Yes, I have agreed to tape Howard Stern off the radio for my husband because they’ve cracked down at work and won’t let him listen over the computer any more. Walkmans, etc. don’t work very well in his building. So I am stuck at home with a stack of 90 minute blank audio tapes which I have to flip over every 45 minutes. This pretty much ties up my mornings and entombs me in the house. Surely, SURELY there’s a better way? Hasn’t someone invented some device which will allow you to tape more than 45 minutes at a time?
I think there is a solution. It’s called the 120 minute audio tape…
Hook the radio receiver up to the VCR and record six hours at a time.
Try using your PC. Connect to the streaming version of the show and use some audio recording software to capture it. Burn it off to CD-R or CD-RW and listen at your leisure.
Dropping the quality down from 44,100Hz Stereo could give days of recording time on a 20GB drive. Given the problems encountered with files over 2GB under Windows9x, even 44.1kHz Stereo would give about 3 hours of time with that size limitation.
Sorry about the hi jack but can anyone provide a link to the Howard Stern Show streamer?
There is a quarter speed tape recorder called the reel talk. You can record 6 hours per side on a 90 minute tape.
It seems awfully expensive for just a tape recorder and radio, though. Last I checked, it was somewhere in the $120 range. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the site that sells it right now.
Thanks for the suggestions. I don’t know much about this kind of stuff. I recall an advertisement a couple years ago for something that will let you record a radio talk show in its entirety , but of course I didn’t pay any attention. It was on the expensive side. It probably was the reel talk thing.
Just be glad he doesn’t want you to edit the commercials. I second the VCR idea, btw.
Some recorders have an auto-reverse function.
Would save you at lest one tape flip.
He does have a TV show on E. Is it not just a video rebroadcast of his radio show?

It is, but it is only a 30 highlight of his 4 plus hour show, but you do get to see what the people are doing, instead of having to rely on imagination, even if the best parts are blurred out.
I’m shocked to hear that your husband could listen to a streaming audio Howard Stern Show. Can you ask him what website he gets this at? The Howard Stern Show is owned by Infinity Radio which has a strict policy of not allowing any webcasting whatsoever. This is why there are no CBS-owned radio stations currently on the web. I personally feel that this is a rather short-sighted policy, but I understand their reasoning. They don’t want a web broadcast competing with the local over-the-air broadcast.
Anyways…as for the OP, I agree with Montfort, a VCR can record the entire program with great audio quality. But I betcha your husband doesn’t have a VCR in his office to listen to it with. So…I guess the next best thing would be to pop for a DOUBLE Cassette Tape Deck. This way you could record four hours of the show at a time. Now if only there was a way you could get it to automatically cut out the Stern show’s 15 minute commercial breaks…
I’m not sure they make that anymore. It used to be sold by the C. Crane Company, but I don’t see it on their site anymore. They are going to be offering what I think may be the new model in the fall: The VersaCorder. $99.95 Available 9/15.
Newer MD players that support the “MDLP” standard can record 320 minutes on an 80-minute disk. Of course, it would be even more expensive than the $120 gadget already mentioned, but at least MD players are useful for music as well.
How long is the show anyway?
The show is anywhere between four and five hours long, depending on Howard’s mood.
And I third the people who are interested in a Stern stream. Infinity does not like that, at least AFAIK. If it really exists and is legal, I would love it if someone would post the link b/c I’m in a similar situation at work, and I’m in withdrawl.
The reel talk player is still sold. I just heard a radio commercial for it about half an hour ago
Oops! I just heard the commercial again. It’s not the Reel Talk Player. This device is called the Talk Radio Recorder, sold by Martel Electronics for $98. It will record up to 8 hours on a 120 min tape. You can visit their website at http://www.talkradiorecorder.com. I have not used this product personally.
But it’s still more expensive than a VCR. A hifi VCR can be bought for under $100, and 2/4/6 hour VHS tapes are about $1.50 each (and you don’t need to flip the tape if it runs over 4 hours). Even at the lowest speed, the audio quality will be better than the FM band is capable of broadcasting (not that quality is that important when listening to Stern). And it has a built-in real time counter, so it makes it easy to fast-forward 10 minutes or whatever. And you can still use it as a VCR. All you need to do is connect your VCR to your receiver; if it doesn’t have VCR in/out then use the tape in/out. Done.
I’m sympathetic.
But the problem is, Howard “Lawyers are ruining this country” Stern ironically has been rather iron-fisted in the past when it comes to Stern-related websites.
AFAIK, any site that broadcasts his show would be illegal and thus could put this board in knee-deep legal doo-doo. So I’d recommend against posting such a link, even if any existed.
Having said that, his TV show often features some of his more fanatical fans. One of which has taped every radio show for years. They were all recorded on VHS tapes.
FYI frinkboy and anyone else interested - I’m told that they were listening to Howard Stern on the computer at work until fairly recently, but not any more. Apparently ,as has been pointed out, this was not kosher and someone somewhere out there got wise to the situation and put a stop to it. The (taped) Howard Stern show was broadcast from a midwestern radio station early in the morning and the server carrying it had such heavy traffic that it was constantly crashing.
