — which enabled a player to sacrifice their vote for a one-in-six chance in safety — in season 41. And since then, bupkis. Sydney. Zach. Mayra. Swati. Tori. Sami. Matthew. Claire. They all played it and all got the dreaded “Not Safe” scroll. Jami played it and actually got “Safe”… but she didn’t need it as she wasn’t getting voted out anyway. But this week on Survivor 45 , for the first time in franchise history, a player who was going to be voted out of the game — unanimously, it turns out — played the Shot in the Dark and was saved.
Yeah, what are the odds?

mmm
Somewhat interesting episode (I found the challenge pretty bad, with one team clearly outgunning the other), with a very interesting TC.
Kaleb is almost certainly a dead man walking. If you are going to play your SITD, I’m not sure why blowing up at Dee and Julie is helpful at all. You are going to need to mend those bridges. Unless it was to plant a seed for next week where he works with the former Belo folks to try to whittle Reba down some more. His only hope is to be a floating vote while the big blocs go at each other… but I think they will likely all see that threat and just vote him out once they get the chance.
I can’t decide if Emily made a mistake or not in voting for Kaleb (I mean, it worked, so it clearly wasn’t a mistake, but it seems like an unnecessary risk). I think that if you know your name is a possibility it’s probably worth the heat to throw a random vote at J just in case Kaleb has a trick up his sleeve (or succeeds on a SITD).
I’m actually really surprised that the majority, after apparently unanimously agreeing on Kaleb with near-unanimity on J as a backup, didn’t split the vote just in case there was a SITD or idol played. Seems very short-sighted. What if he had an idol? You’re just going to let Kaleb (or any one random defector if it’s a SITD) pick who goes home? Pretty dumb, IMO.
I thought it was a great episode in what has so far been a lackluster season. Emily’s vote made sense to me, she did what she could for Caleb, but went along with the group to keep her head down.
And yeah, Caleb has a huge target on him, his best chance is to win immunity or get an advantage and hope other cracks emerge. He seemed to genuinely piss off D when he was talking before the vote.
Agreed about it being lackluster and this being a good episode. Even the challenge was especially good.
I don’t think so. Kaleb is at his absolute weakest right now. Everyone voted against him, he burnt his SITD, and he showed he didn’t have any sort of other advantage. That means he’s no longer a threat, and players will want to use him. Belo and Reba are at equal numbers so I think they’re going to start going after each other.
Out of the first five episodes, we had two quits and one contestant who just had no skill in the game, not social, or physical. Sometimes, seasons with slow starts can get good after the merge when the real gamers show up.
That’s my hope. I find Sifu annoying right now, but I found Yam Yam annoying as could be to start and found him quite fun by the end.
Survivor has the SNL problem. Everyone remembers the great characters and forgets the duds that never even make it to the merge. Then at the start of each season they go “man, there sure are a bunch of duds in this cast.”
I guess. I’ve had seasons where I thought “this is fun” within a couple episodes.
If he had an idol, he wouldnt have played his Shot in the Dark.
Is there any reason he can’t do both? If the SITD doesn’t work can’t he still hand in an idol? (If he’d had one, obvs.)
When Jeff asks , then that is the last time.
Could be. It is a 5/5/2 split right now, so just about anything could happen. But if Emily is truly locked in with the Reba crew, then that makes it effectively 6/5/1. Either the Reba folks bring in Kaleb to secure their vote or they decide they can afford to jettison him (since Belo seemed more keen on getting him out then one of the Rebas, oddly) and keep a 6/5 advantage.
ETA: I suppose he could try to join Belo to force a tie, but those are the folks that seem most eager to get him out.
Right, but if he had an idol then whomever he voted for would go home. We have no idea who that would have been, but neither do they. It just seems obvious to me that when you have a 12-1 vote advantage you might as well throw a vote or two on other folks just to protect yourself from blowback. Surely J is wishing she did that now…
Actually it’s pretty amazing how J sabotaged her game. She was voted out largely because members of her own original tribe wanted her out. Sifu because she lied about voting for him, which is a pretty stupid thing to do, unless you just really want to make an enemy. And Austin because she denied him a sandwich - which while rather petty was also quite obvious at the time. Why she sided with Kellie (not a member of her tribe) against Austin (who in theory is on her side) for a very weak advantage, and one which only gets stronger if she gets voted out, is a mystery.
Not just petty – incredibly petty. Seriously dude? You’re basing your game play on a freakin’ sandwich?
They didn’t know that beforehand. I agree it was stupid to vote unanimous (though it made great TV). What if Emily had voted for someone else?
That’s not unusual, we often see and hear players going along with the group so as not paint yourself as an outsider if you are reasonably sure your guy is going home anyway. If she had voted for someone else, that would have been something.
I doubt this is true. My wife and often comment about how someone gets a landslide of votes, plays an idol (saved) and then next tribal get’s no votes. I’m betting it goes something like this next week.
My guess is that half of the people that voted for Kaleb, did so out of Bruce’s bullying. There sure was a lot of happy cheering and rejoicing from the tribe (save K) for someone they ‘wanted’ out.
I’m hoping for a Kaleb/Bruce rivalry to develop - to see who’s really the most dangerous.
It wasnt just the sandwich, the choice was for a stupid and suicidal reward- which rewarded those who found a way to vote the other two out (which they did).
'Survivor 45' recap: It's a trap! Survivor 45 recap: It’s a trap!
One player knows better, but two others trick themselves into accepting the worst advantage ever…But this week’s episode was a stellar one for Austin. Not only did it appear that he was the person that Emily trusted more than Drew — sealing the deal to keep her from flipping to team Belo — but he was the only one on the journey this week who recognized the folly in going for the amulets over the food. Because in the immortal words of Admiral Ackbar… it’s a trap!..If they chose the jewelry, the three amulets (which had to played together) would give them — as a group — one extra vote. If there were only two amulets still in the game, it would become a steal-a-vote. If there was only one person with an amulet left, it became a full idol. I think I can pretty safely say that this is the worst advantage ever. Because all holding it does is incentivize people to get rid of you. As Austin correctly surmised, “This is not a symbol of an alliance, this is absolutely a symbol of war.”
All obtaining this amulet does is paint a bigger target on your back and make the other players want to get rid of you. What kind of advantage is that? And, as Austin also astutely pointed out, what are the odds that the three people would even be able to all agree on the same person to use the one measly extra vote against? I actually crunched the numbers with the EW analytics team on this and it turns out the percentage chance of that happening is… ZERO! ZERO PERCENT!!!
J Maya and Kellie accepting this advantage was the height of folly.
So, its wasnt just the sandwich. It was forcing him into a foolish choice.
I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet. I just watched the three previous episodes over the last couple days trying to catch up.
In terms of that sandwich, Austin is the only one who didn’t get to eat. Both of the women had fish waiting back at camp thanks to the reward part of that challenge. He was the one who actually needed that sandwich. I would be just as pissed and petty as he was.
