Survivor: May 13, 2010

I’m watching my first episode in HD (just found the HD versions of our local channels). So very pretty.

Anyways, on with the discussions.

This week on… Survivor:

Did the producers let the contestants shower before the reunion hugs? I don’t see how else the sappy family scenes could have happened without anyone recoiling from the smell.

Hello,

I just recently registered and I’m trying to understand how this board is organized. Is this really the best forum for posting threads about TVs and Movies?

I ask because it seems to me that most boards would have a specific forum for popular TV Shows or Movies or Mini series.

If anyone can explain how things work here or point me to some kind of “Help” document that explains where and how I should post threads about TV shows and Mini Series, I would very much appreciate that.

Thank you.

Cafe Society is the catch-all forum for all entertainment or hobby discussions, outside of simple question and answer stuff. If you have a question about what a particular plant you found in your yard is, General Questions is the proper forum. If you want to discuss television shows, movies, cooking, music, etc, Cafe Society is the proper forum. If you want to talk about games, or play (word, trivia, mafia, werewolf) games, the Game Room is the proper forum.

In other words:

“How is the US Congress organized?” - General Questions
“Is the current organization of the US Congress the most efficient?” - Great Debates
Congress! on Bravo - May 12, 2010” - Cafe Society
“Let’s play ‘Run For Congress’!” - The Game Room
“How do you rate your congressman?” - IMHO
“I met my congressman today!” - MPSIMS
“My congressman is such a putz!” - The BBQ Pit

Rupert was played, y’all. I love Sandra.

I was impressed by Sandra again. It would have been very understandable if she had tried to go after Russell, but she knew it was more important to be sure there were no Heroes left for the final three.

Now that Russell has directly broken his word to Colby/Rupert, is there ANYONE left who would toss him a vote in the finale?

Technically, Rupert doesn’t know that. He only saw three votes.

did you not see the stare down Rupert gave to Russell before he left for loser’s lounge(Ponderosa)?

Russell playing to get to the final three by burning all the people in the jury is a sure fire way to NOT win the million prize.

I wonder if Russell will beg whoever does win this season to give him the title “Sole Survivor” like he did his last season?

I hope he does, just so we can see him almost cry and squirm and pout and seethe in rage while at the reunion show.

My grudging respect for Parvati grows after her immunity challenge performance.

And I don’t think I have ever seen a control freak quite as intensely controlling as Russell.

Man, Rupert, what a big doof. He’s had his detractors before, but I’m finally seeing why they dislike him. He makes the mistake everyone else has of trusting Russell, he annoys everyone by staying up all night chopping wood, betrays a potential ally (Sandra) and tries to vote for her… silly. But the dumbest move is how he kept switching between his “I’m a hero and will play honorably!” and “the purpose of the game is to win, gotta vote out even your allies to get to the top”. Obviously a bit of that at Tribal was aimed at stirring the villains up, but I still think he kept going between the two extremes too often, making it hard to take him seriously.

I’m really glad Sandra played the idol, I was worried she wasn’t going to after her comment in camp… there is NO REASON to not play it! Even if you don’t need it, it’s still good to play it 1) just in case and 2) it looks good to the jury, showing that you’re in the game. I suppose there’s the “putting the target on my back” problem, but this late in the game, that’s relatively minor… Colby’s a sacrificial lamb, Jerri’s been out of it but even she’s starting to get into the game, and Russell and Parv are obviously big guns.

At this point I think everyone is keeping Russell around because they know he can’t win.

Re: the immunity challenge, I dunno. It seems like it should be the sort of thing you can stay in it for hours, but people were falling left and right. I wonder how those poles are designed.

Thanks very much JayJay. I surely do appreciate your response.

I think Russell has become increasingly inept over the course of these two seasons. Most people learn from their mistakes and gain wisdom as they age. But not this guy. He just seems to keep getting more and more inept all the time.

I don’t think we will be hearing very much from him at the finale. I think his level of fame is spiralling out of existance and I doubt we will be hearing very much from him again. Except perhaps for the final disposition of his criminal charges.

For any of you who haven’t heard, Russel was arrested for beating on someone in a public place a few weeks ago. It didn’t seem like very much of a spectacle to me. But if you are interested, you can probably Google him and find out the details of his latest debacle.

somebody linked the story in an earlier Survivor thread.

I have to say I like having people like Russell in Survivor because they make the show more interesting. But you have to wonder wtf is going in his head to make him pull the moves he does AND think he has a remote chance of winning the whole thing.

Um…from what I gleaned, Russell pushed an 18yro girl to the ground and she suffered “minor injuries.” He cooperated with police and was later released. Hardly what I’d call “beating someone in public,” but certainly not a handshake either.

