Survivor Finale - 15/05/2005 - West Coast Edition (UNBOXED SPOILERS)

That brought tears to my eyes.

Could they have put more commercials into the reunion?

Geez, me too. I loved it.

Did anyone else notice that Ian/Katie/Tom didn’t speak to one another?

Ian made a joke about playing against someone almost three times his age, and Tom laughed. I think they’re all still friends.

My thoughts exactly. We’re less than 5 minutes away from the winner being announced on the left coast, and we have spoiler warnings in the title, so I’m thinking it should be okay to discuss freely.

Ian is a complete dope, but he gained a bunch of respect from me. And not just by being magnanimous, but by being able to balance on that bo… bou… (?) pole for 11 hours. Wow!

The Tominator really is an iron bar; you just can’t beat him at an immunity challenge. After the first “leg” of the first IC, I was thinking “Bullshit! Tom already won. Why does he have to stop and wait for #2? Unfair!”

Then, of course, he won the second leg head to head against the biggest threat. Tom simply cannot be beaten, unless the challenge has anything to do with aiming anything. I hope he isn’t the guy who aims the firehoses back at the station.

I disagree with this being so precedent-setting. Wasn’t Ethan a nice guy who won the million? Still, Tom’s integrity throughout was pretty solid. Maybe a little frayed around the edges, but he was predominantly a stand-up guy from start to finish in the game.

How ironic that Katie was the only reason Ian made it to the final three.

Well, I was surprised a couple of times.

In the Final Four IC I thought that Ian had blown it horribly. He really is too honest, and he tripped over his words. I’m not totally surprised that Katie voted to keep Ian (by voting for Jenn), but I thought she might have sensed the direction of the wind and sacrificed Ian. I was surprised it went to a tie-breaker. How cool is it that Tom was unable to vote him out?

The other surprise was the final IC. Ten points to Ian for his sacrifice. But minus several million points for strategy and logic! How old is he, anyway? He gave up a chance at a million bucks. For what? Honour? Fine in the real world, but it’s a game. And it’s a game where people expect you to stab them in the back. What’s Katie to him, anyway? If he was going to jump, he should have taken Tom up on his offer. And then Tom says, ‘I was ready to fall off.’ :smack: D’oh! The Final Two should have been Tom and Ian, but Ian bailed for a pretty poor reason.

Am I allowed to ask a question about the winner, or do I need to wait a bit longer? (I know who won - I just don’t want to spoil it for anyone else.)

It’s already been spoiled. (Sorry, Hawaiians!)

Great.

So, the final episode is the only one of the entire season that I watched - so for you regular viewers - did Tom deserve to win?

It seems like Katie was sort of useless, so from what I saw, he seemed like the clear winner, but perhaps some of you folks disagree?

(I’m speaking only of the final two - I don’t know any of the other players so have no opinion on their game play.)

I think Tom deserved to win. Obviously, he and Katie outlasted everyone else. Tom also outplayed everyone else. Did he outwit everyone? Hm. I didn’t get the impression that he was weasling. He seemed to be fairly upright. Sure, he schemed; but I think he tried to play a fairly clean game. So if trying to be an upstanding person is outwitting, and trying not to screw people (unless, as he did, he felt that he was about to be stabbed), then there it is. Purely from being a dominant physical force, he deserved to win.

I’m not a girl, and I’m not gay; but I would not have been unhappy if Ian had won. He seems a genuinely nice guy, and we nice guys have to stick together. He’s young and has lots of time to try to make a million dollars. Not to mention that he’ll have a couple million women after him, he has his dolphins, and he has a brand-new, red Corvette convertible.

I don’t think I ever got onto the Katie Hate-Wagon. A lot of the comments in the previous threads were by women drooling over Dolphin Boy. I don’t think she outplayed anyone. She did switch sides a couple of times. But what it comes down to is this: Whether you think she played her strategy well, or if she really had a strategy at all, she did end up sitting next to Tom in the Final Two. In that sense, maybe she did outplay the others.

