Aha, I think I just figured out how that smilie got there!
And if you don’t want the smiley to be there, you can click the little checkbox that says “Disable Smilies”. If you never want to use smileys, I think there’s an option in your control panel (the button at the top of the page labelled “User CP”) to make that box checked by default. And welcome!
