It seems to me that Taco flavored Doritos always come up when we have threads about foods that have disappeared that we wish would come back. After doing a search I see that it’s been some time. Regardless, it is of you dear dopers that I thought when I saw the display in the grocery store. I wanted to be the first to tell everyone “they’re baaaaaaack” and to stock up because they’re apparently “limited edition”. Pfffft. They’ve ruined them just as they ruined the original nacho flavor. Has anyone else been let down by this new incarnation, or for that matter, any other product that you wished would come back and when it did you wanted only to disappear it into the cornfield?
I haven’t tried their new Taco flavor. Are you sure it’s not their Late Nite Tacos at Midnight flavor though instead of regular taco flavor.
I had a similar problem awhile back. I really miss their jalapeno cheddar flavor, but then about a year or two ago noticed their Last Call Jalapeno Popper flavor and I bought a bag thinking it was going to be similar. It wasn’t. They had too much of a cream cheese flavor instead of the pure heat that I so loved in the old jalapeno cheddar chips.
It’s definitely *supposed *to be a re-release of the tacoey goodness of yore, but is a sad, heartless imitation. A clone. A pod [del] person [/del] chip if you will.
I have also tried the Late Nite Taco abomination of which you speak and while it pretty much sucked, I wasn’t really expecting anything great so therefore didn’t suffer the crushing disappointment I feel today.
Just remember, it could always be worse. Does anyone else remember the “mystery flavor” that turned out to be Mt Dew? Those were completely inedible.
I miss their 3D Doritos. They were like a cross between Doritos and Bugles, and I loved 'em.
Oh, yeah. The Ranch incarnation of the 3D were great when dipped in Major Grey’s chutney.
The best thing ever put out under the Doritos label were the Salsa n’ Cheese Tortilla Thins. After that, it was all just downhill.
I am puzzled by their recent efforts in this direction: “Late nite” “All Nighter,” etc.
Are there really people who find themselves craving Doritos toward the end of an “All nighter?” Who has that much self-loathing?
Nobody needs corn chips at 4:00am, man.
Why do they always introduce flavors only to discontinue them within a few months? What’s the point of that?
I dunno. They tasted kinda the way I remembered them. It’s been so long anyways how can you really remember what they tasted like?
We have the jalapeno cheddar ones in Canada. I will gladly trade you some of those for some of the salsa verde ones.
I’m pretty sure the target market is for the 20something bar crowds that hit the “Quickie Marts” in droves after last call looking for something to munch on.