Incidentally, Angie is still cute!

Well, I didn’t predict the Ian Goof-out, but otherwise it happened as predicted. Not that it was difficult to predict.

What is up with Ian? He seems to have an integrity-meter measured in dramatic suicide acts, rather than everyday actions. If he lies or manipulates someone, he needs to atone for this act by symbolically committing suicide. Last week he offered to Katie to “step aside”, i.e. quit the game. This week, he decides to do hari-kari for Tom after a very similar offense. Do we need to buy this guy a seppuku sword?

Shorter Ian: if you don’t want to bear the burden of being a liar, don’t lie. Easy peasy japanesey.

Overall: Tom deserved to win. Katie was a faint also-ran. The jury was far to hard on her, but she didn’t deserve it.

PS - Coby: loved your mumu in the first tribal council. Your    were quite worn out at least a week ago.

Is it just me or did Katie have a nose job during the break?

I was kind of hoping Ian would win, but he would’ve probably given it away to someone he accidently offended, by stealing their parking space or something.

Was Coby the only vote for Katie? Ian voted for Tom?

Okay, observations:

[li]Ian, WTF!!! I get it that he’s a really nice guy, but jeez, after 38 days and lasting 11 hours and 50 minutes in that challenge, he should’ve given himself a chance to win. He played too hard to not even get the runner up money. Shame on Tom, my wife and I were hoping that after Ian jumped off, Tom would say to him “Just the fact that you were willing to sacrifice your shot at the money means a lot to me, but I can’t let you do it” and vote off Katie.[/li][li]More on Tom. I think he’s a decent guy, but he was playing up the holier than thou angle too much and I really didn’t care for the way he tried to bully Katie last week. His comment tonight after Ian threw the final IC “You already had my friendship after the game, but now you have my respect” made no sense to me. Who counts among his friends people he can’t respect?[/li][li]I felt bad for Katie. She really didn[/li][li] Katie really didn’t deserve the attacks she got, especially from Greg. I felt sorry for her when he made her cry by calling her “pathetic.” While I don’t care for the way she got to the final two, she was right when she said that because she’s not athletically gifted, she had to align herself with strong players. Tina Wesson rode Colby Donaldson to a million bucks and no one ever called her on it. Totally unfair.[/li][li]Coby naming his baby girl after Janu was one of the sweetest, most poignant moments in Survivor history.[/li][li]Angie. OMFG. She was a goth goddess tonight! I thought she was cute as a punk kinda girl on the island, but tonight she looked unbelievable.[/li][li]LOL at Jolanda still not understanding that she was voted off because you can’t be pushy and bossy on Survivor, especially at the beginning.[/li][li]The next Survivor contestants will live among Mayan ruins! I’m so jealous!!![/li][/ul]

Watching Ian try to play the game (and fail miserably) was so sad it was funny.

I actually laughed out loud when he voluntarily told Tom it would have been “a hard decision” whether or not to vote him out. That has to be the stupidest thing any surivivor has ever said.

It was like a cartoon.

“Oh no… is he standing right behind me?”

“No. I’m right in front of you. I’m the one you’re talking to.”
As for the final challenge, what he should have done after the 11 hours was tell Tom that if Tom dropped first he would bring him along to the final. This is where his inability to lie would be an advantage - as long as he was telling the truth, Tom would know he was telling the truth, and make the deal.
Best of all, by making good on his word and bring Tom to the finals with him, even though it reduced his chances of winning, he would get his respect back.
Ah well…

I turned it off right before the ‘reunion’ show. Are Jenn & greg still ‘together’? I wish she would have won.

Katie really choked in the finals, I didn’t notice it all season-long but she really pissed off a lot of people. She conceded two votes at least.

While FarmMan is seething over Tom’s disingenuous claptrap, I’m very pleased with the way it shook out. The thing with Tom is that he actually believes his own horseshit, and while that doesn’t make me want to befriend him in real life, it makes him the worthy sole survivor IMO.

But I’m pretty sure his respect ain’t worth no million bucks!
