"Tank for Tua" OR The 0-16 NFL Season Thread (2019 ed.)

Cincinnati is the lone winless team and Washington is the only one win team.

Giants are still in it having lost to the Jets today.

Can I brag that I bet the Dolphins ML this week?

Bombing for Burrow? Blow it for Burrow? Being Bad for Burrow?

Redshirt senior, yes.

How about “Burrowing in the Dirt”?

Bengals still winless, but still have Miami and the Jets on the schedule. Skins have the Jets next, and probably no other winnable games after that, so if they lose this Sunday, they could have a real shot at the top pick. #2 pick, for them, is effectively just as good.

Tua Tagovailoa got carted off the field after convincing Nick Saban to let him play one more series in a blowout.

With so many holes in the ‘Skins, I don’t see them going for a QB unless something crazy happens. Haskins will get at least one full season as starter.

Tua was initially rumored to have a fractured hip, but the latest is a dislocated hip, which doesn’t sound much better to me but apparently is.

2020 is allegedly deep at OL and WR. I could see Washington accidentally drafting some quality players trying to support Haskins.

Sidebar please.

What does “Tank for Tua” mean?

“Tanking” is a term for intentionally losing – in this case, in hopes of getting the #1 draft choice next year.

“Tua” is Tua Tagovailoa, the Alabama quarterback who, at the beginning of the season, was projected to be the #1 overall draft choice next year. (And, as mentioned in the previous posts, Tua suffered a bad hip injury on Saturday.)

A few years back, when Andrew Luck was going to be entering the draft, the term “Suck for Luck” was coined (i.e., suck this year, so you might have a chance to draft Luck next year). Since then, people have tried to come up with similar pithy terms for the “race for the bottom” in the NFL each year.

Tanking is a term for a sports team intentionally playing badly.

Tua is Tuanigamanuolepola Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the University of Alabama football team. He has a very good reputation and will be entering the the pros next year.

For more context:

Each year, before the start of the season, NFL teams have a draft for the new players coming out of college football programs. The teams with the worst records in the previous season get the first picks.

So there is speculation that some teams are deliberately attempting to have a bad record this year so they will get the first draft pick and be able to sign Tagovailoa for their team. They are “tanking for Tua”.

OL help would be great and the ‘Skins need a cornerback as well. I have no idea what to think of Haskins this season, the team is truly dreadful. Guice at RB and McLaurin at WR are potential bright spots, haven’t had Guice healthy long enough.

Since the QB position is so important in NFL football, it can be seen as a smart investment if you have one bad season, then draft a great QB that you can build a team around for a decade or more of success.

But football history is chock full of amazing college QBs who fail in the NFL. And overlooked QBs who get drafted very late and become generational talents.

Examples of good-to-great QBs who are starters in the NFL include Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, and Dak Prescott.

Bengals at 0-11 now, but the only unwinnable game they have in the last five weeks is against New England.

They play the Jets and the Dolphins, and two against the Browns. Cleveland are clearly a better team than Cincinnati, but divisional games in the AFC North are nearly always tough, no matter the actual W-L record of the teams involved.

Can this thread be renamed “The Chase for Chase” now?

I prefer “Fall Down on Your Face for Chase”.

Redskins screwed themselves by beating the Lions. The Lions really didn’t want to win that game it seemed. Still looking at a top-4 pick, but likely eliminated from #1.

Giants win all strength-of-schedule tiebreakers, followed by Miami and Washington for all teams currently 2-9 (.182 win %).

If the Giants, Dolphins, Redskins, Broncos, and Falcons all end the season 3-13, SOS tiebreakers are:
Giants (.466)
Dolphins (.506)
Redskins (.509)
Broncos (.537)
Falcons (.571)

and would pick 2-6, in that order.

If the Giants, Dolphins, Redskins all end the season 2-14, same order.

I like that, but I think it’s more euphonious if you drop a word:

“Fall on Your Face for Chase”
