The Amazing Race 4/29: "Oh My God The Teletubbies Go To War"

None intended, but I apoligize anyway.

To the previous post, didn’t the care package take longer than all the washing?

Am I a bad person for laughing out loud when Oswald spoke the line for which this episode is named?

“Oh my God, the Teletubbies go to war.”

No, no you’re not.

D&O fan checking in - Danny and Oswald were my favorites after the BQs, mainly because they were:

  • Damn good racers
  • Mostly drama free
  • Funny as hell (especially Oswald)

I’ve laughed more at Oswald comments than I have at everyone else put together this season. Hence, I like 'em.

And FTR - are they a couple? I thought they were just friends.

Edit: One negative though - the use of the finger quotes for “no reason.” Unless he meant something other than “open” when he finger quoted “open.”

All the kissing on the lips wasn’t a clue?

No, I was resigned by then. They blew it when they relied on Danny’s magical navigating skills. I love him, but for the past few episodes, he’s not been able to find anything at all, and has this bizarre refusal to use a map, because “he knows where it is.”

Funniest moment “you have to pick the right accent”

I don’t care who wins - I just really don’t want Eric and Danielle to get a million dollars.

I thought they were just kissy. The show lists them as best friends, and everything they said about each other to me just conveyed a very deep friendship rather than a romantic relationship. If they are a couple why didn’t the show list them as such? Don’t ask don’t tell for the military tasks? :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope, not a clue.

I’m rooting for Eric now. Oh, and whoever that person with him is.

Beauty Queens: Die!

Charla & Mirna: Die! With an accent!

The final elimination episode. I hate it when they show interview clips (clearly filmed post-leg) from all but the team marked for elimination. Takes the drama out of it.

Taxi Assessment

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
John Vito & Jill and Kevin & Drew and David & Mary and Rob & Amber and Teri & Ian and Joe & Bill and Uchenna & Joyce- We’ll see these folks once more next week.
Danny & Oswald - (down from “Flat Tire”) - I hate to say it, but Danny & Oswald looked like they were lackadaisically drifting through this episode. Cool and collected is nice, but they were in a situation where they had to take risks, they had to hurry, and they couldn’t make mistakes. They had a legitimate chance, once the airport bunch left all the teams tied, but they didn’t seem like they wanted it; getting lost on the way to the base just cemented it. They didn’t even get beaten because of the 30-minute penalty, they just plain got beaten.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
No one.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
No one.

"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Charla & Mirna - (up from “Stopping”) - Charla & Mirna are in the final three, so I guess they deserve a bump up in the rankings. I was going to comment thay they picked the wrong Detour, but given that the plane-washing entailed working overhead, they may have done as well as they could. I don’t think this team has much of a chance of winning unless they finagle a better flight than the other two teams – they’re not as smart as Dustin & Kandice and not as strong as Eric & Danielle. But one small mistake by each of the other teams…

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
Eric & Danielle - (holding steady) - Danielle’s worthlessness notwithstanding, this team clearly has an edge on Charla & Mirna (Eric + 0 > Mirna + 1/2, if you’ll forgive the mathematical snarkiness), but is also a half-step behind Dustin & Kandice. However, Eric & Danielle had a quite impressive leg last week, with lots of intensity and few errors. That’s the kind of leg they need to run next week.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
Dustin & Kandice - (holding steady) - Dustin & Kandice have won three of the last four legs and clearly look like the favorite going into the final leg. They might be benefitting from some editing, but it sure looked to me like Dustin had by far the easiest time working the GPS during the Roadblock. Now remember, Dustin & Kandice have looked impressive recently, but they’re not impervious to error: they’ve done some really dumb things on occasion in the past.

Next week: Last episode, and $1,000,000 is up for grabs.

Hum. That show sounds like it could either be really cool,
or it could really suck. Will someone promise to open a thread about the first ep well ahead of time? Otherwise I’ll never remember.

Oh, I dunno about that. Otto’s already commented on this, but I’ll point out that no teams are perfect. All teams make mistakes; they’re eliminated because of the size, amount, and timing of their mistakes. Danny & Oswald ran a relatively mistake-free race, but made two or three small mistakes right in a row that doomed them.

I must say I hate to see Danny and Oswald go, but Charla and Mirna have kind of won me over with their persistence, and they deserve to be in the final three more. D&O were calm and cool, enjoying every moment, and very entertaining with their comments, but they just made too many navigational mistakes. Let’s face it, they didn’t race as well as Charla and Mirna the last two legs.

Charla and Mirna are pretty danged annoying, but they are racing hard and making good decisions, for the most part. And they’re also enjoying themselves.

Having said that, I don’t think they have a chance to win against the BQs and Eric and nobody. The BQs have been racing smart the entire race, and I think they’re the team to beat. Especially since Eric mentioned that he has used up all of his roadblocks, so what’s her name is going to have to do the last one. That could be the death knell for that team.

As for quotes, I loved the teletubby comment and the accents comment, but another one was the exchange between Mirna and the Hong Kong cab driver:
Mirna: “How do you say ‘airport’?”
Cabbie: “Airport.”
Mirna: “Ooooh, ‘airport’ [with accent].”

I have nothing to say this week that hasn’t already been said by somebody else, except this: I have been told that one of the Navy search-and-rescue guys who was featured in this episode is my cousin. I watched, and I think I saw about two blinks of him, but I’m not sure. I’m trying to pin down confirmation from somebody who know, but so far, nada. Further bulletins as events warrant.

Oh, and I did, in fact, wear black today. With sparkles. And really cute shoes. And I’m having a better-than-average hair day. All of which I hope the Chas would appreciate.

They’ve described themselves on at least one occasion as “platonic husbands.” So I assume that they love each other very much but that there’s either no sexual attraction or they realize that sex would completely screw things up.

There’s no one left to root for, for me. Danny and Oswald were my new favorites. At this point, I’m just hoping that Dustin and Kandice do NOT win. They’re the greatest of all remaining evils as far as I’m concerned. If they do win, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they try to steal the spotlight from Rob and Amber at the finish line. They’re such attention whores.

My dream scenario is that the Schmirnas win it all. In a series of unlucky, but not tragic events Mirna loses everything. She then decides to forego all material wealth and enters a convent, taking a vow of silence so we never hear those “accents” again.

What is your obsession with Rob and Amber? I don’t get it. And shouldn’t the spotlight at the finish line go to whichever team wins the race, and not a team which was Philiminated halfway through the race?

That’s what I was thinking. How can D&K steal the spotlight from anyone if they win? Is that like Tom Hanks stealing the spotlight from me on Oscar night?

Liberal’s dry sense of humor is sometimes mistaken for sincerity.

Sorry, but this is not the first thread in which Liberal has made comments about Rob and Amber which make me believe that he has them set on a pedestal.

I suppose it’s possible that that’s just more evidence that I don’t get him or his sense of humor.

One thing I noticed about the Beauty Queens is that they always at least appear to give their full attention to the native greeters at the Pit Stops: They keep their eyes on the speaker the whole time, smile, nod, say thank you directly to them – iow, they’re polite.

A lot of the time the other teams would barely glance at the greeters, maybe mutter thank you, but obviously already have their attention riveted on Phil. Yes, I understand that they’re in a race, but at that point the leg is OVER and their position, whatever it is, is fixed. Not being able to spare 10 seconds to be courteous to the greeter is really bad manners.
