The Amazing Race 3/18 - "You Need To Watch Your Jokes, Guy"

Cite?
I like Uchenna and Joyce a lot, and I think for African-Americans to visit the continent of their ancestry must be an amazing experience, but I agree that it was somewhat amusing. Especially since Joyce had to ask if Mozambique was in Africa.

Although I had an anti-geography moment also. For about two minutes after when they said “Mozambique” my brain was thinking “Madagascar” and I was bummed when I realized my mistake because I thought I’d get to hear Schmirna butchering French.

Is it just me, or is Joyce resembling Judy Garland in her later years? There’s something about the haircut and the neck…

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned yet that this is the second week in a row that the BQs have had a major screw-up without suffering any consequences.

Could be, but your link doesn’t help me see it.

I think Joyce has an Eartha Kitt quality since she cut her hair.

YES! Although, Joyce doesn’t look like she’ll tear your throat out with your teeth.

That’s the closest I could find. I have some pictures in a couple of biographies that show Judy’s crepey neck and it’s startling.

I can see a little Eartha as well, and a little Miss Ross, but the neck is pure Judy.

I too rolled with laughter at Oswald.

“I’m gonna hug you!”

“No way!”

And then the amazing editors chime in with some cartoonish music. Great stuff.

In Canada they re-broadcast the episode on Mondays on a network called the Outdoor Life Network. I just finished watching the last fifteen minutes again** just ** so I could watch the Chas chasing Phil. It was **every bit ** as funny the second time around.

I also noted in the discussion between Teri and Ian and the Guidos last night about underwear that Teri/Ian are continuing in the paper underwear wearing ways. That gave me a chuckle as well.

I have to admit, I’m completely astounded by the relative difficulty of the Detour choices. The more physical task is always faster…only this time, it wasn’t. Not by a long shot. Paint fingernails of two people? How hard is that? Look for starting times next week; that should be interesting.

Taxi Assessment

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
John Vito & Jill and Kevin & Drew and David & Mary and Rob & Amber - Already gone.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
Charla & Mirna - (holding steady) - A first place; seems like this team should be ranked better than this, no? No. Every other team made mistakes, either by getting lost or by taking the wrong Detrour option. Granted, not making mistakes is part of the game, and that’s what Charla & Mirna did, but they’re still the weakest team out there, and a string of awesome luck isn’t going to change that.
Uchenna & Joyce - (down from “Rapido!”) - Ouch. Lucky, lucky, lucky they are. Since their fate is hanging on a string, they get moved down to the bottom rung. The design of the next leg will seal their fate. Will there be a Fast Forward? Will there be enough spread in finish times that they can wait out a half-hour penalty? We’ll see. If they survive, I’ll move them back up. If not…well, they get permanently moved down.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Teri & Ian - (holding steady) - And speaking of mistakes…since when does getting lost and showing up at the wrong Detour option help you out immensely? It sure did in this episode. They owe their cabby big time, because if he’d taken them to the right place, they’d be in last place instead of top three.

"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Dustin & Kandice - (holding steady) - What is with this team? They keep making dumb mistakes, but keep bouncing back from them. Forget you beacon? Ah well, doesn’t matter. Get lost? At least they had the sense to strike out on their own. I still think this team has a good chance, but if they quit doing dumb things they’d finish first on every leg.
Joe & Bill - (holding steady) - A solid leg to start, marred by a wrong Detour choice and getting lost right before the Pit Stop.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
as a disaster just waiting to happen, but if they can keep focused they could easily win it all.
Eric & Danielle - (holding steady) - Getting lost on the way back into town was not so good, and their Detour choice was poor, but it was a smart move getting the kids to take them to the right house for coal delivery. That put them solidly ahead of Uchenna & Joyce, which is all they really needed.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
Danny & Oswald - (holding steady) - A little temper tantrum this week, but it happened at the beginning of the leg where it did no harm. They were the first of the charcoal Detour teams to finish, which means they still deserve to be front-runners.

Next week: Uchenna has trouble with the Fast Forward, is my guess. But nothing comes of it.
[sub]Props to Mullinator and his Raj Ratings.[/sub]

A variant on the classic “Reichen and Chip Meet The Orangutan” maneuver. The boys drove around looking for IIRC one of the Detour options, realized they were going the wrong way but ended up on the road to claim the Fast Forward and win the leg.

It wasn’t painting the nails of two people, it was paint nails till they earned 30 … somethings … whatever the money is there. I think they were charging whatever they could get.

And the only time when we saw a certain price quote was when Teri & Ian (IIRC) tried to shake down someone for 30 whatevers – which we viewers were told was equivalent to US$1 – and the woman offered 20. Then fortunately for Teri & Ian, her friend was willing to pay 10 for the same treatment.

I can’t determine if 30 in local money was a lot or a little for a nail polish job. Then again, I’d be doing well just to know which part was the brush.

O&D’s chasing Phil Benny Hill moment has got to be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on this show. I agree he likes them. Anyone else would’ve gotten stopped with an icy stare.

Phil petting the rat was cute too. I guess the producers know we live for our little Phil moments.

Eric’s comment about the old queens was rude, but the Guidos act like they probably say it about themselves all the time and Eric is just dense enough to not figure out that doesn’t mean he can say it.

Charla & Mirna’s choice of doing the nail painting was smart. They’re pretty pushy and assertive and have no problem demanding lots of attention in crowds. Their first sale was to the guy they shanghaied to bring them to the market anyway.

It was smart for the BQ’s pretty much for the same reason. Teri & Ian OTOH, got really lucky, since they ended up there by mistake.

Personally, I’d have gone for the coal challenge too. For all I know, nail painting is a really strange thing to talk strangers into, and cajoling people into it wouldn’t fit my style. I’m certain the clue didn’t say men traditionally do it. Team Guido said “two guys painting nails would be weird,” and O&D said “people don’t wanna paint nails for a lot of money here.” That’s what I’d be thinking, and imagine myself spending all day with people thinking I’m a weirdo. Plus, what the heck is 30 Meticals? Did they tell the racers it’s only $1US? I’d be afraid people would only pay 1 Metical per polish.

I forget: is Metical the liquor with the worm at the bottom?

I checked with a few web sites. The Mozambique Metical (new), the MZN, was a 1000:1 devaluation of the Mozambique Metical, the MZM. The MZN presently trades at 26 to the USD.

Which still doesn’t tell us what the MZN is worth, or a fair-market price in MZN for a nail polish job.

No, silly. A Metical is what you go to the docdor’s office for.

Stupid CBS is really starting to tick me off with their schedules. I got about 5 minutes of the show recorded because of the delay. I really wish they’d rebroadcast…or make it available online like they do Survivor.
