Previews for next week look like she gets put on the spot for the pass. But previews are often misleading.
It was middle of the night when Phil eliminated the last team, and it seemed to be mid-day when the second to last team finished. They might have had to close down some of the roadblock locations for the night, and Phil was probably in a hurry to get to the next leg. If they were that far behind, it makes sense to eliminate them in the airport just for production reasons.
No, they made a bad decision and their own bad decision was the sole reason they lost. The ticket lady sent them from way ahead of everyone else to even with everyone except the ER docs. Even with 8 teams is perfectly fine, no reason to panic. But they panicked and chose to make a completely unwarranted desperation move, and it predictably went horribly wrong. That’s 100% on them.
As NFL players, what they did was the equivalent of throwing a Hail Mary on 4th and long from their own 30 late in the 4th quarter of a tie game.
I hate eliminations that are travel-related because it could have happened to any of them. That’s why everyone hates connecting flights. Or, if you are going to connect, it’s more prudent to take the flight which will put you closer to where you’re supposed to be. IIRC there was a couple a few seasons ago who were eliminated simply because they thought, by taking X and Y connecting flights unlike everyone else, they’d be in front of the pack :smack:
Not saying that it could never work, btw. But it’s very hail-mary-chancy and the the football players have nobody to blame except themselves because they chose it. However, they didn’t choose the travel agent screwing up their initial flight details. When they realized what had happened, I knew they were in danger.
Who was it who mentioned the Panama Canal? Did anyone notice the look on “Magellean”'s face when it was uttered? LOLOL.
Oh, and Pinky can take that Express Pass and put it you-know-where as far as I’m concerned. There’s a difference between being strategic and being a plain and simple b-word, and honey, everyone who watched last night’s episode will probably side with the b-word.
Because that would be against the law. Game shows (which reality shows like “The Amazing Race” are) are required to file the structure of the episode (questions, challenges, etc.) to the FCC before each episode tapes, in order to help assure that the producers cannot substantially alter the outcome of the game. Switching this episode to a non-elimination round midstream would have violated that.
I just DVR it (The Amazing Race and the following 1 or 2 programs) and watch something else. Added benefit: zipping through the ads.
I am resigned, as a person living in the Midwest, to the constant assault of sports, and football in particular. It’s on televisions in restaurants, doctors’ offices and workplaces. I try to avoid these places, but it can be a challenge. At home, I can control it.
Really? I don’t disbelieve you (mostly), but do you have a cite for that? Specifically that they have to file details with the FCC before each episode? I know shenanigans are illegal if you want to continue calling it a “game” show, (thanks to Robert Redford and Ralph Fiennes), but I didn’t know they had to file information ahead of time.
And I have to say it was brilliant of the ER doctors & the dating couple to team up on the Magellan challenge - that one seemed a LOT easier when you had 4 people working it at once - two people running the giant compass (though it appears they relied mostly on a piece of string instead), and two people checking each others math. Especially when the crowds showed up, so you could have people running interference while doing the measurements.
I don’t, unfortunately (but I’m looking). I have a family member that has worked for Burnett for years, who is very familiar with the process. So if she’s lying/mistaken, I’d be really surprised. But beyond that, I don’t have anything more substantial for you - sorry.
I seem to remember in a past TAR or Survivor thread someone linked us up to some legal decision showing that “reality” shows aren’t governed by those FCC gameshow rules.
I found this episode really annoying, mainly because of the 25 minutes spent on airport shenanigans. OK, airline bookings can get confusing and people get delayed. We get it. No need to waste half the episode on it.
Pinky is a loathsome creature.
The Bunny Wives seem rather… close. Not that I’m complaining.

Pretty much what I came in to post.
About the Bunnies, my wife said, “I guess kissing on the lips is the new high five.”
Footballers elimination: They took a gamble. They knew it. Really bad burn.
I was thinking there would be a bunching point this ep (which is more annoying to me than taxi and other travel issues), and was really surprised at the outcome.
If this were my first ever ep to watch of TAR, I wouldn’t bother coming back.
OK, that’s cool. Thinking more on it, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if game shows DO file some sort of due diligence with the FCC as a protective measure in case questions ever come up , but I would be surprised it’s actually required by the FCC, as opposed to the network legal department.
And I’d expect it would be extremely difficult for shows like TAR and Survivor, where (a) contestants, tasks, etc. could change at the last minute due to weather, a drop out, or other unforeseen circumstances, and (b) the fact that they’re filming well outside the USA could make getting that information to FCC problematic.
There are some producer issues for them to consider if they made this a non-elimination leg at the 11th hour.
They would have to schedule another camera and sound crew available for the extra team for the next leg (and others down the line)
They would have to have an additional resources (cars) at the next leg.
I like the NFLers, but they should have been eliminated, and they were going to be so far behind the other teams chances are that they would be eliminated on the next leg.
The NFLers got to the airport at night, wonder if the Coach Museum was even open. And would there be enough light at the Magellan square and the roadblock shooting arena.
How did Pinky know they weren’t in last place? She seemed pretty confident they didn’t need to use the Express Pass. But they were behind everyone but the NFLers, and how could she know they weren’t ahead of her (they should have been, but for plane delays). I think she was really lucky, but for those plane delays, she could have been eliminated with the Express Pass in hand (and wouldn’t that have been sweet).
I was wondering that, too. She seemed sure she wasn’t last, but I have no idea how she could have known. Was it just last season (or the one before) where team was eliminated holding the pass?
Agreed! Their elimination was almost entirely the result of their less than calculated gamble. Being five hours behind one or even a few teams would not guarantee a loss. Even being behind everyone else by five hours isn’t necassarily fatal. It seemed like they got caught up in the advantage that they arguably should have had and made a.poor decision as a result.
FWIW, the preemptions aren’t Football’s fault. The problem is the popularity of 60 Minutes. There was a time when CBS would just skip 60 Minutes or truncate it to one or two stories (instead of the normal three) but it is just too popular to continue to do that so they have to show it in its entirety which pushes the schedule back. FOX just schedules Football and Post game analysis for that hour so they have flexibility and rarely (but still sometimes) have to push back their schedule on Sunday nights.
Also, not for nothing but Football is literally the most popular thing on TV so I don’t think it is getting relegated to Cable only anytime soon.
That reminds me… Wasn’t Phil’s “You’re the last team to arrive… (pause)… (pause)… except for one” deliciously evil?
I agree that CBS will keep football for the foreseeable future, but Monday Night Football did get moved to cable several years back. Of course, that’s Monday prime time, so that may have had something to do with it.
I did, but unless the reaction shot is in frame with the person causing the reaction I never really believe it had anything to do with what the editing implies.
Just as likely a producer said, “now pretend you just heard them say something stupid and we’ll use that if they actually do.”
Lame tasks again. Been a while since we’ve seen a truly difficult roadblock or detour that left a team member in tears.
With the last two eliminations we are in danger of having no teams left but young pretty white generic teams.
