Survivor Season 35: Heroes, Healers and Hustlers

Another relatively ho-hum episode where they need to focus on someone else being ‘in trouble’ to try and make an obvious boot not obvious. Simone didn’t seem to jibe with anyone in her tribe and once she failed at the puzzle she was gone.

I may well be forgetting someone, but it seems like Survivor has had trouble casting (east) Asian women over the years. They all seem to fall into the ‘awkward outcast’ (like Christina from Colton’s first season) or ‘dragon lady’ (Lucy from MvX) stereotypes. Maybe Mari from MvX (though even she seemed to be a bit of an outcast on her group).

Eh, looking like it’ll be Alan in the crosshairs. Seems like his antics did push people the wrong way after all.

Interestingly enough, it’s the cowboy who in his bio said one of the Survivors he’s most like is Russell Hantz.

Joe is totally discount Tony.

Yeah, that was not much of episode. It was plain as day that what’s-her-name was going to get the boot. Survivor, though, is often not that much fun until after the merge, so I would’t be surprised if we’re in for a bit of a dry spell.

The first few episodes are always kind of bland and last night was no exception.

I have a question that I have yet to find an answer for after watching every season of Survivor. Maybe this has been discussed here years ago if so I apologize.

Why are so many of the contestants dressed in office apparel? Are they surprised at work one day and are told that they have to leave for the show immediately? Last night it looked like Simone was wearing fashion boots! I’ve seen women in skirts and men in suits many times.

I suspect part of the reason is because the producers want variety. You’ll note that the contestants frequently dress in the colors of their tribe.

But also I watched an interview with a past contestant and they claimed they were told to dress for a photo shoot only to be whisked straight to the boat instead.

The choice of clothing to go stay on an island, for what you hope is going to be 39 days has puzzled me for years. Did some contestants not even have time to run home from work, say goodbye to the kids, shower and change? It also seems to me, anyway, they don’t seem to lose weight like the players in earlier seasons. I can remember watching reunion shows and being floored by the change in appearances or just not recognizing some people.

I think it was Survivor: Africa where the producers discovered that watching a group of malnourished idiots lie around all day whining wasn’t exactly compelling television. It seems like now they always make sure there’s enough rice, eggs or other food available so the players have enough energy to at least move around so they can scheme in private groups.

While the 6v6v6 seasons seem to be among the more entertaining ones in my memory, I think they are slower in the first few episodes. Boots seem more obviously because it’s more likely one person will be on the outs in a tribe of 6, as opposed to a tribe of 9 or 10 where there’s more cracks and more chances to swing others to save you.

Notice that even though the reward for this challenge was fishing equipment, they all have spears and masks already. In earlier seasons, whoever won the fishing spear would be in much better shape.

Felt like a long Tribal with not much happening. Though I admit a bit of surprise at the outcome. After the challenge I figured it’d be Patrick going home given how he bogarted the throwing portion, but what they showed of the discussions made me think they might axe Lauren instead. To be frank I think Patrick was the right choice, no sense in “keeping the tribe strong for challenges” with the (extremely predictable) tribe swap coming up soon. And boy, he was bitter when got voted out…

I’d love to see the Healers women take control and vote out Discount Tony with an Idol in his pocket, but they might not get the chance now with the swap.

Yeah, when you piss all over your Tribe mates for voting you out, it generally makes you look worse. What an ass. Patrick had no business on the show in the first place.

In other [del]gossip[/del] news, Former Survivor player Kat “Even Tarzan beat me” Edorsson was arrested a couple weeks ago for beating up her boyfriend.

It wasn’t her Blood vs Water boyfriend (former Big Brother Winner Hayden Moss). Maybe Haydon did dump her after she could even make the merge.

Touche

That’s standard trick-fuck 101 for Survivor. 90% of the time the scuttlebutt you hear will not be what goes down at tribal. And half of what you hear at tribal is disguised so as to hide the blindside.

Yes and that entitled attitude is what got him voted out. More than bitter though, I thought I saw hate in his eyes - anger at least. Completely and socially unfit for the game.

After the stunned disbelief. How could they possibly vote ME out? Everybody LOVES ME, I’m the life of the party!

Talk about a disconnect between how you see yourself and how others perceive you…

I just rewatched the last episode. The irony is that in his exit interview he said that he hopes none of his tribemates win because they lied to him (devastating!). This from the guy who earlier had waded out into the water to reassure Lauren that she wasn’t going home - even though he was sure she would.

It’s ok for ME to lie… but not you guys!

I have to wonder how some of these guys play poker (or think how it should be played).

Horrible attitude! SOMEONE is going home at Tribal, and it can ALWAYS be you. I wasn’t (totally) sorry to see him go. At least the consolation is that there’s at least one male player with a great ass and tight swimtrunks on every tribe…

New blue tribe lost both challenges. Just shows how strength only gets you so far - it might get that box down the challenge quicker but can’t help you toss a ring, unlock locks or solve a puzzle. Pretty good tribal, though with these secret (dis)advantages being given to people from other teams, it can feel a little chaotic at times. Alan certainly felt screwed. I kinda hope Devon and Ashley pull Desi to them to vote against Joe if they go back.

Joe found a clue to the at the “Yellow” Beach for the HII which he found 5’ from the well (w/ Help from Cole). He should be digging 5’ from the Blue Beach well.

And Cole should be digging 5’ from the Red Beach Well because he knows where Joe found the idol on the Yellow beach. (and he should keep his mouth shut)

After Devon’s vote was blocked, it didn’t matter who if Joe played the idol for him, or Desi. Neither were going home. If Alan/Ashley had voted for Desi instead of Joe, the vote would have been deadlocked 2-2. Assuming no change in votes, the re-vote would have been 1-1. They go to rocks, and Alan, Desi, and Joe don’t have to pull rocks. So either Ashley or Devon go home.

Not sure if she would have realized it, but in that situation, Ashley should have voted for Joe on the re-vote so she wasn’t vulnerable to the rock draw. Joe/Desi are still safe.

It’s still early, and I don’t expect much from Survivor at this point in the game, but I really wish they had merged into 2 tribes instead of keeping 3. The tribes are too small. I won’t be missing Allen, but I give him props for going out with dignity, as opposed to that guy last week.

Word to the wise: Joe has got to go!

Is Cole capable of keeping his mouth shut? On the evidence, I don’t think so.

And can anyone explain why he thought telling BOTH the ‘opposition’ about the Hidden Advantage would earn him any brownie points with anyone??

Did anyone tell Mike about the Hidden Advantage? I don’t remember it, but I had to answer a phone call for a minute and maybe missed it. Weird that he might have been the only one kept out of the loop.

Actually, there were a lot of things about that episode that baffled me. Like Alan insisting on keeping throwing and throwing and throwing. Excuse me? Your team just saw how well insisting on being ‘the hero’ worked out for Patrick, right?

And why did Jessica, a former Healer, choose to block Devon’s vote? Presumably the best play for Jessica would be to try to protect the other former Healers, looking ahead to mergers/reshufflings. The Blue tribe was two Heroes, two Healers, and one Hustler, which most likely means you’d be looking at Healers vs. Heroes and Devon the tie breaker. Put the kibosh on either of the Heroes – they’re the ones who are almost certainly shooting for the Healers, when who knows for Devon?

(Does anyone else think Devon is thick as a brick?)

Oh, and as far as I’m concerned, both JP and Roark might as well be invisible.
