- Couldn’t tell it by looking at me, though. I look a lot smarter.
I qualified for Mensa in 1985, with an IQ of 139.

Eden, have you read Emotional Intelligence? I certainly agree with the “multiple intelligence” theories. My mother has taught English and Psychology, and she’s now an “adult educator”. She believes firmly in multiple intelligences as well. Have you done any research into the theory of visual/kinesthetic/verbal processors as well? Neat stuff.

Two weeks ago @ http://www.onlinepsych.com/: 134*
*I’m really proud of this one. I did it in 20 minutes while drunk out of my mind.
Note: All these numbers really prove is that I know how to take a test.

Well, I’ve never stated this publicly, because I was always leery of people thinking I was bragging (not my style, but people can be sensitive about this).
However, given the company I seem to be in and the posts to date, there’s not much chance of that happening here, so here it goes… ::deep breath, taking plunge::
Actually, now that I try to think of it, I can’t remember exactly (well it was the 7th grade so I was 11 or 12, and that’s 25 years ago) but IIRC it was 134 or 136 or something in that area. Still more than 2 sigma above the average Joe, but not enough to make me feel like I have to put it to use in some extraordinary way. Although my grandmother is always trying to persuade me to try out for Jeopardy. (Of course grandmothers are supposed to think their grandkids are geniuses, aren’t they?
)
I’ve passed the tests for Jeopardy! four times, and thus been in the eligible contestant pool, but never got called once. Maybe I wouldn’t look so appealing on camera…

Gaudere: I have read a couple of articles by Meyer and Salovey (sp?) but I picked up one of the books (Emotional Intelligence and Development, or something like that) and couldn’t get through it. Kudos to you if you got all the way through it, God, it was dense.
I find Gardner’s stuff much easier to read, but since I’m not in the field a lot of the jargon is lost on me!
Did you read about all this through your mom, too? My mom taught “gifted” at grade school level until that was no longer PC…then it was “enrichment.”
And dougie_monty: if you ever get on Jeopardy, you’d better let us all know! I’ll root for you!
Thankx!
I’ve read a ton of child psych and teaching and training books since my mom would buy them and I’d just pick them up. My mom also ran a program for gifted kids, too, at a community college. I remember when they changed “gifted” to “enrichment” and I did several cartoons on “Enriched Kids! Grade A+”, etc.
I suppose I am used to the jargon by now, but I still find the academia-speak to be tiresome. However, I have inherited my mother’s bias against writers who offer no studies or bibliographies to back up their ideas (I want studies and methodologies and results, not pretty theories!), and that tends to favor the “denser” stuff.

Hi all, 141 here
Don’t let the loveless ones sell you a world wrapped in grey.
167 - if I remember correctly. Note that while most of my schooling was in the US, I did a year in Ireland before they tested me. Also, I am one of those who taught themselves to read at 3 years old…
The reason gentlemen prefer blondes is that there are not enough redheads to go around.
175 as a kid; haven’t had it tested since.
So I’m leading the pack thus far – which would be really nice if IQ scores actually meant anything.
Catrandom
I got a 145, but I cheated ;)…
BTW - Satan,
Although you seem like an intelligent fellow, IIRC, the new theory is that intelligence is passed through the X chromosome (Keep that in mind when breeding
), so you got your mama’s brains, honey.
Got any sisters? They got half from your dad and half from your mom.

I am proud to say that I have never taken an IQ test, since I consider them to be essentially meaningless. That does not mean that I am not proud to say that I once dated a girl with a 137 IQ, and I usually did better than her on other standardized tests, like the SATs, so I figure something in that range. I have a cousin who once claimed to have an IQ of 210. This was the same cousin who, in a discussion of atomic bombs, said “Wouldn’t it suck if the bomb bay doors froze up right after they lit the wick?” He said that I had an IQ of about 200, since the way he saw it, I had to be almost as smart as him. Gee, thanks. He works for the FBI now. Go figure.
I was measured a few years back at 144. I wanted to join Mensa, so I paid $35.00 to take their test, (you have to pass it if you want to become a member).
I failed.
Didn’t get my money back, either.
If you’re an optimist, you haven’t been paying attention.
Hmmmmmm, IQ tests: like weighing scales – I never go near them.
A year or three ago it was 139, dunno if its changed since then. I don’t feel any smarter or dumber, so I’d say it didn’t. Then again, if I’ve gotten really dumb since then, would I know it?

On two different tests, 143 and 145. I suppose this puts me above average, but geez, around you guys, reading all of the posts throughout this board, I’m not even sure if I feel as good as average.
Let me just say, you’re a great bunch of people dabbing the corner of my eye with a hanky

Took it as a kid, have no idea of the score, smart enough not to ask.
For whatever it’s worth, I have more respect for the multiple intelligence approach. The standard IQ tests are too culturally biased to be taken w/o a grain of salt.
