I grew up in Green Bay, a.k.a. the Toilet Paper Capital of the World. That smell was a distinct part of my childhood.

I can top that. How about the sulfurous smell from a paper mill and tide flats on Puget Sound? I grew up in Tacoma, Washington. For years everyone that ever drove through the city on I-5 or visited downtown at the right time of the day would smell it. The infamous Aroma of Tacoma.
