Ah, summertime. The kids are out of school, and that means the office becomes temporary day care. Planting your sprog in a conference room for the day is boring for them and inconvenient for your co-workers who have the room booked for a meeting.
Will someone please find the cafeteria manager and get them some better recipes? Today’s special was kung pao shrimp. Sounds nice, but in reality, it was tongue ow. There’s more to it than hoisin sauce and a lot of red pepper flake. I like hot and spicy, but this was just one-note ouch.
The idea of taking kids to the office totally boggles my mind. What are those parents thinking?? Is there no policy stating that offspring don’t belong in the workplace?? sheesh…
My mother occasionally had to take me to work. Of course, this wasn’t a problem at all when she worked for the Girl’s Club. They had a library and a computer room so I was in heaven. I’d spend my days either reading books or playing Oregon Trail until the other kids got there and then I’d do crafts or something.
When she worked for the hospital, I used to pick up the mail from the mail room and stuff envelopes or collate - whatever menial tasks they needed done. Worked out well for everyone. I think they especially liked that I cleaned the department fridge and washed dishes they left on the counter. When I wasn’t working, I’d find a quiet corner and do my homework or read a book.
In other words, I wasn’t a normal kid. I loved going to work with my mom.
Actually, she used to take me to work when she was in college too. She had work study in the Co-Op office and I did a lot of the same jobs there. For a bonus, her boss had an old manual typewriter (they were using word processessors) and she let me use it. She and my mom gave me brief lessons in proper typing and I became a very good typist before I was 9. When she was in class, I’d either hang out with the school’s spiritual advisor (Sister Helen - a truly wonderful woman) or I’d sit in on her classes. If they were fun classes (like sciences), I’d pay attention and learn something. If they were boring (everything else) I’d quietly read a book. I especially loved when she had bio lab because the class had jars and jars of body parts lining the room. I loved to take down the brain jar and look at every nook and crannie through the glass. Even then, I was amazed at how accepting everyone was when she had to bring me.
Pain is back under control. Sitting is the problem. Definitely. Tuesday is my 8 hour day and I’m usually up and down between working the desk and doing busy work like cleaning when we’re slow. But, yesterday was different because I’m working on a project that keeps me sitting at my desk most of the day. I have come to the conclusion that I need to stand up/walk around for at least 5 minutes out of every 30 or my hip will seize up on me.
I spent last night stretched out while we watched Jonathan Creek and then made sure I didn’t curl up while sleeping. Now the pain is back to acceptable levels.
So, swim as much as possible, use the hot tub, and get up and walk every 25 minutes. I think I can handle that.
It’s hot and muggy in the house but I have the A/C going in the bedroom. It’s a Lord of the Rings day for me.
**congo **- you were truly an atypical kid. I always hated “Take your kid to work day” because for the most part, the kids didn’t care about what their parents did - they were generally looking for attention from a whole new batch of people. When I was a teen, I went to work in my dad’s office - even as an employee getting paid, it was often boring! It would have been death when I was a kid. Of course, back in the olden days, we mostly had SAHM so it wasn’t an issue.
I just made a convenience center run. With the seats down in my little Scion, I fit 3 bags of recycling, several flattened boxes, 2 trash cans with lids (they were cradled on the recycling bags because they were too tall to stand upright) and a small bucket of cat box detritus. I couldn’t possibly have fit anything else in there, but the trash in the basement can wait till next time.
The bed is stripped and some laundry is downstairs. I need to haul the other 2 baskets down and sort everything. Early tomorrow, I’ll get a couple of loads done and out on the lines. All that remains to be done today are vacuuming all the rooms and tidying the kitchen.
Oh, and in a fit of boredom last night, I was going thru Netflix, looking at the recent additions to their library, and I came across (spoilered because it might be NSFW) this.It was exactly as advertised and I watched about 20 minutes before getting bored. I don’t think I was the target demographic…
Still no work laptop. We booted it up and the motherboard failed. It should be here tomorrow morning and the Dell tech change it out tomorrow afternoon. Le sigh
1week unplanned shutdown and my to do list is out of control.
Hoooooomid here today. There is a possibility of storms tonight so hopefully it might clear the air a little.

