I had no less than three people point out to me that I should use the hand sanitizer both before and after the hand scanner. I’m all for health, but overreaction annoys me.
It’s my day off. I’ve done laundry, showered, taken a brisk walk to the town hall to drop off the check for my property taxes, and am now considering naptime. Normally, I’d clean the house, but I’ve decided to not clean ANYTHING until this weekend so I have tons of stuff to do and don’t think so much about the fact that I quit smoking.
At least, I hope I’ll have quit smoking. I’ll let you know on Friday.
Welcome back, Haze! Of course, I don’t know where you’ve been, but I’m sure I’ll find out when you post the required pictures.
And, actually, that Reuters article is incorrect, as everybody except our esteemed Deputy Health Minister* is calling it “Swine Flu.” So let’s extend the “contagious idiocy” to the Fourth Estate as well, while we’re at it…
Actually, I probably should be calling him “Acting Health Minister,” since, for arcane political reasons, there is currently no full-time Health Minister (officially, the PM is holding the portfolio.)
Not that I have ever really doubted media frenzy and the compulsion to whore oneself out to feed the 24 hours news cycle, but this whole swine flu thing is some crazy shit.
I had my first crank call at the library yesterday. No, not a child’s prank–an old lady calling about how she had to know all about this swine flu because her friend is in the hospital (not with the flu, but with MRSA) and her son went to visit her and now is afraid to go to work because he’s been exposed to MRSA.
What this has to do with swine flu escaped me then and still does. Re the MRSA, I told her to tell him to wash his damned hands WELL after touching her and visiting her and he should be fine. (and of course to call his doctor with any questions). I am sure the nurses at the hospital told him to do the same.
Still don’t see a connection, though. She told me it was the news about the SF that just made her “all that more worried.”
Good Afternoon Y’all! Three down two to go! WOOHOO!!!
I have declared tonight to be pizza night. Even to the point of goin’ to get it myself. I don’t wanna cook or heat up anything or wash a dish. So There!
To make up for it though, I do have a beef roast in the slow cooker for tomorrow night. I had gotten sorta lazy on the cookin’ front so I’m tryin’ to be better. I mean, there are three freezers full of meats and veggies in da cave, so I need to cook.
Muppet grillin’ in knee deep snow is a special kind of crazy. Heck, I sometimes throw stuff on the grill, run back inside and go out just to turn it and take it off when it’s cold here and people think there’s several layers of crazy in that!
Howdy Haze! We want pictures and tales of debauchery!
Speaking as someone who lived in Toronto during the whole SARS crisis, I can assure you that it was a pretty freakin’ big deal for us… not that the general populace was ever really at risk, but it did hit some of our nursing homes and hospitals quite badly (which is the last place you want any respiratory illness to end up). What really really hurt us was the travel advisory that WHO decided to issue, even after it was obvious that we had everything well under control.
SARS killed 43 people in 2003, while homicides killed 67. No wonder people freaked out.
Still, there was some benefit in the end… the whole mess led to a pretty significant overhaul of the way our medical system handles outbreaks of contagious disease - interestingly enough, as we speak, one of my friends is doing some work with the Ministry of Health as part of that particular project, as they’re still implementing a lot of the new procedures. She’s a little busy right now, to say the least.
Thus endeth our history lesson for the day. Pop quiz tomorrow!
Just got an email about signing up for a blood drive, and everyone who donates blood will receive two rather contradictory bonuses. A free cholesterol test and coupons for free Jack In The Box food.
Earlier this year, my nephew’s school had a “run-athon” where the students got people to pledge X number of dollars per lap completed. My nephew ran more laps than any kid in the school (though we still don’t know how big the laps were–I think he may very well have been running around a coffee table). It cost my mom a lo-ho-hot of money, and his prize for being so physically fit?
Two hundred dollars (less than Mom’s contribution, but still a lot of money for a ten-year-old), and a year’s worth of Chick-Fil-A.
Oooh! I forgot to mention!
A college bud of mine is scheduled to be on Letterman tomorrow (Thursday) night. His name is Peter Berkrot. I have no clue why, though.
Whew - what a day! I wrapped up the tasker I started yesterday, and started the final part of the tasker my co-worker had started. I spent several hours getting his stuff in order and ready to upload, only to learn that it wasn’t a real tasker - just a ruse to make people practice the uploading process. I’ve been using the uploading tool for 2 years. What a waste!!!
At least I got out on time. Then **FCD **and I went to Salsa’s for supper. ¡Muy yummo!
Gotta do my sketchbook for class - due tomorrow. So off to sketch…
Posted a link to that recipe on the blog because it sounds yummy and I happen to have Spanish chorizo in the fridge (my brother went to a conference that was sponsored by the Spanish government; he got enough freebies that he could share).
I notice there’s a lot of OHMYGAWDIT’STHEAPOCALYPSEENDOFCIVILIZATIONANDWE’REALLGONNADIEAGONIZINGDEATHS 111!!!111 in the news. Did anyone else notice that? According to the German news, Mexico has revised the number of confirmed cases and deaths down. And the news also said: 1) there are thousands of people who die of the flu every year (just in Germany), and 2) DON’T PANIC.
I’ve been knitting and watching my German soap opera. And now I’ma going to do a bit of clean-up and then crawl into bed. My allergies are pretty bad this year, so I’m more tired than usual…
Did everyone see Lucky’s Funeral? (Lucky was a goldfish, by the way.) It’s incredibly cute.
