I don’t follow much basketball. I make my picks with criteria such as “I know someone who lives in this state and I like them, so I’ll pick this team” or “Their uniforms are butt-ugly. No way” (Hawaii will never get past a first bracket in a Cranky pick). Or, “They beat us in football, the jerks. I refuse to advance them.”
One of my coworkers who DOES follow basketball always submits two picks. One is done by knowledge and instincts. The other is done by some other theme, such as which mascot is tougher. So a Wolverine will always be picked over a spider, a wildcat over a banana slug, etc. Well, often her wacky theme does as well if not better than her knowledge and instinct pick.
Feh. I had USC going to the Final Four. Of course, since I actually went there (yes, pity me), I would have gotten endless shit had I picked them losing in the second round (or, at the very least, to Duke) and they actually did go to the Final Four.
Besides that, if they did advance to the Elite Eight or better, I think I would have pretty much won our rather small pool automatically.
Gah! It all fell apart this fateful Sunday. So many vital upsets in my bracket. Cinci probably being the worst seeing as how I had them going to the Final Four. The whole bottom of my Yahoo bracket is tinged in red.
However, I also had Florida and Gonzaga moving on as well as Marquette over Kentucky, so I’m glad I didn’t get my bracket turned in to the pool in time.
For a brief time on Saturday afternoon, I and my extended family (gathered for my grandmother’s birthday party) were the biggest Notre Dame fans south of the Ohio River. Oh well.
But as they say, who cares. If we can find a dime bag of whatever Tayshaun Prince was smoking before Saturday’s game, and if we can keep the “suck” knob turned down on Keith Bogans, then we might just have a shot in hell against Maryland. If so, the party’s at my house–whether I like it or not! (I live on the famed Celebration Corner.)
I’m still doing ok. I was 23-9 in the first round, including picking two of the #12 upsets (Missouri and Creighton). For the second round, I’m 11-5. Kent State and UCLA are killing me – I picked both to go out in the first round. I’m pretty confident with my Sweet 16 picks. The only one that I’m really unsure about is Oklahoma over Arizona.
For all you Kentucky rooters: your happiness is about to end.
I entered a pool, and had a bad blowout when i picked purdue to go all the way. This year i made my picks, and that sucked so hard, i picked Valparaiso University to get to Sweet 16, and they did not quite make it. There is always next year!