Apparently not. I guess it’s handled by each line of business. Nobody in my group has children younger than college age, so I have no particular knowledge of how it works. I’d wager that the tellers can’t park their kids at the bank, but we have no physical customer contact here, so who’s to know if kids are there, so long as they’re quiet?
I remember as a kid going into Chicago with my mother to visit stockbrokers, attorneys or whatever, and finding it quite boring to be told to just sit somewhere for an hour.
We have two auditoriums here. Maybe someone should start running kid-friendly movies?
My storage unit was one of 70 broken into last night. Had to go look for inventory purposes, and so far I’m only out a padlock. I’m pissed above and beyond the call of duty right now.
Lucky we decided to put the crap there instead of the good stuff.:mad::mad: I offered the management the use of my 12 gauge.
Howdy Y’all! Home from irk and dindin is heatin’ up. Chikin 'n rice, broccoli and steamed carrots. I made the chikin 'n rice last night so all I have to do is heat it up and steam broccoli and carrots. Easy dindin. Plus, it’s all homemade. Go Me!
I’ve never minded a kid at irk so long as said kid stays with the parent. If ever I am asked to watch said kid the answer is no. Babysitter has never been a part of any of my job descriptions. Heh. I’m probably goin’ to be branded a troublemaker at church over kids. The Vestry is currently workin’ on revisin’ the instructions for ushers and I have stated emphatically that, while I am in favor of checkin’ the nursery to make sure everything is ok, ushers should not be responsible for herdin’ kids who might be in the kitchen, outside or wherever. If the kid is not in kiddie church or the nursery, then said kid should be with his/her parent. THEY are the ones responsible. Seriously. The ushers are there to attend church and even though there are certain duties, should be able to be in the service as much as possible.
Ok gotta go check on dindin. Also I shall head over to the church house for Evenin’ Prayer in a while.
Here’s where I mention I got my first power bill yesterday. 11 days on it cost me $29. I note this because it will be the smallest power bill I ever get.
Come to Hippy Hollow, Rosie. We don’t have humidity. We have Mountain Muggy.
Okay I am seriously about to throw down on this stupid HP wireless keyboard. I’m heading to Walmart tomorrow to get a decent *Logitech *combo. The one I had before because it was awesome before Culinary Boy wore out the mouse with Team Fortress 2.
I would love to sleep outside…if only it weren’t so hot and humid.
But we have lots and lots of fireflies this year, so there’s that. Yay!
Work has been crazy… Lots to do and not enough time to do it in. And so many things I want to do at home…but not quite enough energy for all of it. Eventually, I suppose I’ll get to things.
And we’re in for another hot, humid, icky day. The most I intend to do outside is hanging my laundry. Except for late today when the kid and I have to move the boat.
I’m caffeinating, clad in a robe, wondering why I’m up already, especially when my sweetie is in Rochester, NY. Oh yeah, the idiot cat was walking all over me. Stoopit cat. It’s such a burden being me…
Happy Thursday!!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 66 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of 92. Another hot and hyooomid day though the temp is actually stayin’ down a little for around heah.
I should have another day of just me at irk, which I like. I got a lot done yestiddy sans annoyances. Then again, I do tend to let the phone go to voicemail and do call backs when I want a little break from the mountains of end of year paperirk. What? Everyone knows we are not always in the office.
Now I must find more caffiene and must also needs feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas, irk purtification must commence.
Try a different chair. The superergonomic chair I had in The Swiss Job From Beyond Hell made my hip hurt for days; using one of the cheap plastic chairs we had for scaring visitors away solved the problem.
Do you also hate heat, rosie? Because if you do, you should avoid visiting Barcelona in September. It’s like the Everglades but in 3D and with pickpockets instead of gators.
First load of laundry is in the washer, and the sprinkler is watering the drier portion of the front lawn. After I hang the sheets out, I’ll be running the vacuum cleaner. And doing another load or 2 of laundry. Good times, good times…
'Tis that time of the year where VWife and I fight over the air conditioning. She likes to hang meat in the house and wreck my budget with exorbitant electric bills, where I like to walk around without a winter coat or sleep without covers.