That said, I agree with what Probst said in last week’s blog: playing back-to-back seasons is starting to wear on Russell. His game lacks finesse, and he’s sloppier. He also seems to be on the verge of bringing the obsessive crazies. I still think he’s an amazing mastermind, but he has an ever-diminishing chance of actually winning this thing.

I seriously doubt this is the last we’ll be seeing of him, at least, not for a few more seasons. Geez, it’s been how many years and only now is that nasty Johnny Fairplay stench finally lifting. Now, if someone would either punch or slap Parvari’s toothy grin off her face, I’d be much obliged.

I think I’m on team Sandra.

Meanwhile, WTF Colby? Bitching out your brother on national TV? How the hell is he the last hero standing?

Colby goes out early in a challenge yet again. I am starting to believe he really is throwing these challenges on purpose, so as not to be seen as a threat. He has survived a lot longer than I thought he would.

I knew early in the episode Rupert would be going home when they showed him in confessional talking about how close he is to winning.

With five left, including four villains and one hero, the next Tribal Council should be really interesting:
Do they vote out the well-liked hero Colby, who they fear the jury would give the million to? If they do vote Colby out in fifth place, which villain ends up in fourth place?

I think they are all thinking they can win against Russell, so he’s probably safe for the final three.
**Parvati **has played a strong game and has friends on the jury, so I could see Russell (and Sandra) wanting to get rid of her next after Colby. Sandra, though, might want another previous winner in the final TC with her.
Jerri is sitting pretty to get to the final three, because she’s not a threat to anybody. She hasn’t initiated any big moves and may be seen as a coattail rider by the jury. I can’t see her winning now unless it were a final two with her and Russell, and everyone votes for not-Russell.
Sandra’s position is questionable. Parvati might want to keep her for the “previous winner” factor. Russell is probably still pissed at her and may want to take her out just because she defied him.

On the other hand, the villains may realize that two villains plus Colby (and an immunity necklace) could guarantee themselves the final three. Colby is now a swing vote and that may keep him around into the final four.

In fact, the best bet at this point for either one of the strong players (Parvati, Russell, or Sandra) may be to take Colby and Jerri into the final TC. Neither of them made any bold moves this season, so the strong player could argue that at least he/she had played hard and “earned” the prize.

Sunday night’s finale should be exciting! And the reunion show should be especially fun!

True Dat!

Almost every single epi, I hear Russell making broad sweeping generalizations intimating the jury would never vote for someone to win over him or that there is no way that events would ever go against Russell. Meanwhile the audience knows that the jury would never give Russell their votes and that things will almost certainly go against him.

He just doesn’t understand how or why juries vote the way they do. In other words, Russell is just one big dumbass! It’s very difficult to understand why he fails to understand his behavior is such that the jury will never vote for him. I think the reason is that he plays this game according to his nature and he just cannot escape his nature. As a result, he can never win.

The same is true for Sandra. But in reverse. She can never lose this game. I know that many people here will become very angry with me when I describe Sandra’s game as “say nothing”, “do nothing” and “be nothing”. But that is how I see her personality. She just sits back and does nothing. And that is the certain forumula for winning this game. By saying nothing and doing nothing, no one will ever get angry with her. No one will ever threaten her and no one will ever vote against her.

I’m guessing most people will really dislike my saying this. But Sandra is the perfect Survivor contestant. I can’t imagine her ever losing a season of this game. By the same token, I can’t stand her. Watching her play, IMO, is like watching paint dry. It is torture.

I’m betting that from now on, we will see almost everyone play the game just like Sandra does - and that means that from now on, we will see the most boring seasons imaginable.

I apologize for offending so many of you - as I am certain that is what I’m doing when I say that I absolutely hate Sandra because she is so dull and boring. But, I believe that from here on in, we will be getting nothing but Sandra clones as people figure out that her personality is the surefire all time Survivor champion.

Russell’s seasons were filmed back-to-back–he had no idea what the outcome was of the first one (except that he made it to the final 3) before embarking on the next one. As such, he was provided with no negative feedback from the game, and thus doesn’t realize he’s making mistakes.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that I loved Rupert’s very direct message to Sandra during the votes: “I voted you too.”

Go Parvati!

If she makes it to the end she wins it for sure. The only question is whether or not anyone can beat her in an immunity challenge. Right now she is a prohibitive favorite in challenges against Russell, Sandra and Jerri. If Colby really is sandbagging he could give her a run for her money, but if not she’s got it in the bag.

No way does Sandra have any argument to win against Parvati. Out of everyone left only Russell could make a compelling argument, but he won’t get the votes.

My biases are to favor challenge monsters, people with social skills, and hot chicks. Parvati really hits that sweet spot nicely.
