Technical Assistance: No Pop Up Windows

A co-worker is having a problem with his browser that I can’t figure out. Our IT person is next to useless and so it would be best to avoid asking for a reinstall if it isn’t necessary.

Essentially the problem is this: Anything that involves creating a new browser window doesn’t work. If you click on a link that is supposed to create a child browser, then the window appears but is blank. If you go to a site with pop up ads, the ad window appears but is blank. If you right click on a link and say “open in new window” then the window appears but is blank.

Any of these links can be opened if you put the URL into the address line. Just to be clear: the window appears (with the correct attributes) but the content does not load.

The browser is IE5.5 and the OS is Windows 2000.

I’m hoping this is just a stupid security setting or something easy. Any ideas?

You have javascript enabled?

Yes, I believe it is. I’ll confirm tomorrow, though.

However, even if it were turned off, that shouldn’t affect the “Open in New Window” option when you right click a link, should it?

I’ve heard of this problem happening on some of the NT machines here at work. Our IT guy just tells everyone to download the service pack for 5.5, which is service pack 2 (link). It seems to do the trick.
