The Amazing Race 8/31

Sounds like Miss Alli from TWOP, don’t it? Whoever it is … if you’re ever in Pottstown, let me buy you a beer, OK?

No kidding. Can we please stop talking about Creepy Colin’s Dinky Dick?

Actually, I thought the stupidest ones were the Twins. They get to the Road Block, and see every other team already there, and working on the bricks. They should have just turned around and headed for the fast forward immediatly.

And don’t the teams that make it to the final four all get at least some money? I thought the winning team got the million and the other three each got…50 grand or so. Now if that’s true, then they would have at least won that amount as far as they knew. (5 teams left, last one gets eliminated, only 4 left), now this was a non-elimination round, but they didn’t know that. I’m sorry…while he may be a model, she’s not that attractive, so she’s not doing like $5000 a gig sessions or anything.
Eh…shrug…I would have done it…it would only have taken a few months for his hair to grow back…they could have traded in on this for that long…even without being “hair” models…I’m sure some product company would have given them a gig.

And I agreed with the mom’s a bit on this one. From what they showed, it looked to me like the taxi driver said he was heading to the airport, and they could follow him. I didn’t hear anything about him turning on the meter. That was a bit underhanded in my opinion.

Um…

Y’know how we’re all horrified with Colon’s abusive behavior, anger management issues and psychotic episodes?

He’s nothing compared to another competitor:

A pal dug up a videotape of like 4 “Season 1” episodes.

(NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!!)

and there’s some lunatic named “Frank” who berates his girlfriend/ex-wife, belittles her, orders her around (“Who’s da boss? Saaaay it woman? Who. Is. Da. BOSS? Who IS! IN! CHARGE”) but, if that were’t bad enough, ** he’s hit her!**…twice in one episode! It’s pushy-shovey hitting but it’s still hitting. Colon may be an ass, but to what little credit he has, he’s never hit Christie.

(And one guy, who looks like Gilligan from Giligan’s Island got so frustrated that he shoved a cameraman! I didn’t think you were allowed to touch a cameraman!)

You mean Frank of Frank and Margarita? My memory is hazy, but I don’t recall him being so bad. The team mostly worked well together, and Margarita gave as good as she got. The truly abusive personality on Season One was Karyn. I can still hear her voice yelling “Lenny!”.

I’ve only seen two episodes of four that he got (One is the finale), but in the two that I’ve seen, Lenny is dumb as a rock. He deserved to be yelled at. (In the one case I’ve seen, he went up the steps of the Eiffel Tower, looked around, didn’t find the monument, went back down, she told him to go back up, 'cause they wouldn’t be able to continue without him finding the answer, he goes back up, guesses Notre Dame, goes back down. They rush over to Notre Dame whereupon he admits that he just guessed.

She blows up, they go back up, someone from another team tells him where to go and they go.

This fella’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

But Frank actually hits Margarita. Open handed, he takes the palm of his hand and shoves her shoulder, hard, in the Junior High-school “I choose ya!./You wanna make somethin’ of it?” fashion. Then later, he cups her chin in his hand and says (something very close to) “You done good, little girl. See how easy it is when you do what I say?”

Eew. I hope someone kicks him in the head. Repeatedly.

Plus there’s some character who’s name I don’t remember who combines the worst qualities of Flo with the worst qualities of…well, just about anyone else. He’s dumb, whiney and passive-agressive ("This is so hard on you. We should just quit.’)

Why won’t CBS put th’ damned things out on DVD?

Fenris

Yah, I remember the Eiffel Tower incident. I’ll grant you that Lenny wasn’t the brightest star in the sky, but the verbal abuse from Karyn was just unrelenting.

Yet, or that we know of. Just sayin’. I don’t need any more reasons to hate him, mind you, but I have seen abusive realtionships in action, and the way he talks to her is only the beginning.

Frank (Based on the two episodes I’ve seen) is about 12 steps beyond where Colon is. At another point, he’s screaming in her face ala a marine drill instructor. This guy’s (from what I’ve seen) scary. He makes Colon look like a pouty child having temper tantrums.

I’m going through and watching the first season right now. While Frank starts off as a bit of an overbearing jerk, he definitely gets better - at least, the footage that’s shown makes it look that way. I’m on about episode 10 right now, and he and Marguerite (sp?) seem to be genuinely getting along well and enjoying each other’s company. They’ve shown several interviews with the two of them where they talk about how much their relationship has improved thanks to the game.

Why can’t I remember Frank and Marguerite?? You’d think that would stick in my mind.
I do remember Lenny and Karyn, though. I used to feel so awful for him, because she actually made him cry a few times. You know, just because someone is stupid, doesn’t mean they deserve to be yelled at. It could be that he was so used to her constant abuse that he was unable to think clearly and was under too much pressure. Have you ever had a really abusive boss where you just blurt out any old answer when they’re right in your face, just to get the incident over with? That’s what I mean.

