Test of edited posts. Someone else post, too.

I’m trying something involving edited posts, that I noticed just now in another thread.

ETA: I want to see if it’s common to everyone’s posts, or just the ones of your own that you’ve edited. Someone else please make a post, then edit it, and I will then post what I was trying to look at. Don’t want to taint anyone with advanced knowledge…

Okay, now what?

Edit your post. Add something, anything…

ETA: test.

Actually, I just noticed that what I noticed in the other thread goes away when the edit window has closed. What I saw was that this:

had this part:

as a link, that if you click on it, goes to a page where you can compare posts. I wanted to see if that happened when someone else edited theirs, but as it turns out, even if it does, you have to see the edited post within 5 minutes of the original post time, even if it’s your post. If it does work for other people’s edited posts, it will only do so within 5 minutes of their original post time, anyway.

ETA: In other words, never mind. I’d have to catch someone posting to this thread, and then editing their post, before their edit window closes, to even find out if it works that way. I’m not going to reload this thread once per minute, just to see if that link will show up on someone else’s post.

Another interesting thing about it I just found. The link in your post goes away when the edit window closes, but if you kept a tab open for the page it goes to, that page can be renewed, any buttons clicked on, etc. long after the edit window closed. Not that it does you any good, since there’s no way, from that page, to re-edit your post again. No edit-window loophole exists. Let’s try something else that suggests itself…

That might work, but I need someone to edit a post. Ok, I retract my “never mind”. Someone post, then edit your post. Post something, delete it all, then edit it to something else. I’ll see if I can tell you what you originally posted…

If this works, then no one will ever again be able to hide their original, unedited spew… There are no secrets…

Also - great “Sneakers” reference, though I think it was “no more secrets”.

It wasn’t a reference to that, because I have no idea what you are referring to. Nevertheless, Thank you. I’m about to try what I thought of on your post. Let’s see what happens…

Nope. I get this:

I guess it means you only have access to your own posts, that way… There are still some secrets…

For some of you. Mods get to see all this stuff.

Yes, we know. I’m trying to find ways around your evil powers. Preferably ways that won’t get me banned as an evil hacker, but, hey, if that’s what it takes… And especially if I find a way to get your powers, too…

Yes, I’m evil. Muahahaha…

If it’s so easy that even I’m doing it wrong, then maybe you’re doing it wrong…

And if you saved it as a bookmark, it still works hours later. I’m still curious about something, though. Am I the only non-mod who can access that page for my edited post, or can anyone else get to this page?

And what I tried with this post, that didn’t work, worked when I tried it for my first post in this thread, so it does work for all of your own edited posts, but does not work to see other people’s edited posts. So no, there isn’t an easy, sneaky way for us peons to gain modlike powers to view people’s original posts after they’ve edited them.

FTR, mods, if it had been successful, I would have told you about it, and how I did it, so you could close the security hole, had it actually existed. I’m not really evil, I just play it on TV, or message-boards, as the case may be…

Hmmm… Just thought of something else.

ETA: Let’s try it.

ETAA: yes it works, but it’s trivial, useless, and uninteresting.

[Butthead]You said taint. huh huh huh[/butthead]

, too.

Interesting. I might go look for that movie sometime…

It’s a great movie, with a fantastic cast. It works best as a heist movie, and some of the technology is pretty funny - you just have to remember that it was all crazy James Bond-level tech at the time. But seriously - Redford, Kingsley, River Phoenix, Ackroyd, Poitier?!? Plus bonus appearances by Timothy Busfield, Mary McDonnell, Steven Tobolowsky and James Earl Jones?
