Ten years of the Dope: a history

Well, she had to be a real person to post, but whether or not the stories were true is another discussion. I think I missed that one.

Stage Manager

The infamous Kaitlyn who started as Number 6.

There was a sock puppet named (IIRC) Can of Pineapples who came back from the Board that Must Not Be Named with a bunch of links that destroyed the story. It was brutal to watch someone being dissected like that.

On a related note, there was RedFury’s outing of Chumpsky’s fairly blatant plagiarism. Not to mention one of the most notorious prankings in SDMB history - december and his “Did the President Lie?” thread in GD. december posted some statements about Iraq and WMDs and asked if it was an example of the President lying. Everyone then chimed in agreeing that, sure enough, it was lies from beginning to end. Then it turned out that the President in question was Clinton, and there was back-peddling and “I knew that all along!” like only the SDMB can do. That wasn’t the reason they gave for banning december, but from then on he had a big fat target painted on his ass.

Thanks.

The faked transsexual story was Number Six/Kaitlyn. That was not as long ago as I remembered: the archive is here.

Speaking of classic SDMB hoaxes, anyone else remember Pajama Pants Girl?

FWIW, the december thread.

Not to hijack but after the quote was outed at Clinton’s I see nobody doing anything like you describe. Maybe you could make a case for An Arky but it wouldn’t be very strong IMO.

One way or the other you are way off base with your description.

Another moderator for the list is fluiddruid.

The backpeddling happened in the inevitable Pitting. I believe the title of one of them was something about post-modernism. I have used up my searches for the next five minutes - perhaps I will dig it up later.

She still moderates The Game Room. Colibri was listing retired mods, although SkipMagic is still on board as a utility administrator, without a specific assignment to one forum.

This thread has been really interesting so far. It would be a shame for it to get derailed with political bickering.

Anyway, back on topic, speaking of Homer, I’ve always been partial to a monkey that i wish for

The things I do for you…

Kitchen Disasters

Actually found that through The Top 101 StraightDope Threads…Of All Time

Most of that thread applies to this thread.

And I love you for it. Now, do you want gingersnaps or chocolate chip cookies? (Baked from scratch, of course.)

Please forgive me if this one has been mentioned but I seem to remember a guy who wrote a very involved story about meeting some girl and pursuing her for dates. The tale became more and more outlandish until he was with her on a beach when out of the blue a bunch of wild horses ran past them. Did I imagine this?

Use Google with the site modifier, like this example:

post-modernism site:boards.straightdope.com

Note that there is no space after the colon so it won’t get “site” confused with a keyword. That’s how I’ve been finding threads with greater ease.

He may be a little too recent to warrant mention in the list (in other words, too recent to be remembered as a piece of board history in the sense that The Grapist or december were), but I’ll throw the idea out anyway:

SmashTheState

He was not at all afraid of letting people know he was a Wobbly, to know about his efforts to organize a panhandlers union in Ottawa, and to refuse to use the letter C in names like “Kanada” and “Amerika.” Unfortunately, in a few very entertaining threads, he ran up against the debating power of the Dopers. Some of his more interesting threads:

Promotion of illegal activity – an activist’s view
Ask the Organizer of the Ottawa Panhandlers’ Union
So any of you know what “science” is?

To his credit, he was not a one-trick-pony, and did contribute a number of reasonable and interesting posts to non-political threads in IMHO, CS, and MPSIMS; but I’d suggest it was his OPs and subsequent posts in the above threads (among others) that he would be best-remembered for. Still, he was fairly recent, so I don’t know if it’s too soon to say that he belongs in the list.

Do you remember King Nifty? He had a particularly fabulous flame-out, as I recall.

I think this was the Pajama Pants Girl thread. The ensuing Pit thread was already linked, but here’s the original thread that started it.

King Nifty’s flame-out. (Good memory, ivylass!)

I’ve been here entirely too long.
