Funny you should mention hypocritical bigotry, as if terryo hadn’t attempted to blame a worldwide Church pedophilia scandal on homosexuals and the liberal media, or suggested that voting for pro-choice candidates could be considered a sin but supporting candidates in favor of the death penalty or the Iraq War was just fine. He handwaves away the evidence in his own citations and uses his political and religion views to reinforce each other to the exclusion of any actual facts being presented. And that’s not even getting into the sheer hubris of impying that his (or rather, his link’s) interpretation of Catholicism is the “true” one and all others are corrupt or misguided.
We don’t think he’s an asshole because he’s Catholic. We don’t think he’s an asshole because he’s conservative. We think he’s an asshole because he’s pretty consistently demonstrated in his posts that he’s an asshole.
That didn’t take long; he posted yet another copy-and-paste OP that’s been disappeared, and is now banned.
And yet BrainGlutton remains.

Eh, what’s the point?
I was really looking forward to this pitting and was not disappointed. That guy was a tool.
I never start pit threads, or any others for that matter. Yet yesterday I was itching to start one for terryobrien80. Sure, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s a USDA Prime Number One Quality Asshole. Not sure why he was banned, I was hoping that would appear in the ATMB forum. But holy shit, my dog is capable of more critical thinking that this guy.
He may have been banned for repeatedly posting entire pages of text from other sites, rather than just snippets and a link. He did this in several other threads. Reminds me of nabbing Capone for tax evasion.
Discussions of moderating belong in ATMB. Since we’re already here: terryobrien asked me to delete his account. I explained that we don’t do that, and all he had to do was sign off if he doesn’t want to post here. That wasn’t good enough for him, so he said he was going to troll the board and force us to ban him. Considering how obnoxious he was when he was not trolling, I figured I might as well ban him now instead of finding out what he could do when he put his mind to it.

Could you at least change the thread name to something like “get stuffed” instead of the current rule-breaking version? It niggles at me and I hate getting niggled.
I found it interesting, and jawdroppingly unbelievable, to peer into his mind. Never did get a feel for whether his views were common in “conservative Catholics” and that is something I would very much like to know.
In the end, his voice isn’t drowned out. There are plenty of places where his views are discussed as if they were perfectly normal - he linked to one. I’m not sure it’s productive to send all those folks back to such places to ferment. They need some fresh air and sunshine that only the Straight Dope can provide.
Unfortunately, I think his views are all too common among conservative Catholics. I converted to Catholicism to get married but retained my pro-choice, pro gay rights, liberal political views. My in-laws are all very conservative and they pass along the most disgustingly bigoted political glurge you can imagine. And they don’t write the stuff, so it has a much larger base than my in-laws. The anti-Muslim crap they send around would make Hitler blush. Certainly this poster was an ignorant rube, but he’s just the tip of a very ugly iceberg.
IME, the views of conservative Catholics tend to be much more… considered than terry’s. Much more considered than the views of most conservative Protestants (fundamentalists, evangelicals, what have you) too, for that matter.
That’s not to say that they’re all Bricker, but like Bricker they accept that they’ve made an irrational choice and aren’t offended when that gets pointed out. If anything, they seem to view it as an affirmation of their faith.
I got the same stuff from my in-laws and they aren’t Catholic. I have to believe that they just forward that carp the same way they forward every LOLcat and “you’ve gotta see this” email that comes into their “computer mail thingie.” But yeah, I’m starting to worry about that ugly iceburg.

Out of interest - why do you think a person has a right to express opinions “without being swarmed by hate”?
Does that apply to any opinions, or only opinions people say God wants them to have?