I really don’t get all this anti-Colin talk. What’s the big deal? Yeah, he’s stupid, mildly psychotic, and has the maturity of a two-year-old autistic child. But it’s a pretty long stretch to suggest he might be beating up Christie when the cameras aren’t rolling. Some of you guys seem like you’re equating Christie with Farrah Fawcett in “The Burning Bed”, fer chrissakes.

But anyway, while we’re on the subject…

How about Ian from the Teri & Ian team in Season 3? Y’know, the ex-vet who would slap his leg and shout, “Teri, COME!” as if he were barking orders at his dog. Now that was a dysfunctional (yet strangely balanced) relationship!

Um, yeah, I don’t remember Frank and Marguerite as being more than just excessively bickersome, and only at first. IIRC they were a separated couple who used the race as something to do together to see if they could make it work, they finished a close second, and their last interview said they’d reconciled because of their shared experiences. Whatever any of them said, it was over in a second. Colin, by comparison, was at the police station yelling about his damn fifty bucks (that weren’t even his) for hours on end, all the way through the sunrise, and has *never * said anything nice to Christie on-camera. He’s gonna implode sooner or later, even if it isn’t in this show - and getting eliminated just might trigger it. Let’s hope there’s some security guys right there when Phil says “I’m sorry …”

Ian turned out to be just highly competitive, in a boys’ locker room kind of way, but genuinely loving and respecting of Teri, and with her returning it in full.

OK, now I know who and what we’re talking about.
I agree with your observations about them, and definitely about Colin.
Ian was an annoyance and, in my opinion, a misogynist, but at the end of it all, he was just those and not anything more.
KGS , I suspect one of the reasons for the anti-Colin talk, as opposed to talking about competitors from other seasons, is that he’s the one we are watching now, whereas they kind of fade from memory when they’re not in front of us every week. I have to disagree with you about one thing, though—I work with some autistic clients, and they aren’t as volatile as he is.

DAMMIT! :stuck_out_tongue:

Not your fault - no one should be worrying about four year old spoilers.

I’m sorry, I hadn’t realized you weren’t done yet. I’ll shut up now.

Except for these two teasers: Wil & Tara. Zach & Flo.
When you see them, you’ll know.

I finished season one last night, finally.

A few things:

I think Linda & Karen and the Twins both ended up climbing in their cabs before realizing they didn’t have engines – but by that point the folks in the neighborhood, who clearly knew the drill, were already enthusiastically pushing the cabs. So they just enjoyed the ride!

Brandon, if not Nicole, had a good reason not to cut his hair. His curly locks are currently, apparently, decorating signs on bus stops all over NYC for Point Zero, I think it is. And as curly as his hair is, it would probably have taken him at least six months to grow it back to anything like its current length, by which time all his modeling contracts would have gone kaput. So I give him, at least, a pass on not cutting his. Nicole? A bald beauty queen? I would have paid good money to see that – along with her screaming hysterical fit when she saw herself!

And as for updates on prior season racers:

Frank and Margarita from season one? Not only did Frank improve dramatically, but they’re still together and just had another baby a couple of months ago. (I saw a photo of her at a TAR5 premier party, and she looked gorgeous, even though she was big as a house – not fair!) So apparently they’re together and doing fine.

Teri and Ian from season three? He just ran for county commissioner in his county in Florida, and lost in the (of course) Republican primary. Although he got like 24% of the vote while only spending 3% of the money the winner did.

Of the dysfunctional or abusive relationships shown on TAR - Teri & Ian, Flo & Zach, Tara & Wil, arguably Frank & Margarita - Colin’s apparent abuse of Christie particularly stands out. I think it’s because only Colin makes Christie apologize for it.

Teri just let Ian run his mouth. When Ian did something particularly stupid, like putting gasoline in the diesel engine after Teri had specifically asked about getting the right type of fuel, he immediately admitted that he screwed up. Similarly, Zach allowed Flo to whine and bitch and complain, yet still managed to get them first across the finsh line. Can’t say much about Tara and Wil. There was no love lost between them; they abused each other. As for Frank, I got the impression that Margarita only tolerated a certain amount of nonsense from him. If he had acted as Colin did at the police station, I think Margarita would have let him rot in jail. She certainly wouldn’t have apologized as Christie did and Frank surely would not have demanded one.

Actually, that’s exactly what happened. In one of the remaining episodes that I have, Frank calls Margarita a “moron”. She hits the roof and he backs down and apologizes. Not a very sincere apology, IMO, but at least she’s shown him that she’s not a doormat. Kudos to her.

< grumble > …and when Frank finally figures out that (in the first season, at least) it doesn’t matter if you’re first or second by a few seconds (they weren’t giving out prizes for being a first place winner as far as I’ve seen), he actually becomes kinda fun. If you ignore the fact that he hit his ex-wife in an episode.*

Fenris

*I repeat, not a hard hit at all. Wouldn’t have left a mark or even reddened the skin. But if I did that to any girlfriend I had, I’d be in a world of hurt.
