Target 'Big Dog' Christmas ad

Has everyone seen this commerical yet?

In spite of the fact that it was first aired in mid-October, I liked this ad, as I do most of Target’s efforts that include a catchy song and a bull terrier.

BUT, consider how the gigantic dog representing a big box store is essentially trampling on the festive, bustling, quintessential, small town “main street” that we’re always so nostalgic for. You can almost make out the details in the quaint little shop windows, until the frame gets filled with the giant bag of gift and ornaments dropped carelessly by Bullseye.

Am I the only one who picked up on this subliminal message?

Let’s move this to Cafe Society (from MPSIMS) and see if anyone there has.

It’s not a subliminal message. Pretty damn overt actually.

I like that dog.

Still, it’s no Maria Bamford

Interesting. . . so, Target wants people to Christmas shop at their stores. . . hmmm. . .

But seriously, good call, and I, like you, wonder if that symbolism was intented.

Good catch. Arguably, it would’ve been more endearing to slowly zoom in on a normal-sized Bullseye carrying a bag. I’m guessing the ideal subliminal message is that they have a HUGE selection, not that they’re a ruthless corporate machine intent on putting Mom and Pop out of business.
